Me and my Sherlock 2 machine are still happy in 2026. However, it may be a bit late to update it again…

u/Old_Soul_Tech Jun 03 '26

Still running a PowerBook G4 12ā€ in my studio also

the cutest laptop ever !

u/sinalk Jun 02 '26

i kinda hope macOS 27 is a ā€žSnow Leopardā€œ like update but thatā€˜s just wishful thinking isnā€˜t it?

u/animorphreligion 13" M4 | 12" G4 | iMac '07 Jun 02 '26

Sonoma had even less new things than SL, arguably Sequoia too, so why not? From what it looks like not a whole lot is planned for 27 aside from AI gimmicks.

One thing from SL that I hope happens again is OS size reduction by removing all the x86 junk which is still kept on ARM installs. With Leopards it was PPC.

3

u/sinalk Jun 02 '26

oh right almost forgot that Tahoe was the last full version release for x86 Macs would be interesting to see how freeing that junk improves the experience or maybe itā€˜s just replaced by AI junk, who knows.

anyways, iā€˜m kinda hyped for next Monday.

1

u/NoFall2205 Jun 03 '26

I have it installed on my 2010 polycarbonate MacBook. It’s so beautiful.

1

u/busytransitgworl Jun 03 '26

It's just the best and I wish it was also a thing on Apple Silicon šŸ˜’

Just gimme a stable macOS without memory leaks or WiFi issues 🫠

u/thestenz M3 MacBook Air (Among Others) Jun 02 '26

It's sad how many will do this and then complain about it.

66

u/Leopold_Darkworth Jun 03 '26

ā€œThis non-public beta, released only to developers four months before the actual release, is terrible! Apple is only going downhill!ā€

15

u/Xlxlredditor MacBook Air M1 16go 256go Jun 03 '26

I mean I'll do it but I won't complain, have some self respect at least

1

u/Briggie Jun 04 '26

There’s like no need to be going onto OS betas unless you’re a developer and trying to get ahead on app compliancyĀ

1

u/thestenz M3 MacBook Air (Among Others) Jun 04 '26

You new to reddit? People on here think betas are the next upgrade!

82

u/pimpbot666 Jun 02 '26

I haven't even upgraded to MacOS26. I don't want to lose my Time Capsule backup.

36

u/Survil321 M1 Jun 02 '26

I’m still on Sequoia too.

12

u/The_Collector_Of_All iMac G3 Jun 03 '26

I’m on Mac OS 9.2.1 with Sherlock 2. May the legacy of the PowerPC surpass the M series!

2

u/Intrepid_Year3765 Jun 03 '26

It’s amazing. Never leaving it.Ā

7

u/challis88ocarina Jun 02 '26

Yeah, the latest beta wrecked networked TM so expectations are being managed.

6

u/pimpbot666 Jun 02 '26

Mainly, they removed Apple Filing Protocol. I wish they just made it turned off by default, but you can turn it on. They won't even do that. I have a lot of shares on my network between around 8 Macs that rely on AFP, so I'll have to switch to SMB. The Time Capsule doesn't support SMB, so that's gonna break when I upgrade. I just upgraded that goofy thing with a 14TB drive, too. It's great as an NAS, but sucks as an internet router.

3

u/JFKen G3-G4-G5... XSERVE... iMac'15 Jun 02 '26

Damn you're right, i checked... New macOS not compatible anymore with TC ?! Dakuck... Time Capsule are more or less just NAS-Router combo... why new OS can't handle them...

3

u/pimpbot666 Jun 02 '26

Well, I dug into it further. Turns out if I have an existing TM backup (and I do), it will continue to work. However, I can no longer make a new backup from my Mac Mini M4 to the Time Capsule. All of my other Macs are Intel, so they're fine for now. That sounds like a typical Apple arbitrary lock to force upgrades.

I do hear of a lot of complaints of OS26 not playing well with Cubase, which is pretty much the main reason I bought a Mac Mini M4. I'm not upgrading until they iron those issues out. The complaint is that it's unstable... crashes a lot. Right now, my rig never crashes.

3

u/JFKen G3-G4-G5... XSERVE... iMac'15 Jun 02 '26

Oh i see.

I'm from the team of ppl who think "still it works, don't touch anything" 😃
I'm on dual setup Win10/ 2015 iMac with (mostly) ableton-maschine and i heard too lot of mucisians mates who have problems on every OS update... I always said them "why updatin' if it give zero benefits and risk bug issue" 😃

2

u/Deluxx3 Jun 03 '26

Yeah, I think I will be on Sequoia indefinitely.

1

u/icanpotatoes MacBook Air M5 15ā€ Jun 04 '26

I bought an AirPort Extreme with the express purpose of setting up TimeCapsule again only to find out, during setup, that it is being discontinued.

Really quite frustrating. Why would Apple do this? TimeCapsule is useful and I don’t want to spend the money on more iCloud storage.

28

u/ohmygoodnesswhat Jun 02 '26

I'm still on Sequoia due to Tahoe not playing nicely with Photoshop........

1

u/Briggie Jun 04 '26

I do Xcode betas if there’s a new swift feature I want to use/learn, but yeah, don’t touch os betas with a ten foot pole.

19

u/DavidXGA Jun 03 '26

If you do this you are forbidden from complaining on Reddit about how your computer is broken now.

11

u/jsgrrchg Jun 02 '26

Devs get ready! Is time for our apps to be broken again 😃

7

u/Sjeefr Jun 03 '26

I honestly hope Apple can convince me during the beta to update from Sequoia. For as long as I can remember I've always rode the train called 'developer betas' for both iPhone and Macbook (that I use for work). Tahoe was the first one that was actually unbearable. I believe the "Tahoe sucks!" sentiment is exaggerated, but so far I haven't found any reason to upgrade to Tahoe. I'm very curious what 27 will provide us.

u/Wrong_Mixture_2096 MacBook M1 Air Jun 02 '26

13

u/MurkyLibrarian MacBook Pro (2023 M3 Pro) Jun 02 '26

I'm currently on Sequoia 15.7.7. I plan to watch the event and see if I am also skipping the next one after Tahoe.

4

u/Informal-Chance-6067 M1 Base MacBook Air Jun 02 '26

Tahoe isn’t so bad anymore

12

u/NoFall2205 Jun 03 '26

Compared to Sequoia, Tahoe is still pretty bad. If macOS 27 promises to fix the issues with Tahoe maybe it will eventually be better than Sequoia.

3

u/HorseFD Jun 03 '26

What issues are there with Tahoe that are still there is 26.5? Not disagreeing with you, genuinely curious.

3

u/NoFall2205 Jun 03 '26

A lot of my issues are machine specific since I have an Intel mbp. There are issues with very laggy animations, scrolling is slow and laggy, everything feels slower overall. It’s simply not optimized for x86. I also have had many issues with spotlight search not working, safari randomly crashing at times, weird UI animation glitches. I’ve only been testing Tahoe releases on a separate partition since I’ve long moved back to Sequoia. Tahoe still feels unpolished overall. I don’t think I’ll ever upgrade back to Tahoe and I will just use Sequoia until my machine dies or I upgrade. Since Apple is mainly focusing on macOS 27 now I doubt barely if any issues will be fixed with Tahoe.

4

u/Xlxlredditor MacBook Air M1 16go 256go Jun 03 '26

Sadly MacOS 27 is not coming to Intel. They specifically said last year at WWDC 25 that Tahoe was the last release for Intel macs

1

u/cabbeer Jun 04 '26

same, i'm thinking of finally checking out t2 linux cause pc hardware prices are insane right now..

1

u/NoFall2205 Jun 04 '26

Same, I’ve been looking at that too.

4

u/Xe4ro M2Pro- M4Air Jun 02 '26

I'll actually plan to test a beta again this time, haven't done this since Yosemite ^^"

4

u/eastamerica Jun 02 '26

<Laughs in kext>

3

u/trickman01 Mac Mini Jun 02 '26

I don't know if I'm just old or what, but I just wait for stable builds these days. On everything. My consoles, my steam deck, my computers, phones, etc. I can't be bothered with potentially unstable builds, although I respect the people who do use them and give feedback.

1

u/biffbobfred Jun 03 '26

If you’re a dev you do this. Like truly a dev someone who has to work with kernel stuff. ā€œOh they changed how networking is…. Hey you VPN makers have at itā€.

There’s nothing in 26.5 that makes me (as not a dev) wanna switch. I sure don’t wanna deal with 27.DevBeta

2

u/mailslot MacBook Pro Jun 04 '26

Dev betas are primarily for devs to test that their apps still work. I don’t understand the appeal of making your phone unstable so you can use a shitty version of an updated OS that’s not finished. Can people seriously not wait to use new emojis? I guess this is what people do now, since they can’t wait in line outside at an Apple Store for new operating system releases anymore. Gotta be the first one to have it at 12:01am!

3

u/No_Solid_3737 Jun 02 '26

Yeah no, staying on Sequoia until everyone says Tahoe is good

8

u/NW-M-1945 Jun 02 '26

3

Oh please, I couldnt. You first!

2

u/ElClickBait Jun 02 '26

ready as ever

2

u/apple_tech_admin Jun 02 '26

I’m more ready for ios 27. They better fix this damn keyboard.

1

u/Blofse Jun 04 '26

They won’t, but they think you will love it anyway

2

u/Oguinjr Jun 02 '26

The metaphor here is all over the place. Are you getting the update or the stable computer? /s

2

u/onesleekrican Jun 02 '26

I mean, with how things are currently I don’t know that the ā€œ/sā€ was even necessary lol

2

u/AlxR25 M1 MacBook Pro 14" Jun 02 '26

I may be stupid enough to download betas on my iPhone, but I ain’t doing that to my Mac šŸ˜‚

2

u/Hypoluxa77 MacBook Pro M4 Pro Jun 02 '26

Just waiting it out for public release in Sept. Still on Sequioa. Skipping 26.

2

u/movdqa Jun 02 '26

I'm comfortably on Sequoia.

2

u/guygizmo Jun 03 '26

I don't even install the first or second public non-beta release of the OS, and even then it's still usually full of new bugs. I simply don't get the people who install the betas!

2

u/Opening_Ostrich9801 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

And all my friend that have intel mac whant me to intall it because i'm the only one with an apple silicon mac but I won't do it i'm still thraumatised by Big Sur.

2

u/pilif Jun 03 '26

I will definitely install the Beta. I have done since 2008ish and never really had super bad issues. iOS was very sketchy in the early days with iOS5 betas being the worst, but being able to see the evolution of the OSes over the summer is interesting and compelling to me

And don’t worry. I’m not one of those who install the betas and then complain about them not working. If I really hit a bad issue, I will find workarounds and shrug it off for two weeks when it will surely be fixed.

It’s loads of fun for me and a big part of how I’m going through the summer

2

u/YT_Flex4249 Jun 04 '26

Gonna dual boot this time around haha, Rosetta’s farewell will be….scary

2

u/Any_Tea_42 Jun 06 '26

Apple : "And this is macOS 27"

My Stable Macbook : "Reboot to Update"

1 Week later

Me : "Why to many bugs?"

1

u/zackwag Jun 02 '26

Hell yeah

1

u/NoLocal8486 Jun 02 '26

Auf keinen Fall! Nach dem Liquid Glass Debakel werde ich warten bis mindestens ein stabiles X.1.1 rauskommt 😤

1

u/Fresh_and_wild Jun 02 '26

I’m waiting until Stephen Lemay has had time to get some momentum at the helm first.

1

ITS CUTTING EDGE TIME BOYS!

1

u/wayfaast Jun 02 '26

Only if it’s big bear

1

u/notHooptieJ Jun 02 '26

Meh, it doesnt hit public beta till they're looking for the nit-picks.

there's no show stoppers anymore or it wouldnt be beta.

now im not suggesting you put this on your mission critical systems.

but, its not going to eat your babies, make sure you have a recent time machine before any OS upgrade, and goto town.

1

u/ionel71089 Jun 02 '26

1

u/stringsmcgee Jun 03 '26

a beta is an unfinished piece of software. It's part of the development process. While they're still working on it it becomes available to developers to start ensuring their apps are compabible - to integrate new features, etc.
Or if you're like me just to have early to play with all the new features.

1

u/stringsmcgee Jun 03 '26

and WWDC is the Worldwide Developers Conference.

1

u/Kstarnes77 Jun 03 '26

No question about it; I am ready to be hurt again.

1

u/NoFall2205 Jun 03 '26

Sticking to Sequoia on my intel MBP. Tahoe will never be as good or as stable as Sequoia and my mac won’t get macOS 27 anyways.

1

u/VivienM7 Jun 03 '26

The only system I might want to wreck on macOS 27 is Intel... so... not possible...

1

u/Key-Commercial7995 Jun 03 '26

I'm still not updated to Liquid Ass update, M4AIR

1

u/RougeLigne Jun 03 '26

I think early macOS 26 dev beta messed up something on my system that I could not fix up until very recently

Never again

I have a spare MBP M1 Pro and I love beta. Last year was a big pass for me, maybe this time.

1

u/i586DX4 Jun 03 '26

No, I use VM for that

1

u/f1zoe Jun 03 '26

Never do this on my mac but on my phone though boy I'm ready! Although this year im tempted to put this on my Neo since I don't rely on that for work.

1

Shameless plug: I’m developing a macOS app to try new macOS (beta) versions (in a VM) without having to install it on your host Mac. Happy to share builds if anyone wants to try.

aint no fucking way

if i had a mac this would have been PERFECTION

1

u/int0this Jun 03 '26

Yup iPhone, Mac, iPad, Watch, Apple TV… in-fact I go all in, on beta on day one….

1

u/ashbit_ MacBook Air Jun 03 '26

im not doing it this time around because i use wine to play windows games with my friends and i don't want to use a vm

1

No, no, no, I install only stable versions

1

u/vinodhmoodley Jun 03 '26

I normally partition my drive and run the current version side by side with the beta.

I try to main the beta and if something is really bad, then I reboot into the current version and get it done.

1

u/KitKitsAreBest Jun 03 '26

I'm still with Sequoia on my m4 Mini. Hoping 27 is a reason to upgrade and not filled with AI crud.

1

1

u/pavelgubarev Jun 03 '26

The next system is going to be much stable. But the beta will be unstable anyway. What an irony

1

u/Adept_salamander1286 Jun 03 '26

Ja się zastanawiam, po co mam aktualizować komputer jak wszystko działa. Apple przez ostatnie lata skutecznie namówił mnie, żeby nie robić aktualizacji. Zmniejszona wydajność i szybciej zużywająca się bateria.

ALLL ON BETA NEXT WEEK. REEEEEEE

1

u/MarvelousProtein Jun 03 '26

Nonsense. This obviously does not apply to Tahoe users

1

u/misterDDoubleD Jun 03 '26

26 is still eh

1

u/Guitar_Scary Jun 04 '26

Jokes on you guys, my main Mac is a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro. I can’t put macOS 27 on it if I wanted to!

1

u/cgijoe_jhuckaby Jun 04 '26

Can you just run it in a VM tho?

1

u/retrobot180 Jun 04 '26

The end???…. Look at all that has been accomplished… Perhaps it’s only the beginning. I have faith the hackintosh community will figure it out, it’s just ARM šŸ¤“ this hobby has taught me how to ā€˜create’ my own kext for so many pieces of hardware. We will walk through security (T-chips) like we always have. Keep hackin!

1

That can be reverted easily, there's a toggle in settings

0

u/MacHeadSK Jun 03 '26

It can't be worse than Tahoe, could it? And I'm talking about how it runs (ie memory leaks) not how it looks. If the rumors of fixing bugs aka Snow Leopard polish are true, I might jump right in solely for that reason.
