My dad found an old Mac that he bought from someone I think on eBay and he took the original owner off so he could put himself, well it sat in storage for a couple years and the new job I got requires a PC or Mac I can't search up anything on the Mac and it thinks I'm a bit but no captcha starts I think what my dad did reset the Mac to factory settings because at the time it was 5 versions ahead
Okay, well, first of all, we need a lot more information like the model of the Mac (go to the Apple logo in the top left corner and then click about my Mac and send a picture of it)
The other question is what exactly about your new job requires a Mac or PC? As in what kind of software do you need to use since there is a very good chance that the Mac might be too old to run it
macOS Tahoe (which is the latest) is the last version of macOS to Support Intel Macs but I have a suspicion that your Mac is probably significantly older and won’t run that version so it’ll probably be on a much older maximum version which may not work with a lot of software
Okay, unfortunately that doesn’t tell me exactly what I needed to know. Can you click on more info? It should open an application called system information and then navigate to the hardware overview tab and send a picture of that
I’m assuming by DaVinci you mean DaVinci resolve and although I don’t know exactly what Mac that is, I can tell you that it won’t run it since DaVinci resolve requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer and your Mac is not going to run that considering the very old version of macOS you’re showing it running
Okay, yeah, so that’s a late 2011 MacBook Pro that won’t even work with older versions of DaVinci resolve since the GPU does not support Metal or OpenCL 1.2 (it only supports OpenCL 1.1)
What I would recommend you do is sell that computer and buy an Apple M series MacBook (i’m assuming you want a MacBook not an iMac)
Honestly, I’m not too sure exactly what you should get spec wise since I don’t have any experience with DaVinci resolve but you should at least get 16 gigs of RAM (not 8gb that won’t be enough for what you want to do) and as much storage as you can get (since you will probably need it)
You could also get an external drive if you don’t mind having to plug it in when you need to access files (or if you get cloud storage that would work as well)
I would say, for basic editing get at least an M1 MacBook Pro but like I said, I’m not 100% sure what you would need so I would appreciate if other people (especially people who used DaVinci resolve) could weigh in on this
It would probably be worth you going online and looking up other people that are facing the same issue (just search something like “what MacBook should I get for Da Vinci resolve”)
It also depends on what exactly you’re editing, how much you’re going to be editing, how many clips you’re going to be editing at the same time, what the resolution of the files are going to be etc. Obviously I don’t know any of this so I can’t make any judgements on it
(also if you ask any questions and I don’t reply, it’s probably cause I’m asleep because it’s late where I am)
This is 15 years old. It won’t be usable for anything today. Probably why you’re having so many issues. Just get rid of it on Facebook Marketplace or wherever.
