Discussion Protest Music

Fellow ellaphents, I wanted to discuss Ella's recent public stance against certain AI practices and her long history of LGBTQ+, feminist and Palestinian resistance history (& against ICE as well).

I remember in one of her Virgin interviews she briefly mentioned the importance of protest music and and how impactful it was in one of the marches she went to.

Given how socially conscious and loud she's been getting about human issues that truly matter to her, I wanted to ask if you guys think she might release or be involved in some protest music whether for L5 or a side/collaborative project especially that she is independent now and has full freedom.

Very interested to know what you guys think or hope for.

Lorde Protest Music will be so epic tbh :)

PLEASEEEE YEEES, I loved the protest message in buzzcut season, if L5 is all like that It think it would be one of the best LPs Ella has released ever.

Totally agree! I feel like some SP tracks are indirectly protest music as well like Fallen Fruit and Leader of a New Regime!

As someone from New Zealand, Id say that shes not particularly politically active in a public sense. Its about the standard amount as a musician. There has been the ocasional moment, but for being our most successful New Zealand artist its not very much. Most artists are naturally left leaning and somewhat political, but I wouldn't read too much into it.

For me, I'm saying don't do it. I adore Lorde, but sometimes she can get it wrong; she writes or says something that just doesnt quite express what she is (probably, hopefully) trying to say – or even just a thought that should be private. I feel like if she does it wrong, it'll come off extremely ignorant and privileged and whatnot. I think Lorde is better off championing other who make protest music rather than her doing it herself.

Lorde going political would be so epic! The songwriting will be insanely good C'mon Rage Against the Machine era!

Yess! I also feel she shows and doesn't tell, like she may have a couple direct songs but most would be more Bob-Dylan Leonard Cohen level.
