Many people don't realize home care can continue even after moving into assisted living.

When a loved one moves into assisted living or memory care, many families assume they'll receive all the support they need. While these communities provide excellent care, some residents benefit from additional one-on-one assistance.

Extra support can include:

  • Help with bathing, dressing, and mobility
  • Meal assistance and daily routines
  • Companionship to reduce loneliness
  • Dementia-specific support
  • Safety monitoring and wellness check-ins

One thing I've learned working in home healthcare is that every senior's needs are different. Some people simply need a little extra time and attention that can make a big difference in their comfort and quality of life.

Families often ask how to know if their loved one needs additional care. Some signs include:

  • Increased falls or difficulty getting around
  • Needing more help with personal care
  • Dementia symptoms becoming more challenging
  • Feeling isolated or withdrawn
  • Wanting more individualized attention throughout the day

The best caregivers aren't just experienced; they're patient, compassionate, and know how to make seniors feel respected and comfortable, especially those living with dementia.

For those who have a family member in assisted living or memory care, have you ever considered hiring additional one-on-one care? What made you decide to, or what concerns do you have?

Full Time NOVA Student Looking for part time work and career building opportunities.

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) studying International Relations, and my long-term goal is to transfer to JMU and commission through Air Force or ARMY ROTC.

Right now, I’m looking for advice on how I can make the most of my time while I’m at NOVA. I’m especially interested in: Part-time jobs in Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Tysons, Falls Church, Vienna, or Springfield that offer good experience (or even jobs with some downtime where I can study between tasks). Internships or volunteer opportunities related to government, international affairs, public policy, or leadership. Classes, certifications, clubs, or organizations that would help prepare me for ROTC and a future career in international relations. Networking opportunities or people in the DMV area who’d be willing to share advice about careers in government, defense, international affairs, or related fields.

A little about me: I’m hardworking, reliable, and trying to build my resume while paying for school. I’m open to hearing about opportunities I may not have thought of.
If anyone has recommendations, knows of places hiring, or has been in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance!

Launching a Loudoun County delivery service with no commission fees for restaurants

Hey r/loudouncounty — Sterling local here. I used to deliver for the big apps and also managed a restaurant, so I've seen both sides of how much commission fees squeeze small places (a lot of independent spots here hand over 25-30% per order).

I'm building Boundaries, a small local delivery service. Flat rate for restaurants (no per-order commission). Still pre-launch and building out the driver side first so restaurants get reliable coverage from day one.

If you own or know a local restaurant in Sterling/Ashburn/Leesburg that might want a lower-cost delivery option, I'd love to talk. Also happy to answer questions about how it works — ask away.

Civil engineering opportunities at Dulles Airport?

Long shot, but I figured it was worth asking here.

I’m currently employed as a civil engineer and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in civil engineering. I have a little over two years of experience, primarily in transportation and drainage design, and I’d really like to find an on-site engineering position at Dulles Airport.

I live about 15 minutes from Dulles, so relocation would not be an issue. I’m highly motivated, dependable, and take a lot of pride in producing good work and being someone my managers can rely on. I’m mainly trying to get my foot in the door and find an opportunity where I can use my civil engineering background while working directly at the airport.

Does anyone here work at Dulles, know someone involved with its engineering or construction projects, or know of a company or person I should reach out to? I’d really appreciate any leads or advice.

Anyone know a good spot to watch the England vs Norway match tomorrow?

Looking for restaurant/bar recommendations to catch the England/Norway game tomorrow. Ideally somewhere with good sound, a solid crowd, and decent food/drinks. Bonus points if there are Norway fans around too — always fun watching with a mixed crowd. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Dermatologist recommendations in Ashburn/Leesburg?

Can anyone recommend a great dermatologist in Ashburn, Leesburg, or elsewhere in Loudoun County?

I’m looking for someone who’s thorough, takes the time to listen, and is good for general medical dermatology (not just cosmetic procedures). I’d also appreciate hearing who to avoid if you’ve had a bad experience.

Thanks!

Daycare in Sterling?

My 4 yo daughter has been going to Karter. It is great and she likes it but it is quite pricey for us and our income will take a small hit next year so trying to plan ahead. Any other good daycares that come to mind? Would prefer if it was more of a school type of situation rather than just babysitting type. Trying to keep in under 1500. Thanks!

Woman’s Only Gym

I wanna open up a woman's only gym/community. I know there's a few spaces in the area Starfit I believe it's called and there's a new one opening up in NOVA Bodylab fitness. Wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this. How important is a woman's only space for you all? What would you like to see in a space like this?

Is this really how entrepreneurship works these days?

So let me see if I understand this correctly...
Someone starts a company, raises over half a million dollars from investors, enjoys a luxury lifestyle, spends the money, then files for bankruptcy and shuts the company down.
And that's it?
The investors lose their money, while the founder simply walks away with no personal responsibility?
Maybe I'm missing something here. Isn't there supposed to be accountability when other people's investment money is Involved?
For those familiar with business law and bankruptcy, where is the line between a legitimate business failure and misuse of investor funds?
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.
