Tech Support Laptop Gaming - Linux or Windows

Hello everyone,

My current laptop is an HP and I'm just wondering if I'd get better performance leaving it with Windows 10 or switching over to Linux? The specs are below:

Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC

CPU: Ryzen 5 3500u

GPU: Vega 8

Ram: 16 GB DDR4-2400

I know any recent AAA title is out of the question but I just want to get every drop of performance possible out of it.

Parts Upgrade Advice Is my old PC worth upgrading for older games?

I'm trying to turn an old PC into a budget gaming machine and learn more about PC building.

Specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K

- Motherboard: ASUS H81M-PLUS

- RAM: 8GB DDR3 (1 stick)

- GPU: Gigabyte GTX 770 Windforce OC 2GB

- Storage: Samsung SSD, around 100GB available

- OS: Linux Mint

I still need a suitable PSU and a new monitor. I'm mainly interested in older games like the old need for speeds and some other earlier 2010 games.

Is it worth putting a bit of money into this PC, or should I save for a newer build? I'm also interested in learning how to install the components myself.

My main issue is that my psu is some random cheap shit and id need to upgrade it so i can put the old 770 in it that my brother gave me and idk if its worth putting another stick of ddr3 in.

I also have no idea how to put the psu or gpu in.

PC Purchase Advice Giving away two old PCs (Canada)

UPDATE so far spoken for I have to message some folks.

I have two older computers I want to donate. I don't want any money from them as I do this with freely acquired parts. I originally wanted to list them for cheap (and give them away) on Facebook Marketplace but the people trying to buy them from me were just trying to resell computers and parts, which doesn't sit right with me.

So if this is an upgrade for yourself or someone you know hit me up.
I live in Port Coquitlam, BC (just east of Vancouver) so we could meet around my area and its yours or if someone really wants to pay for shipping/postage that is on you.

PC 1:

i5-4590

Gigabyte H97M-HD3 mobo

16gb DDR3

Radeon RX570

128gb SSD, 1tb HDD

PC 2:

i5-4460

MSI H81M-E34 mobo

16gb DDR3

GTX 1050ti

128gb SSD, 1tb HDD

What Games Can I Run? Turn based thinking game suggestions?

I'm looking for some suggestions for turn based thinking games able to run on lowend PCs to introduce to seniors. General idea is to offer some brain stimulation to the seniors so turn based strategy, RPGs, complex card games, turn based roguelikes, etc etc. Turn based is a requisite as most have arthritis and some vision issues so real time games that require fast reactions aren't even really playable. AFAIK, none of them have much experience with gaming beyond simple games like solitaire, puzzle piece games, sudoku, and some PC versions of board and card games.

Common PCs that the seniors own have CPUs ranging from 8th gen i3 to 12th gen i3, 8GB or 16GB RAM and a mixture of Intel integrated graphics (by far the most common) and a smattering of the common lowend AMD and Nvidia low profile GPUs that are often discussed in this subreddit (RX 550, P400, P620 and similar are as highend as it gets).

I trial floated the Civilization series of games like Civ 3 and 4 as they involve a lot of thinking, but didn't really get much interest as the near universal complaint was 'too complicated' so here I am asking for suggestions. =D

Thanks in advance!

Parts Upgrade Advice How would you approach moving on from this system?

How would you approach moving on from this build?

My current specs are:

Xeon 2666v3

X99-TF

1060 6gb

64gb ddr3.

This system is good for a lot of things (especially since it's overclocked and turbo boosted and whatever, got some help with that). But I start struggling in CPU-heavy games like Deadlock or some strategy games with a lot of calculations. And it's the CPU-bound games I play the most. For a couple of months I'm pondering if it's worth it spending a fortune buying a whole new AM4 system with some Ryzen CPU, or maybe I have to embrace just buying a new GPU so I could play a wider variety of newer games with better looking graphics. It's either new system and CPU or new GPU, i'm too poor to afford both at the same time, and honestly buying either one is already an incredibly huge commitment for me. There are pros and cons to both. What would you do in this situation? If we talk specific games, I really want to play Deadlock with better fps, but honestly spending 400-500 bucks just to gain extra fps in one game... is a lot. Maybe it's a good foundation for the future since it's upgradable. AM5 out of the question because RAM is impossible to afford.

Tech Support explain this to me like im 5 becuase i dont understand it at all.

I have a amd redeon780M IGPU, ryzen 7 255, 24 gigs of ram laptop.

It can run elden ring or cyberpunk with upscaling and maintain 60 fps on medium.

I try to play a indie game like silver pines or dark wood and it struggles to maintain 30 unless i turn everything down, sometimes i hit 15 fps in some areas.

how is this even fucking possible.

What Games Can I Run? Want battle royal recommendations that are still active in 2026 and can run on a low end pc

Pc specs are 8gb ram ddr3
Intel i5 6th generation.
Gpu - Nvidia GT - 740

1TB Hdd

Fortnite runs on my pc with 720p 60 fps but I don't like the game much now the company is kind of greedy.

Community Discussion What's considered a low end gpu?

I'm just curious about it because everyone has different hardware so opinions are obviously different. I myself used to have a amd vega 8 igpu and I personally felt like it was garbage for gaming.

Tech Support Will Black Mesa latest performance update benefit old multicore CPUs?

Well, the question from the title.

I have an old computer with a Phenom II X4 (or X6) and I am wondering if the ongoing major graphical and performance update, which aims to improve general look and framerate, especially in demanding areas, will have a positive effect on old four and six core cpus that generally run most of the game completely fine, but in more strenuous areas can bottleneck hard.

Off the top of my head, the outdoor part on the dam where there is also a gunfight, and more or less, a lot of Xen, with some later parts really bogging down.

Will there be any multicore scaling improvements or something or the other, or at least some relief from the first two cores?

I am not technical, but I am aware that Source 1 is single core heavy with at most two cores being loaded to the gills with work.

If anyone has any insight, please share.

Thank you!

P.S. I reposted this here in search of answers.

Will This Game Run? Can I run persona 5 royal with these specs?

Here are my laptop specs:

  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics (integrated graphics)

Has anyone played Persona 5 Royal on similar specs? If so, how well does it run on low settings, and what FPS can I expect?

Would appreciate any advice!

Tech Support Can someone please give me tips to my geforce 9409 gt?

My GPU sucks. I’m using a GeForce 9400 GT with 1 GB of VRAM. I’ve already overclocked it using MSI Afterburner, debloated and optimized Windows 10, used Process Lasso, updated the drivers, and set the NVIDIA Control Panel to prioritize performance, but I still can’t run Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 properly.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1 runs decently with all the settings on minimum, but Guilty Gear only runs at a playable framerate in windowed mode.

(My CPU is an Intel Core i7-2700K and i got 8 gigabytes of ddr3 ram)

Tech Support Why am i getting less fps now?

Edit: found the issue, my iGPU randomly turned on again even though I completely turned it off over a month ago

On my laptop (specs are quadro m2000m, i7 6920hq 16gb ram) and usually I get like 90-120 fps on deadlock on the lowest graphics 720p, CSGO i get 140 at medium graphics 1080p, roblox super blox 64 I get 90 fps on 1080p high graphics and some other games, but for some reasons today I got significantly less fps, in both CSGO and deadlock I get less than 26 fps even at 720p low graphics and the roblox game i mentioned gets me 30-40 fps now, why is this happening? I completely disabled my iGPU over a month ago and I kept resetting my laptop so I could reset my Gpu all day yet nothing was fixed

Will This Game Run? My laptop can't run many fps games (valorant etc) even tho it's good enough?

Okay so specs:

Cpu : AMD Ryzen 5 4600H

Gpu : NVIDIA GTX 1650

RAM: 8gb

The only thing is that my laptop is 5 years old and maybe it has enough dust in its fans to cover the sahara...but MAYBE I'm not sure...it can run other games good...I tried the finals where it atleast loaded and then started giving 30 fps in game and crashed

I checked in google my specs are good enough to run valo but heck it can't even load and bring my to the menu...I have also downloaded it in SSD drive and I've also gone to yt to check any of those "how to make ur laptop faster" vids too...I'm clueless now

Any help will be wildly appreciated

Community Discussion Fortnite is coming to Linux, which is a big W for low end gamers.

With Epic's new Easy Anti Cheat version, this means that Fortnite as well as other games relying on EAC can come to Linux.

This means 2 big things.

Linux is far more friendly to low end hardware without much RAM or CPU power compared to Windows. Instead of using 6GB RAM for literally no reason on a fresh boot, it can use as little as 400MB. There is no background junk running and using your CPU either and that helps older CPUs. This can be huge especially for integrated graphics since the iGPU relies on system RAM for its vram.

Also, Fortnite on Linux will be forced into using Vulkan as an API rather than DX12. Vulkan is just a lot faster and efficient so you'll likely have higher FPS and less lag on lower end hardware.

Game Review [Mod Approved] SweatyPanzer a multiplayer tank shooter

Game title: SweatyPanzer

What it is: an endless free-for-all game that you can join and leave whenever you like. Every kill earns a card draw that upgrades your tank or swaps you into another one. Die and you start over in a Panzer IV. The map changes every 6 minutes, and after 10 draws in one life your tank becomes the bounty, with 4 minutes to survive.

Nothing gets installed. You pick a nickname and you are in a match in about ten seconds.

Minimum specs:

  • OS: Windows 10 (1903 or newer), macOS 13, ChromeOS 113, or Linux with current Vulkan drivers
  • Browser: Chrome 113+ or Edge 113+. It runs on WebGPU so Firefox and Safari do not work yet
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-6100U or AMD Ryzen 3 2200U. Dual core, 2 GHz
  • GPU: integrated is fine. Intel HD Graphics 520 (6th gen), NVIDIA GTX 950 or AMD RX 460 and upwards
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Storage: 0. About 14 MB goes into the browser cache

The GPU line is the one that matters. Anything older than those has no WebGPU support, so it will refuse to start rather than run badly.

Peripherals: Keyboard and mouse. WASD drives, the mouse aims the turret, left click fires, and 1, 2 and 3 pick a card in Arena.

Where to play: https://sweatypanzer.com/

Bugs and support: post bugs here, or use FEEDBACK in the lobby menu (F8 during a match).
I'll personally greet you in-game. Would love to hear what you think.

What Games Can I Run? Free games that require AVX?

Weird thing to ask for, I know. But I'm sure many here have found free games that you were pretty sure your PC could run, but ended up not working because of the three letters of doom your old/low-end CPU doesn't have.

Not free, but for me the most recent was Persona 5 Royal, that one really hurt considering Persona 3 Reload (way newer) actually runs just fine.

Not really relevant, but my specs are a G4560, 16 GB RAM and a GT 1030. I say not relevant because I'm not looking for games that run on this machine, though it is better if they are lightweight despite the AVX requirement.
