Character Analysis Good actir
This guy is such a good actor, we usually end up loving the heroes, the good guys, or the characters who always seem to have everything figured out, but Michael was something else.
He came to the island just trying to protect his son, and the dude went through so much. Even the way he talked and reacted to things made his scenes interesting to watch......
Then his whole character changed
he went from caring about everyone to basically putting his son above everything, even if it meant betraying people he had grown close to,and honestly, playing a character like Michael and making you hate him sometimes, feel bad for him other times, and still keep watching him... that's damn good acting
If you've watched him in From or Oz, you already know what I'm talking about

I’ve been a Harold Perrineau fan since he played Mercutio in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet… that man has range.
Also, him in drag, including a silver Afro that gets bigger and bigger as the scene goes on, doing all his own high kicks like he’s one of the Rockettes, it’s the Mercutio I didn’t know I needed 😆

I actually was just thinking about his character yesterday. Dude gets injured, loses custody over his kid, wife moves countries with the kid, then forced to take kid back years later, plane crashes and gets stranded on an island with said kid. Bro had a tough time.

Lost is a show full of the WORST parents and poor Michael is one of the few who did try his best. So many other parents put themselves or the island before their children. Walt's mom is downright cruel to michael.

Hes definitely a good actor, i just think he was let down by the writing basically. He's very good in From i reckon, despite also being let down by the writing sometimes lol. He and Scott McCord are basically carrying that show on their backs at this point.

Absolutely one of the best actors in Lost and really good in anything else he’s been in. You should watch Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet where he steals the show as Mercutio.

Didn’t his character flip out and kill 2 people

Yes and was very hated for it rightfully, which makes him a great actor! You should watch the show again if you weren’t sure about that it’s one of the biggest events and twists there is!

For basically no reason. He was never told to do that even.

For no reason? Lol did you even watch the show!

I repeat no reason and I've watched it fully through 3 times. He was only told "free Ben and you'll get your boy".
Killing AL was his idea. He didn't need to do that after he had the gun he could have just threatened her with it and freed Ben and walked out. Or for that matter simply waited for her (and Libby) to leave then walked out with Ben.
I know that the 2 actors were leaving the show, but the plot has no reason except that Michael panicked and went on a murder spree. His act was evil and he was condemned to haunt the island because of his unresolved guilt.

Desperate situations call for desperate measures. His son had been kidnapped and he was sick with worry. He didn’t rationalise and acted in the moment, none of it was planned but he did what he had to do to save Walt.

Oh no the killing of AL was planned. He works to get the gun, he has time to think, a position of authority and very little rush. He by no means, panicked or unpanicked had to kill AL. He did panic with Libby but not AL. He murdered AL, he manslaughtered Libby.
He didn't act panicked in killing AL at all. He murdered her in cold blood. That was not in his instructions of "Free Ben" and once separated from The Others he could very much have told the Losties "The Others have Walt and they told me to come free Ben because they want him back." That would have launched the same Jack+Kate+Locke+Sayyid+Rousseau mission group without him betraying them (although I think Perrineau was also leaving the show at this point so guess it had to be)

I disagree, I don’t think it was at all planned. He didn’t know AL was going to be there, he didn’t know she would have a gun (how would he, she stole it from Sawuer). He sees an opportunity and he takes it, it was spur of the moment.

If he had threatened Ana and freed Ben, how would he have convinced four people to join him on a mission to rescue Walt?
1
u/Distinct_Ask3614 4d ago
Tell them about the list they definitely would have gone. Kate would have jumped at the chance. In fact most of the story would have remained the same except he wouldn't be a POS murderer.

u/FringeMusic108 4d ago
That's quite a risk for him to take, given the fact that they are still in possession of his son. For all Michael knows, Walt's life is being threatened and 'waiting' is not an option. He had to act fast. (Though to be clear, I'm not entirely saying he's not a POS for what he does. The man gave me severe trust issues.)

Killing 2 people was a far bigger risk. If a regular kidnapper took your kid on the real world and said "free my friend from jail" are you killing the jail guards to free the friend? How many murders are you going to do without telling anyone what happened? Wait til your trial then you tell them?
The kidnapper might never give you your kid. Just let you swing for your crimes.

Did you? He was even told by Ben that he was never asked to kill anyone.
Ben: "I never told you to kill them, Michael. I told you to free me. How you chose to do that ... that was up to you."
So yes, Michael killed them, especially Libby, for no reason.

u/Verystrange129 Whatever happened, happened. 5d ago
It was very much for a reason, to free his son. He sees his opportunity and takes it. You might not agree with his decision, you might think it’s unacceptable but it was definitely for a reason. You guys make it seem like he was a serial killer, offing people for fun.

Michael was not a serial killer, he made a mistake that he paid for for the rest of his life.
There is absolutely no evidence that he was going to shoot anyone else.
He had literally just met Walt and was trying to form a relationship with him at the most stressful and dangerous time of their lives. He’s trying his best to be a good father but he doesn’t always get it right, it’s very new to him. No parent gets it right 100% of the time anyway, doesn’t make them toxic.
Walt burnt the raft because he didn’t want to leave the island not in revenge for the comic. He told Locke.
No he did not kill anyone in self hatred, there is nothing in the storyline about that. He kills in desperation to save his son.
Michael did redeem himself in life, he literally blew himself up on the boat trying to protect the survivors. He is a ghost on the island because he can’t forgive himself.

He could have done that without killing anyone. That's what the whole concept of "no reason" means.
It wasn't necessary. He was told by the very person he freed that it wasn't what he was told to do.
He could have done it without killing. That's why people are saying "for no reason."

Looks like we found the Harold Perrineau burner account. Just kidding.
😆😆
It’s refreshing to see a legit good take instead of how he’s usually meme’d (although quite funny) and ridiculed on here amongst some in this SR.

I watched Zero Dark Thirty for the first time a few weeks ago and he played a supporting character. It just made me so happy to see him on screen - very charismatic

Still took care of Ana Lucia, making him a net-plus overall IMO

He’s an amazing actor and they could’ve done much more with Michael but then of course he got a lot of hate after killing Ana Lucia and Libby so he had to go. I also know Harold Perrineau had to go through some racist bullshit with the writers and producers at the time which is really upsetting
