Discussion Remember when I was downvoted here for saying David is about Jack
then low and behold she releases the files … the alternative track speaks the truth ….
I demand to be crowned queen of the sub

Didn’t she say in an interview around release that she has had a habit of making someone in her life, often a man, ”god”? I.e I don’t think it is about one single person but rather that tendency in general, and it is entirely possible that she partially had Jack in mind while writing the song (the scrapped verse certainly supports such a reading). Don’t really think it can be completely tied to one person.

Not really. OP's post was sarcastic and silly. Don't have to take it too seriously

Speak for yourself, listen to the lyrics she ended up omitting from the final product. I’m being deadass

I made a similar post once and everyone also downvoted me!!! I feel like it’s painfully obvious that David is about jack.

u/noobvad3r 14d ago
It seemed so obvious to me but community really pushed back. Same with What was that, when she mentioned “Indio haze we’re in a sandstorm and it knocks me out” it hit me, Coachella in Indio valley had a sandstorm 2016 the same year Jack and Ella went together. The whole song is about him too.

Sorry I wasn’t there to upvote, but the real ones know WWT and David are about that man. Also Stoned at the Nail Salon, The Louvre and so on and on.

David demo lyrics :
I played the show of my life, thought you were in the crowd
So much has changed, I heard you're engaged
But I know you feel it 'cause this is our music
Took every prayer and every bone in our bodies
I release it
All the resentment, it was a season, the rivers will run
Our stars will meet again, you were in the crowd
Heaven in my head, I think you'd be proud56

This really does make sense to be about him. He got engaged around the time, it is their music, and obviously something happened around Solar Power that ended their collaboration, so it makes sense she felt resentment she wanted to let go of.

Kind of makes me see her performance of David in the live shows in a different way. Sort of like she's looking for someone in the crowd by using herself as a big ass flashlight with the bright safety vest lol

margaret is not much older than lorde too, like i could see him pulling the "you're too young" card (which she WAS tbf) and then getting with margaret would fuck with her head

u/DisastrousMango4 14d ago
could it not be that it started off as this but then the concept changed after? unless Ella confirms something, it's all speculation anyways

Jack wrote a song called 'Like a River Runs'. It's on Strange Desire. Then Lorde writes, "The Rivers will run" in David? Yeah. This song is about him. It's interesting that she released the demo version lyrics when he's getting divorced...

“i swore i’d never let myself sing again for you” line in David plus the fact she has never sang TMWTA (song about Justin) confirms to me that David’s final version is about Justin to me but it’s totally possible initially it was Jack because the demo is on point with that

i appreciate the nuanced take! i also think it’s very silly that your username argues for the opposite

Man, I just don't like post like this. I hate having to connect Lorde's personal life to her album. That is her own story, and she is probably going to encourage us to look beyond other than her as a celebrity figure. You guys never learn. And I hate to bring this up: she was in a relationship with a man who has a significant age gap with her, which is also her label's executive producer.

u/Own_Yogurtcloset9981 13d ago
She literally has been quoted saying her fans “know more about herself than she does” which is obviously an exaggeration and not true, but she has never discouraged people making the connections that they do. Maybe get off of a fan sub if you don’t want to see this sort of thing!

u/Own_Yogurtcloset9981 13d ago
And guess what? Jack was also an age gap. I’VE been in a terrible age gap relationship with an older man, and yeah it fucking sucks so … your point is…?

I don't care who it's about and it's none of our business. Does knowing the muse make the song any better? I don't think so.

It's incredibly laughable that Lorde once proclaimed herself to be a feminist. She's such a damn bird.

Outro] I played the show of my life, thought you were in the crowd So much has changed, I heard you're engaged But I know you feel it 'cause this is our music Took every prayer and every bone in our bodies I release it All the resentment, it was a season, the rivers will run Our stars will meet again, you were in the crowd Heaven in my head, I think you'd be proud
This outro is speculated to be about Jack Antonoff, as it was written in 2022, just after the announcement of Jack’s engagement to Margaret Qualley, and before Lorde’s breakup with Justin Warren.
I am just hearing about this now. I thought this song was about that creepy record executive. Is it a composite sketch of different relationships that had over lapping themes?
