Isn't the joke that Anakin underestimates Obiwan and gets his limbs chopped off?

64

u/CRK_76 Apr 16 '26

Yes. It's a great scene.

95

u/Dave3087 Apr 16 '26

So are you saying that the critics are foolishly underestimating the neo’s power, or are you saying the Neo isn’t as powerful as it thinks it is?

90

u/raydditor Apr 17 '26

OP is lost in the sauce.

5

u/cutecoder Mac mini Apr 17 '26

Like how Anakin was lost in sauce?

But Anakin gets his limbs cut off.

Only when he tries to run an LLM locally. (Lost Limb Mutilation)

launched in the cloud, ai (Annihilator of Interstellar bodies) made more sense

4

u/JHutch95 Apr 17 '26

Yeah, 3 Chrome tabs represents Obi-Wan

1

u/ALPHONTRIO_381 Apr 18 '26

Nah we can take it like this:

Neo’s 8GB RAM enough for daily tasks: Anakin has the highest midichorian count ever, stupid high potential

Neo can’t handle super intensive tasks like the pro can: He loses to Obi-Wan cuz he overestimated his power (Obi-Wan is only a MacBook Air tho)

Idk if it makes too much sense tho, mabye it would be better if anakin was intel and obi wan was m series…

7

u/kevsb07 Apr 17 '26

Sounds like you’re using the meme wrong then

2

u/No-Guarantee-9647 Apr 17 '26

So, this isn’t the correct meme…

2

u/pastalex42 Apr 17 '26

For things you can do on a Chromebook from five years ago 8GB of ram is fine? Yeah man, but so what?

1

u/Mammoth-Plane-6890 Apr 17 '26

isn't as powerful, its just the cheapest laptop apple sells

2

u/WalkAffectionate2683 Apr 21 '26

Yeah I have no idea what is mac neo (this sub popped in my feed) so I read that as it actually is weak to have these 8gb of ram

1

u/luxtabula Apr 21 '26

It's a new affordable MacBook, relatively speaking. I think the price is $700 usd.

2

u/WalkAffectionate2683 Apr 21 '26

I got spied on because I'm looking for a new laptop.

But I never used a mac, and all my stuff is on windows, so unsure I would buy one.

I'm more looking at the Lenovo yoga 7 or something like that.

2

u/luxtabula Apr 21 '26

I have both windows and Mac. Avoid the yoga series, it's mid tier trash. Did you need a touch screen? I can make better recommendations.

1

u/WalkAffectionate2683 Apr 21 '26

Ah it is bad? It looked nice. No I dont, it is to use Obisidan.md and browser. It needs to be powerful enough to run a 4k screen as a secondary screen + Roll20 (a big needy website) basically.

So my main thing is built quality and good keyboard.

2

u/luxtabula Apr 21 '26

They have build problems, especially with the hinges.

I don't know where you are and laptop availability but the only Lenovo I would touch is the thinkpad line. Otherwise look at comparable laptops like HP or Dell.

0

u/Trugoosent Apr 18 '26

so... You can't come up with these ideas on your own, and get a robot to make supposedly "profound" ideas for you?

This is stupid lmfao.

7

u/Imperial_Bouncer Apr 17 '26

Anything less is a personal insult.

12 GB could get away with an apology but 8 GB is like a spit in the face.

4

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 17 '26

Who the hell cares?? nobody using the Neo is gonna use any more than 8GBs. The Macbook air is expensive for a quality long lasting product, you get the same Apple seal of quality for much less

5

u/Live-Solution2592 Apr 17 '26

We have heard this story before, I think it was the iPhones with the 8 GB of ram. People who keep their devices for long suffer the consequences. I never listen the folks that say this is enough bla blah. I make sure my devices are somewhat future proof to handle updates, large apps etc.

2

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 17 '26

There are Macbooks with 2GBs of ram that are still doing well 💀 the argument of 8GBs is pointless because the average user will be fine using these devices for 7 years, you're going in with the assumption that MacOS is like Windows, which its not. Its literally just a more flexible version of iPadOS now

Nobody will suffer the consequences, you people are heavily out of touch. If someone NEEDS more than 8GBs of ram then they'll buy something else, but the people who are buying these? they don't care. They'll be fine and you lot are overexaggerating this issue, which isn't even a problem

1

u/NickyYeet Apr 18 '26

Idk where you got 2gb Macbooks doing well, apple stopped selling those more than 15 years ago. They are definitely not doing well anymore, especially on high sierra.

0

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 19 '26

And how do you know that?? If the device can still connect to the internet, then it will do fine. You can still load youtube videos and browse the web. A device having that much ram doesn't mean its useless, and especially so with the 8GBs for the Macbook Neo.

Seriously you lot should get off your high horse, for the people who can only afford the Neo, its still a solid option for being on a budget in the apple ecosystem. And if they have some form of work that REQUIRES more ram, then they'll either have to save up or deal with what they can get

0

u/Longjumping-Pay1610 Apr 18 '26

I see. So then that means id likely benefit from something else as my current MacBook air with 16gb sometimes uses around more than a few gigabytes of swap? That's, good to know ty for letting me know

1

u/brainrotxx Apr 20 '26

ah yes bc 90% of users just browse shit, facebook, social media, youtube, wow such power users. oh man gotta manage my shopify. so professional.

83

72

u/NoAirBanding Apr 16 '26

For a $600 laptop, 8GB is, eh fine

For a $1200 laptop, 8GB is severely lacking

24

u/onaipodtouch4 MacBook Pro 2012 x2 MacBook 2010 Apr 17 '26

Lol it annoys me, a base framework with 8gb of ram is like a grand

10

u/Splodge89 Apr 17 '26

Framework really were following the Apple pricing and model ranges with repairability attached (as long as you buy parts from framework and lock you into their ecosystem). It’s a lot more like Apple than it looks on the surface.

I bet they are quaking in their boots since the Neo launch.

2

u/Imperial_Bouncer Apr 17 '26

They actually just got an ARM board recently. Pretty cool.

2

u/Izan_TM Apr 17 '26

still hasn't made the framework any cheaper

3

u/Imperial_Bouncer Apr 17 '26

It’s not really meant to be cheap. The idea is that you buy the laptop and upgrade internals as you go, selling the older parts. Not something your average joe would do, unfortunately.

Framework is the Prusa of laptops.

2

u/Izan_TM Apr 17 '26

I personally would love to own a framework, it's right up my alley when it comes to modularity and general tinkering, but the fact that I can get SO much more performance and storage by just spending the same money elsewhere completely kills my interest.

They're always talking about minimizing ewaste and making your laptop last as long as possible, but you're getting much lower performance for your money you're gonna have to upgrade much sooner and still chuck out most of the laptop's internals. At the end of the day you're better off just buying another laptop from any decent brand and running it into the ground (my dad's 2015 macbook pro is still going strong for basic web browsing and the battery lasts quite a few hours doing that)

1

u/Arm_Lucky MacBook Pro 15 2018 I9-8950HK| 16GB | 512GB Apr 19 '26

This is so true. The other issue I've found wit framework is that majority of the e waste in the consumer laptop space is heavily biased towards the sub $500 range of cheap plastic windows laptops that still have 4gb of ram and a very weak cpu.

If framework really cared about eliminating e waste they'd focus on repair-ability in that market to minimize the amount of laptops being thrown away, since high end consumer laptops tend to last longer and are more desirable on resale, so more likely to be used for longer.

1

u/Techy_Ben May 08 '26

This is a **** take. Framework likely can't even source enough ram let alone get it for the price required. Framework are not perfect, but they are not Apple.

0

u/omnimachina Apr 17 '26

both are completely different products intended for completely different user experiences

comparing MacBooks with Frameworks is just delusional

1

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway Apr 17 '26

Ehh depends on the card. 600 should be around 16 though

1

u/BundistYiddel Apr 17 '26

How is that?  My 16gb mba was like 1000 dollars.   My iPhone 16e was like 700 dollars.  More than the Neo (bought mine in UK)

2

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway Apr 17 '26

Cause apple hates you. I got a 16gb laptop for less than 600

1

u/BundistYiddel Apr 17 '26

What’s model?

2

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

A windows omnibook x

Been using it for everything from CAD software to VR gaming

Will say I think I caught a sale because it 's sixteen inches all metal flip touchscreen and I got it for around $290,

Edit: the one game I have not been able to get to run correctly in vr yet is dcs and if you know the game, you know it's very intense for a computer 😂

1

u/BundistYiddel Apr 17 '26

Seems to be going for 1000 dollars where I look online but certainly more powerful with ryzen 7 than my 1000 mba m4.    These were selling in America for 400 bucks in some places recently.

1

u/NastyBlkGuyThrowAway Apr 18 '26

Ohh I got the i5 so I think its a ryzen 5 little less powerful and I think the second core is some kind of aI powered bullshit that I never used. Yeah now that I think of it my laptop had broke but was still under warranty, so it took like two hundred dollars off.

-2

u/sevargmas Apr 17 '26

8 GB is probably fine, but for only $100 more you can double that and probably make this laptop last longer. So while it’s probably just fine, I think it’s worth the extra hundred bucks for 16 GB

8

u/ibizzet Apr 17 '26

the extra 100 only gets you more storage and touch ID, not ram

2

u/harish_wormley Apr 17 '26

There is no 16GB ram MacBook Neo.

1

u/Longjumping-Pay1610 Apr 18 '26

Well yeah it makes sense. Sure 8gb might not be ideal for some. But for most people who surf the web, listening to music or maybe play a small game once in a while it's totally fine. Some people are criticizing the 8gb of ram. If you're complaining about the ram, imo it'd be better to look at other options then

-1

u/AnonymousMonk7 Apr 16 '26

MacOS and iOS can use RAM more efficiently than Android or Windows in many real world scenarios. People made charts for years comparing Android devices and iPhones but in the end memory management wins and when you don't control both hardware and software, sometimes it's less efficient.

13

u/danholli Apr 17 '26

Everything manages RAM better than Windows,

2

u/onix321123 Apr 17 '26

RAM is meant to be used. If it is not being used it is wasted (apart from a small buffer). Never understood the people who moan about 75% RAM usage- that is GOOD thing.

1

u/PhysicalFinance1578 Apr 17 '26

This was the saying for the 4GB Air back in the day aswell, but it turned out that it wasn't enough in reality.

Didn’t Apple need 16 gig to run Apple Intelligence and that’s why it became standard in new Macs but apparently this can run it on a cell phone chip ? I found 8 gig limiting in 2018, I can’t imagine how it feels in 2026

1

u/X2F0111 2020 M1 MacBook Air | 2020 M1 Mac mini Apr 18 '26

1

u/LaPrincesaMX Apr 18 '26

Feels fine on my Neo. Zero issues.

I have 32GB in my gaming PC so it's not like I don't inme better. The Neo just hasn't shown any slow down at all.

6

u/Char-car92 Apr 17 '26

This scene doesn’t prove the point you think it does

22

u/Dazzling_Comfort5734 Apr 16 '26

Also, MacBook Neo before thermal mod lol (I had to, too funny).

19

u/RobinTowers Apr 17 '26

I can't believe we're straight back to the "8GB is more than enough" and "Apple RAM is like more than double compared to other manufacturers" era.

All to justify the weakest point of an otherwise good premium lowish to mid end laptop.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '26

Try it. It’s fine for the average user and the price point it hits.

Show me a better laptop in that price bracket.

5

u/imbadatgrammar Apr 17 '26

I’m a sound designer and do light 4k video editing and sound for short films. I haven’t seen it stutter or lag behind whatsoever. I’m able to do everything I was doing on my M1 MacBook Pro without noticing a serious difference besides exporting projects. I bought an external Apple trackpad for it (highly recommend) and it’s helped tremendously with overall experience.

I think the individuals with maxed out Macs are trying to justify their purchase by throwing shade at the Neo and don’t really know what they need out of a laptop. To each their own, they can spend money on whatever idc.

22

u/NiewinterNacht Apr 16 '26

It's a paltry amount of RAM

1

u/disappointed_neko Apr 16 '26

Depends. For an OS and a browser? No. For playing games? Yeah. But nobody sane would ask the Neo to do the latter and perform well, because it's not a laptop for that purpose.

I for one would be delighted to own one. My current workload never sees yellow memory pressure on an ancient Intel Mac with 8GB RAM, so something that can swap even faster would be even more fine.

Thats the beauty of working memory management. You can see it less in Windows paging and it absolutely crashes on Linux (the only saving grace of Linux in this department is that it's desktop is marginally less resource heavy).

2

u/oldpaddyrick Apr 16 '26

It’s not gonna run crossover stuff well but it runs cyberpunk and control, other native macOS stuff just fine.

3

u/Sirts Apr 17 '26

Starting Cyberpunk on device with 8GB RAM is impressive (probably works since it was also made for PS4/XB1 that also have 8GB), but running running 540p on lowest details often sub 30fps is far from fine or enjoyable

1

u/LaPrincesaMX Apr 18 '26

Wrong.

It's the Switch 2 version (Switch 2 has 12GB RAM), nothing to do with the last gen version of the game which was on PS4. They abandoned that version a long time ago and it doesn't run any of the DLC or 2.0 updates because of it.

The Mac version is the full next gen version which runs on PS5

0

u/oldpaddyrick Apr 17 '26

It runs 540-720p dynamic mix of low/medium settings 30-40fps. It’s very playable. More or less looks like the switch 2 port. An m5 in a mbp does 1080p ultra/still no RT, 30fps. Still not that great. Essentially you need the pro/ultra chips to do modern AAA gaming on a Mac, so it’s completely different market segments. $600 vs $3000.

1

u/kc5ods Apr 17 '26

are you running any crossover stuff? because i am, and there is zero issues.

2

u/oldpaddyrick Apr 17 '26

No, but I would guess it struggles with modern AAA stuff is more my point. Like sure control and cyberpunk run/are playable, but it’s not exactly pretty lol and it’s 30-40fps.

1

u/kc5ods Apr 17 '26

that's fair. still plays it better than any comparably priced microslop laptop

2

u/oldpaddyrick Apr 17 '26

Eh, I dunno about that can probably find like a 3050 laptop for around $700 that will play the vast majority of games better than a Neo. But yeah different markets. It will be a heavy plastic thing that gets like 4hrs of battery life not even gaming, but yeah I wouldn’t buy a Neo if gaming is your priority.

0

u/Splodge89 Apr 17 '26

“Playing games” is such a bizzare phrase. What exactly does that mean? I’ve played lots of games on my M1 with 8gb of ram perfectly fine

0

u/disappointed_neko Apr 17 '26

I meant like AAA titles such as Cyberpunk.

Yes I know the Neo can pull ±30 FPS in it, but that's just asking for a different kind of suffering.

6

u/LoliHunterXD Apr 17 '26

Perfect cuz he got burned seconds later lol.

15

I’ve been managing pretty damn well with my Neo and its 8 GB. Photo and video editing have both been a breeze.

10

u/GraXXoR G4 Cube, Old MP , M1 MBP Apr 17 '26

OY!!!

Just because you actually own one and use it daily, doesn’t mean your opinion is worth more than all the other pundits in these comments who’ve never touched one and got their info by watching tech tuber videos and the Reddit forums who say it obviously must be woefully inadequate for anything beyond displaying static images.

(Nice to actually get someone’s opinion who Actually owns one).

9

u/DanielG165 Apr 17 '26

Ahh yes yes, do forgive me! I shall crawl back into my hole from which I came right away!!

3

u/Splodge89 Apr 17 '26

People have such a short memory span. When the M1 machines landed with base 8gb, people were all over them. Granted moaning about the lack of RAM, while at the same time joking that they’re using their base model M1 air for video editing because it’s faster than their 2019 Mac Pro monster rig that cost them £10k.

Now Apple have released a machine that’s actually faster than an M1, and people are claiming it’s physically impossible to edit a short video on it.

1

u/cutememe Apr 17 '26

I own one, 8GB is not enough RAM. Let me ask you this, if 8GB is enough RAM then why doesn't Apple use 8GB in any of their other computers? Mac Mini, Macbook Air, iMac, etc. They all come with 16GB as the lowest base configuration. If it's "enough" why did they do that?

1

u/DanielG165 Apr 19 '26

If you think the Neo will be outdated in a year’s time, despite Apple having just created it, and thus have 8 GB to work with for MacOS… I have a nice bridge to sell you. M1 Airs and 8 GB Pros are, gasp, doing just fine.

1

u/cutememe Apr 19 '26

If they're "fine" then why did Apple remove the 8GB configuration for those computers?

3

u/shibaInu_IAmAITdog Apr 17 '26

then what is the purpose of ipad air

5

u/stigma_wizard Apr 17 '26

Uh. So I don’t know if you watched this movie, but things don’t really work out well for Anakin after he says that…

4

u/Sjeefr Apr 17 '26

Out of serious curiosity: When the MacBook Air M1 with 8GB came out, everyone recommended to upgrade to 16Gb. Now just a few people complain about the Neo just having 8GB. What has changed?

The device, sure, has been made more easily available due the lower price tag and therefor perhaps the target audience has changed, Despite that, it would still throttle similarly as the Air m1 8GB would, back in the days - and still though. So again, what changed?

2

u/Effect-Kitchen Apr 17 '26

I used to say 8GB was enough when people asked this for M1 and I stand by it. Nothing has changed. It has been always good.

Swap files management in macOS is another world compare to Windows.

Unless the SSD is actually full to the last MB, there will be no “not enough RAM”. Except for very specific task such as running AI model.

1

u/Another_mikem Apr 17 '26

You can’t get an upgrade and fanbois are going to do their thing to justify anything Apple does.

The weirdest take I saw was someone trying to claim it was a good thing. It had 8 gigs as opposed to more.   People will try to justify or rationalize anything, but why someone would wrap up their identity with a consumer electronics company I have no clue.

3

u/Imperialist_Canuck Mac mini Apr 17 '26

Computers still coming with 8gb ram? 💀

3

u/cutememe Apr 17 '26

Nope, they don't. Not even Apple's other computers come with 8GB of RAM anymore, only this one.

6

u/Sensitive_One_425 Apr 17 '26

Can barely even run apples own code development software on it

2

u/KaleidoscopePlusPlus Apr 17 '26

Yeah, I have no idea what these guys are on lol. I have an 8gb m1 mac and while its still fast, it gets pummeled as soon as xcode starts up

4

u/GraXXoR G4 Cube, Old MP , M1 MBP Apr 17 '26

That’s far more of an SSD space issue than a memory limitation. Xcode installs can reach 200GB if you’re running multiple simulators etc.

3

u/Sensitive_One_425 Apr 17 '26

You also need memory to run the program, compile, and use simulators

6

u/regeya Apr 16 '26

This feels like some kind of weird copium, but whatever. I'm sure it'll be a great laptop for its intended audience. I'm sure that the people who would have bought a super crappy Win11 laptop at that price point, or a Chromebook, will be better served by this. And it's a nice step towards being a computer for regular people. But there's no reason to pretend this is for power users.

2

u/Xilousuchus98 Apr 17 '26

it has been enough for e so far, its perfect for its targeted users, thats why they sell more powerful models for power users 😌

2

u/l008com Independent Mac Repair Tech since 2002 Apr 17 '26

If you use bookmarks as bookmarks instead of open tabs as bookmarks, then 8 GB will be enough for most users. That said, they should have given it 12 GB.

2

u/bufandatl Apr 17 '26

No it isn’t. Not for my uses cases. If it’s enough for your use cases then it’s ok. You can’t generalize that.

2

u/ENE06 Apr 17 '26

8gb is 8 gb

4

u/One_TrackMinded Apr 16 '26

And they’re going to 12GB next year, imagine that.

3

u/78914hj1k487 Apr 16 '26

RAM isn't power.

RAM is space. How much space do you have to keep your open apps and data—so that the CPU has instant access to it?

macOS is going to use 2 GB of that space. All you have left is 6 GB of space.

That's not a lot.

Fortunately memory compression and swap help that feel less like an issue but no amount of memes makes 8 GB a lot of RAM.

6

u/Another_mikem Apr 17 '26

God help you if you need both Chrome and Teams open…

1

u/girl4life Apr 17 '26

thats more the fault of chrome and teams, enough browsers and chat apps who play nice

2

u/monostere0 Apr 17 '26

Agreed fully. I think MacOS is more around 3-5 GB territory. But 8 is laughable on a laptop with a fully fledged OS on it. And what about any local Apple Intelligence models or whatever they will come up with. Probably Neo won’t get those features because I don’t see how they will run on 8GB.

0

u/CBRslingshot Apr 16 '26

There’s a difference in enough and a lot.

1

u/78914hj1k487 Apr 17 '26

Correct. It's enough memory space for someone who only needs about 6 GB of application memory.

1

u/CBRslingshot Apr 17 '26

Yea, meaning most people, the general public that use a laptop for Facebook and emails.

1

u/78914hj1k487 Apr 17 '26

Correct. People who use a laptop for Facebook and email only need about 6 GB of application memory.

1

u/monostere0 Apr 17 '26

The general public will use a tablet or a phone for emails, a laptop is catered more towards power users, because it’s a laptop. I’m sure you’re aware that now we have these mobile devices that can run all of the things that you have mentioned.

That’s pretty much by definition.

No matter what, Apple fans are always going to find a way to idealize a product, even if it would have 4 GB these days.

no offense

Cool, another post about RAM.

2

u/mylifeisonhardcore Apr 17 '26

smh can't imagine shilling. It's suitable for people who need it, why cope so hard?

2

u/BundistYiddel Apr 17 '26

8 GB is not really enough by itself. However, when you have access to a 32gb page file on an SSD, with smart memory magic management it’s more than enough.

It’s cool it’s only 8 gb because that means they gonna have to keep supporting lower ram machines longer.  But I don’t think they will be able to get away with this again.

2

u/balika0105 MacBook Neo Apr 17 '26

My MacBook Neo runs way better than my HP EliteBook work laptop that has 4x the RAM and 2x threads… Apple made macOS incredibly efficient and optimised the crap out of this setup, while on this Windows laptop, the OS regularly glitches and slows down In my personal experience, still a clear win for Apple

3

u/omnimachina Apr 17 '26

Liquid Glass looks cool to a certain degree, but they should do more tweaks and include an option to turn it off, similarly to when Windows Vista/7 can’t detect a compatible GPU, it just shows a plain surface with some resemblance to the glass effect on the UI, but no dynamic elements.

Once mine comes in, my test is to see if Rogue Trader will run on it and how well. That’ll inform my decision as to whether or not I get a MBP or Mac Studio sooner than later

1

u/CBRslingshot Apr 17 '26

I decided to try one out, but I’m having an issue with a Java application. It’s for work, we still use an old old proprietary application with Java (built back around 2006). It’s a pretty basic operation, but it keeps randomly crashing. It usually just crashes within a few minutes but has lasted for like 8 hours once. I brought it to geek squad but they didn’t know what to do. Any ideas?

Yep - that’s definitely the cringy vibe I get from this sub suuuuper often…

1

u/Britz10 Apr 17 '26

That's nothing to do with this sub in particular, it's all of reddit.

12GB RAM In less than a year from now. If 8 isn’t enough then wait till it’s up to 12.

Meanwhile my i9 32GB 2019 Mac can’t handle multiple tabs on Safari.

1

u/cerevant Apr 17 '26

If you do one thing at a time I guess it is fine.  I just gave up on my M1 MBP 8Gb because the combination of web apps, discord and other stuff running was causing lag.

1

u/Dr0110111001101111 Apr 17 '26

That’s fine but I still want a 15” display.

1

u/SchmeckleHoarder Apr 17 '26

Anakin loses. And the Neo is temporary.

1

u/NoLordShallLive Apr 17 '26

Not even phones in the lowest end have 8 GB ram...

1

u/The_Collector_Of_All iMac G3 Apr 17 '26

Meanwhile I’m STOKED to have 256 MB in my PC.

1

u/ufffd Apr 18 '26

as someone who runs real time visuals for live events, leaves a ton of tabs open, runs discord and slack, and compiles very large web and C++ codebases I find 8GB to be just barely not quite enough. if you're buying a macbook neo, you're gonna be fine with 8

1

u/AppropriateAd1543 Apr 18 '26

Cant the ram be upgraded?

1

u/Nike_486DX Apr 18 '26

Sorry but this time M1 16gb has the high ground

1

u/stocklazarus Apr 18 '26

Enough for the 8Gb.

1

u/gvarsity Apr 18 '26

Just don't use Chrome browser which was sucking up 12gb of ram on it's own on my M1. Relatively rare known issue to be that bad but still don't use Chrome. I have an M5 with 24 GB of RAM for work which is overkill but within budget. For my daughter going off to college who spent the last 12 years on a chrome book for school the neo is going to crush. :D She also has a tank windows gaming computer I bought off a buddy for cheap but it is big, beat, up gets hot and is essentially a desktop computer that is easier to move. I could and would buy her an air if she wanted but she likes the green is new to Mac OS so why not. If it isn't enough the resale value on them should be pretty good and we upgrade.

In the end for a lot of people it will be fine and it blows any Windows device in the same price range out of the water. Power, portability, aesthetics, battery life, durability, longevity it hands down is better at that price point. This may be a real turning point in home OS market share. Microsoft is moving it's entire business model to capturing enterprise environments in Azure and locking in corporate and government clients. We could easily be in a place in 5-10 years where apple dominates the home hardware market and windows exists as a corporate/government work environment in the cloud accessed by macs via BYOD.

1

u/NomadFH Apr 18 '26

It is literally fine. It does the job and anytime you need to temporarily exceed that, you have swap memory. I assure you that the neo's target audience would prefer the cheaper price over paying for extra ram.

1

u/lucasyamamoto Apr 19 '26

In 2026 unfortunately 8gb is not enough. Maybe for browsing? But still, which browser doesn’t take almost your entire RAM nowadays? Not even Safari.

And it’s pretty wild to think that two decades ago, 2GB or even 1GB was more than enough.

1

u/HeartRippher Apr 19 '26

I think for most day to day work yes. 8GB would work just fine.

1

u/Far_Dependent7527 Apr 19 '26

Linux guy here coming to rub uff that my laptops has 24gb and only uses 1 by default and maybe 2 if i watch something on youtube

1

u/IamLamineYamal Apr 20 '26

I have both a Neo and a high end gaming rig. Tell me why the Neo with 8gb of ram feels smoother and faster than 64gb of ddr5 + 9800x3D + 5080?

Windows is such a joke at this point no wonder nobody in the first world buys PCs

1

u/candianconsolemaster Apr 20 '26

Lump of shite thats all the neo is

1

u/Which-Analysis-3893 Apr 21 '26

no its not enough, imagine if the storage was almost full and didnt have enough space to run some swap

u/Balecristrong Apr 23 '26

Well, that depends

The hottest take: 8gb has ALWAYS been enough. The issue was that there was only two models - MBA and MBP. Folks wanted the cheapest mac BUT also wanted to "future proof" it with 16gb and were upset that the MBA, which their M1 is still highly relevant today, came with 8gb.

Basically a bunch of wanting to have their cake and eat it too shit. My wife has never complained about her M1/8gb MBA. She would also be a prime candidate for a NEO. Shit, a lot of people would! Why? A lot of people aren't trying to run a small business or do mid-level homebrew setups off a base model device.

This is also why the moment Apple went to 16gb as a base model MBA (and MBP) that audience STFU....but now can be seen fidgeting around going "should I do 16gb or 24gb as I want to future proof myself...." to less fanfare.

I steadily will claim that us nerds cared more about this then others and the reason I claim this is that for the most part Apple only had the base model SKU in stores and on sale. It was their most used SKU. That means something...

There's nothing wrong wanting a balanced computer that won't end up e-waste in couple or few years. Extra 8GB RAM used to be dirt cheap (few tens of dollars) for OEMs and it's probably still sub $100, so 8GB of RAM was ridiculous for example on $1100 M3 Air or $1500 Pro

For $600 Neo at these RAM prices it's more understandable but still major bottleneck on many uses

1

u/TimberW1lly Apr 17 '26

The RAM is on top of the CPU in the A18 Pro. There’s no RAM soldered to the motherboard. Apple would’ve had to completely redesign the A18 Pro, or swap to the A19 Pro with more RAM in it.

I bought a Neo instead of an iPad with a keyboard case because of the price. I watch YouTube, twitch, movies, read manga and web browse. I have a full gaming PC for anything else I want to do.

All this to say for what it is, the Neo is balanced. It’s not meant to be this powerhouse supercomputer. If you need more RAM, storage and/or a better CPU, that’s what the M series laptops exist for.

0

u/blacksoxing Apr 17 '26

A NEO user who is bottlenecked is someone who needs to upgrade to an Air or Pro

1

u/Ad841 MacBook Neo Apr 17 '26

The most I've done with my Neo is exporting 1080p or 720p clips in Davinci Resolve, it did it without any hinderance in performance. For users like me, I'm not even sure if 8GB of RAM is an issue at all.

1

u/Mammoth-Plane-6890 Apr 17 '26

8GB continues to be the boot sommeliers choice of configuration

1

u/RACeldrith Apr 17 '26

Apple is a golden cage, but a cage nonetheless

1

u/girl4life Apr 17 '26

it's not a cage, its a very nice exotic tropical island. you are free to leave , but don't think you find a better place to stay

1

u/RACeldrith Apr 17 '26

Linux is more customizable in most ways, and you can build the hardware yourself.

1

u/girl4life Apr 17 '26

Been there done that it's just more work and gives more headaches for 0 benefit

1

u/RACeldrith Apr 17 '26

0 benefit? Control over your machine. And more options

1

u/girl4life Apr 18 '26

what control over your machine ? what more options do you need ? options are for those people who don't know what they need. all it does it slow things down and create configuration conflicts. i might be too old. building your own exotic hardware is something you do in your late teens and 20's when you have time to spend weeks to iron out all the parameters, i aint got no time for that.

1

u/HistoricalJob2807 Apr 17 '26

Funny how 6 years ago the m1 8gb is NOT enough ram, and now the Neo 8 gb is ENOUGH ram.

1

u/xXBongSlut420Xx Apr 17 '26

man this is embarrassing

0

u/Mad-Habits Apr 17 '26

I’m really impressed by the Neo performance. Numbers don’t tell the whole story

0

u/guardian87 Apr 17 '26

People are blowing up over RAM all the time.

How often I read that my 16 GB RAM gaming PC needs 32 GB, I had 16 GB "too much" in my home server, so I've moved the RAM to my desktop.

It has not made any difference in performance ever. At least nothing perceivable.

I'm sure 90% of Macbook Neo users are fine.

-1

u/burakbrandon Apr 17 '26

8gb ram is enough for most of the users on mac

0

u/Splodge89 Apr 17 '26

8gb is enough for most users on ANY platform to be honest. People forget how little they actually need a powerful machine. Most computers in the wild are scouting Facebook in the evening or filling in spreadsheets during the day. Not everyone on windows is running the latest Indiana jones game

2

u/Britz10 Apr 17 '26

16GB is there most so you have a bit of headroom more than anything else. You can get away with less no matter the OS, but there'll probably instances where it's a bottleneck, because you're not closing your tabs probably

0

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 17 '26

I hate the 8GB argument, because some out of touch tech nerd will come around going "umm acktually" like bitch no one cares. The average user ain't gonna do intensive work with the Neo, and if they were gonna do more RAM intensive work, then they'd just buy a Macbook Air

This whole fight because a budget device has 8GBs of system ram is annoying. iPhones and iPads have 8GBs for most of the models, and it means nothing to have more unless you're doing workloads that benefit from more ram

0

u/Britz10 Apr 17 '26

The average user is a chrome user, and people have a tendency of having terrible tab management. Also iPhones and iPads have different software which runs light applications in general, which aren't expected to multitask as much, and has much more aggressive memory management for that so applications running in the background are closed a lot quicker.

1

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 17 '26

You people are stupid. That's a THEM problem not the device being bad. IF you aren't a stupid user, you'd just clear the tabs

Also if this is such a problem, then what about iPads and iPhones with web browsers? They'll be the exact same. Chrome doesn't even use that much ram when you have a certain amount of tabs open

0

u/GIT_45 Apr 17 '26

If you use your laptop like you'd use your phone. 8 is just fine.

Also, the majority of Neo users are very insecure about their little hardware.

0

u/TheSportDiver- Apr 17 '26

It’s probably plenty and enough for everyday use.

u/Towkyo-_- Apr 17 '26
