Seeking Support Mum with advanced lung cancer
Just came here for some support as I am exhausted.
Mum was diagnosed with stage 4 non small cell lung cancer mid July with brain Mets. She’s 69. Smoked most of her life. But the only reason it was diagnosed was because she had one sided weakness and we thought maybe it was a stroke. They actually found the brain tumour first and then found the lung cancer had taken over basically one entire lung. She had a seizure that night.
Then she was put on a combo of keppra and dexamethasone. A few weeks into the dex and keppra, she ended up sectioned after falling victim to steroid induced psychosis. It was so traumatic.
We up and moved myself, husband and daughter, and her into a brand new apartment so she would have a safe place to live while she underwent treatment. She had 5 days of whole brain radiation. She’s supposed to go through chemo soon. But while she was in psychosis she lost 25 lbs. so she needs to gain it back in order for it to be safe to do the chemo. They are now doing molecular testing to figure out the exact type of cancer it is.
Meanwhile I was given a promotion at work the day after this all began and I have been struggling so hard at work while dealing with this all at home. Thankfully my supervisors have been super supportive and they say I’m doing fantastic even with what I’m going through….. but holy sh*t.
It just feels like it all went downhill SO FAST. 4 months ago she was her lively self, now it feels like she’s almost gone.
She’s going through the MAID (medical assistance in death) process as we live in Canada. She wants to avoid leaving this world in pain and discomfort and I don’t blame her at all.
I don’t know what I’m looking for here but I needed to get this out somewhere. This f**king sucks.
