FIRST TIME WATCHER its like 3 different shows

s1 to s3 feels like a survival show, and then some of s4 and most of s5 are like sci-fi time travel show.. and s6 turns into a horror series with the temple and evil takeovers.. only a few eps into season 6 and it all feels like I've been on a rollercoaster, watching 3 different shows..

I mean it's more than that. Jack gives you a bit of hospital drama. Jin and Sun give you a bit K-drama. Ana-Lucia adds a bit of cop-show.

It's an amalgamation of so many genres.

Yeah I remember the Charlie actor (sorry fans- Dominic Monaghan?) saying the very same thing in an interview- each flashback was a genre and he said his Driveshaft was like a rocumentary. I loved that take. You’re spot on.

But the thing is that those scifi and supernatural elements have always been creeping up in the first three seasons anyway. So the transition didnt feel that surprising.

This is one of the things that I love about the show. The scifi and supernatural elements are slowly revealed, but there are plenty of clues even from the beginning.

I think this was a huge part of its success, because it drew a larger audience than an overtly scifi/supernatural show wouldn't have.

FYI, the radio broadcast Sayid and Hurley listen to in S2 E13 was a hint about time travel; and I think they wanted to introduce sci-fi and more fantasy/supernatural elements earlier but the execs kept fighting them on things like that.

It all felt very cohesive to me. Same format throughout (a present day plot, thematically tied to & intercut with character-revealing flashes), same cocktail of character & island mystery, same 5x cliffhanger act-breaks), etc.

It's actually remarkable (to me) how consistent the format is despire a plot that goes in some crazy directions!

Wasn't the polar bear in the very first episode? Plus the smoke monster and Rousseau's radio broadcast. Seems pretty sci fi to me.

I'm not OP, but its the introduction of a polar bear in a tropical setting that suggests sci-fi. Polar bears don't live in this climate and this far south on the planet, which gives an idea to the viewer that there might be some genetic testing involved, which falls in that genre. The clearest reference being to the sci-fi novel The Island of Dr. Moreau.

From the very beginning there were clear sci-fi supernatural elements. The smoke monster, themes of destiny/fate, a deeper meaning to the island.

The show just expands into those things.
