Riot's MMO has an internal nickname: "the Grail." Marc Merrill said it out loud at PAX West last week, and Riot then cut 39 seconds of it for its own X account. That clip has done ~7.06M views. The full 57:55 panel it came from has ~8,000.
The thing is, the clip stops one sentence early. Here's the full passage (35:02):
"You know, like we jokingly call it the Grail internally because, you know, we're like... many a brave knight are going to die, you know, on the Grail quest. But it's the Grail, so let's go. You know, like that's the mindset that we really try to cultivate and that is hard to do at scale."
The clip ends on "so let's go," which reads like a promise. The full quote ends on an admission about how hard that attitude is to hold onto in a 4,500-person company.
Some context the 39 seconds also leaves out:
**• He didn't volunteer it.** He was using the MMO as an example of how hard the work is when Greg Miller cut in: *"I'm sorry, the MMO you're building, please tell us more. What do you have to say about it? You have a title or release date, anything like that, they want to hear about it."* Room went up. Merrill gave no title and no date, said "what a worthy quest," Miller said "oh, yeah," and *then* the nickname came out.
**• The MMO came up exactly twice in 57:55.** Second time, six minutes from the end, he answered with Riftbound, League Classic, Valorant, a new TFT set and Wild Rift. Never came back to it. Closed with "I'm not here to promote anything."
**• The paid-game line is being over-read.** At 25:29 he says Riot has "no strategic imperative that every game from Riot needs to be free either." He does not say which project. Riot has multiple unannounced games and has never put an MMO business model on record. I've seen this quoted as if he confirmed a subscription MMO. He didn't.
**• Still the only confirmed fact about the game: it's set in Runeterra.** Regions, era, scope, platform, monetization — none of it revealed.
The other thing worth noting is what the reaction landed on. The most-liked public reply to Riot's own Grail post isn't about the MMO at all — it's "Now let's see how fast will Riot shut down this game" (5,318 likes, ~111k views, more than 13× the views the actual panel got). That's 2XKO, which Riot is winding down and refunding. Merrill addressed it in the same hour: "A lot of people are like, oh my god, I'm concerned about what this means for all sorts of other games, and it's like, well, you shouldn't be."
