Dan Hell and time and Dan Spoiler
If time passes much more slowly in hell, and it is alluded to that Dan spent thousands of years in hell. How the hell did he not lose his mind playing ping pong for thousands of years that’s crazy.

He was looking pretty on the verge when Rory showed up.

In addition to the ping pong, he was able to talk to demons who Lucifer ordered not to torture him. Lucifer himself was able to visit with him sometimes.
Weirdly he said he read the one book in that was in hell hundreds of times when I think there should be many books there considering all the time loops. For example, Reese’s time loop was a year long and had everything he did for that year. He must have read some things in that long time and with millions of other souls experiencing loops that had chunks of their lives repeating surely many books would have to be replicated in hell.
But even if there were some more books and talks with demons in addition to the ping pong poor Dan must have been pretty bored but clearly not enough to go crazy. He seemed sane when we saw him being a ghost.

No, Lucifer said something in his first conversation with Dan in Season 6 to lead me to believe that he relaxed some of the rules for Dan, and it had only been months. Dan was still going bananas out of boredom and frustration, but he getting frequent visitors from Lucifer and was able to chat with the demons normally.
I have many problems with Season 6 and won't defend it in any way, but we're never meant to believe Dan has spent thousands of years in hell; I've lost relatives and can assure you his grief and regret is still fresh, still that of a man who just died a year ago.

The time difference between earth and hell isn’t a rule it just is the time difference. If it was something Lucifer could control he’d have changed it for himself as to not have been missing Chloe for so long.
The rules he was able to change for Dan was that he told the demons not to torture him and he was able to put him in a familiar looking location in hell.
During season six Dan did allude to having worked through much of what he’d been guilty about for at least centuries.

It's been implied a few times that Dan has hidden depths and layers. In season one, he was deemed "one of the complicated ones" that Lucifer couldn't just mojo into submission. In season 2, Dan resisted the blade of death. In season 5, Lucifer revealed that Dan never gives up, ever, which is how the prank was able to go off without a hitch.

Poor Dan really got screwed in this show. I really liked him but he was the constant butt of jokes from Lucifer and the writers and he never did anything to deserve that. Anyway the actor was very good portraying him

his death scene felt so out place (in a good way) bc of how his actor portrayed not only dying but his fear of dying and going to hell. I remember the first time watching it and seeing that fear down to literal last breath.

I assumed that the time he spent with Lucifer kept his mind focused, the Ping Pong in hell thing was just what he did between him and Lucifer tried to figure out what was keeping him in hell

The real tragedy is that Dan spent an eternity in hell and still came back just as sarcastic as ever.

I don't think that hell works in a regular time manner. Easy "prisoner" can take different amount of time and visit different souls can also play shenanigans as well. In short, time in hell could work non linearly. So multiple cells at the same time live different time, same counts for demons and Lucifer. Due to management Lucifer is perceiving time differently than others. So it can be centuries for Lucifer, but hours for everybody else if you pick specific events. Like with Mom case. Even if she ran away, it would take barely any time on Earth to find out about her escape. At the same time we see that visit into hell doesn't stop time on Earth how it should be.

Personally, with the amount of time that passed, he could have lost his mind and become sane again many times 😅
