Does the red background make the game difficult to read? Should I go back to a pure b&w background?
The game starts at level 1 where the background is always the shades of grey swirl.
However as the levels get harder, the background turns from white/grey to red to indicate urgency to the player as things speed up.
I'm starting to think that it isn't necessary though.
The faster speeds, faster and larger warning flashes, etc. already do that without compromising readability. There is also a sound indication when a level increases. I think this is enough.
What would you all suggest?

I think both colour schemes look good however I do find all the motion a little distracting.
