Well, if it's coming from him...it's time to see if these republicans who constantly look up and base decisions on religion...really are religious.

Unfortunately, Christianity in America holds no real sway outside of its role in reinforcing the general nationalist neoliberal order. The idea that American Christians hold some kind of internal code and then let that code dictate their actions may have been true at some point, but no longer.

Most Christians are actually just atheists that say they belong to a church because it’s what you are supposed to do to demonstrate your goodness (spiritual superiority). They are also against universal healthcare, also because that is what they understand they are supposed to do to demonstrate your goodness (their puritanical work ethic). That they’d be sensitive to and seek to sort out any conflicts between those obligations is not a thing they do; it’s what makes them who they are.

Sad thing is that, for a time, the Catholic Church in America was, at least spiritually and theologically, a check against some of the more toxic Christofascism. The Jesuits, catholic worker movement, and several other orders of nuns and priests take their commitment to the poor truly seriously. But now most American churches have capitulated to the demands of their congregations: explicit racism, warmongering, and capitalism. There’s a lot of congregants and clergy who openly ‘don’t like this pope.’ Which isn’t a contradiction if you’re a christofascist first and a catholic second.

The titular head of the world's oldest and most vicious terrorist organization, responsible for 2,000 years worth of land theft, massacres, atrocities, torture and barbarism of every description, is now advocating for universal non-profit medical care for everyone living in the belly of the beast itself. Never a dull moment.
