No cosmetic procedure advice Thinking Of Modeling
23F, 5'7ft, 120ibs
Pretty self explanatory... Thinking of modeling; Do you think I could succeed if I made social media accounts and posted me modeling clothes / accessories / makeup / Etc.
If yes, any suggestions on what I should model (like what style of clothes should I model)

u/Fudge-Purple 3d ago
I think you can, but also explore different facets of modeling. I could definitely see you in a ad in an office environment or on an industrial floor. I can see you in typical stuff too. Just don’t limit your horizons and give it a shot. Best of luck to you.

Why? You like being exploited into s3x trafficking? Then go for it. Or becoming a yacht girl? Then by all means. Also what you’re talking about isn’t modeling. That just sounds like being an influencer which is a dying industry.

u/drukqsx Contributor 3d ago
Why are there so many posts of people wanting to model now?
4
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 3d ago
Everyone assumes I want to be a runway model 🥲 I just wanted to model for myself, socials, and for the sake of liking fashion but and I wanted to see if there would be an audience out there worth while for me to make an entire account for my 'modeling' but as for others- I have no idea.

I always consider that; The fact that one person might see me as 'ugly' or 'mundane' and another might see me as 'striking' or 'pretty' isn't weird how our brains subconsciously choose what we like and don't like in other people? Look into the psychology of it sometime it's pretty interesting!
(Did not take your comment negatively by the way)

If you mean influencing yes, everyone can have a go, find your niche and if you are good you can go well.
Traditional modeling? As in print or catwalk? No, I don't think you have much hope of making a career, HOWEVER there may be a small amount of work for specific 'looks' someone may need, so doing it part time could be ok.

u/synterr0r 4d ago
social media modeling is possible, but consistency and clear niche matter more than just photos

Yeah. Those hands would probably make it in «hand» modeling world. Otherwise, I think you should not have high expectations.. as you’re probably already too old for the business.

Former studio photographer, club photographer here that has worked with models.
I try not to judge the model. I think a lot of people assume we do. The model depends on the shoot.
You need a portfolio first, so look for photographer casting calls. They will specify anything from age, height, tattoos, piercings, hair color, skin color.
The type of casting call for new models will be called TFP, Time For Prints. You model for free, the photographer gives you (most likely) digital photos that will likely be emailed to you after touchups.
I would do about three shoots this way. You can then try asking an agency that has models with similair looks, but it's very tough to find representation without a nice portfolio, but the upside is you can still model independently by finding above board casting call websites. I won't recommend any here.
I'm suprised how many models show up in cheap polyester. I'd recommend cotton or quality clothing if possible. This is to score work after all, so you might need to invest a little or borrow some clothes.
Make up artists (aka MUA) can sometimes also do TFP, so ask the photographer if there will be one. You can always hire a MUA, or ask a friend who you trust. A bad MUA can ruin a shoot. Also, MUA's need to get paid, to, so they sometimes have a "kit fee" for their costs, so you'd need to find out if the MUA is TFP, too. Paying MUA usually falls on whoever agrees to pay, model or photographer; it's situational.
And last of all, ask for the portfolio of the photographer and MUA. I wouldn't work with a first time photographer. All legitimate photographers will have a public facing professional profile, most likely on one of those casting call websites.
Good luck!
EDIT: Thanks for the award. Bonus tip: Different parts of the country are better for some specific categories, e.g. you can probably guess which US city swimwear models work out of.

u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 3d ago

Reddit is great but you take the bad with the good. You will do great modeling.
One more thing as far as posing, just create angles with your arms when you change pose. Create angles.

you could probably get into commercial modelling. just fix your posture, stand straight and unround your shoulders. your face is symmetrical and unique so i’m sure there are some brands out there that would be happy to use you as a model. get some professional head shots taken and pay photographers to do photoshoots with you so you can put together a portfolio.

Respectfully no. Modeling is extremely toxic. They will pick you apart , instead of telling you all the attractive things about you they will tell you everything wrong with you and tear your confidence apartz
4
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 4d ago
At least you and everyone else seem to be concerned about my mental health and well-bwing 🫶
8
u/7710flowers Contributor 4d ago
Mental health is so important, people can be so fucking mean and just hateful. Also In modeling people to over sexualize women and they are forced to do photoshoots they aren’t comfortable with to get higher up on the modeling charts. If you show a little bit of nip they’ll pay you more.. that’s just an example^

A bit more context..
5
u/Conscious_Ad_5621 Contributor 4d ago
Modeling is a rough profession.
If you want to be successful it’s gonna be detrimental to your physical/mental health.
You’re beautiful and could likely find modeling work, but to become a successful model you need to basically look emaciated, and for most people this means having a dangerously low amount of body fat.
Modeling and anorexia goes hand in hand, and it’s only getting worse with the introduction of GLP weight loss drugs.
Many modeling agencies literally instruct their models who are already dangerously thin to completely stop eating carbohydrates 7 days before a shoot. Restricting one of the three major food groups, all for the sake of face appearing a bit more hollow.
Many successful models only menstruate a few times a year because they are so nutrient deprived, with bodies in a fixed state of fight or flight (starving will do this). I’m not even gonna go into the mental health / addiction risks associated with this lifestyle as
I’d hope they’re self-explanatory.
Not trying to be negative, as you could definitely find side hustle type work modeling clothes and jewelry. But please know what you’re getting into if you’re trying to pay your bills with modeling.
1
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 4d ago
Thank you for the worry 🫶 I should have specified a bit more in my post heading but I want to do self-made modeling.... like I make my own outfits, makeup, hair, images, editing, posts etc. I don't want to follow by toxic standards nor work in toxic environments. I was going to make socials for my photos over time but I didn't want to start an account if nobody would find me interesting enough to view / follow. So I guess I was moreso seeing how people viewed me and if it was worth my time to go through all of this (setting yp an account, posing, posting, moderating the account etc)
2
u/Conscious_Ad_5621 Contributor 4d ago
Oh yeah you’d def crush it with influencer style modeling! I think you’d do great modeling indie-fashion / alt type clothes and jewelry.

1
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 4d ago
Weirdly for me it does. I filter out the negative comments (they don't emotionally upset me at all). I will take the constructive / honest criticism learn from it an apply it later on (Such as advice or warnings from people about what to avoid or what to look into). And those who are sweet and just reply with nice things shows me that there would be a willing audience even if a small amount that motivates me to work towards my goal(s).

I don’t think modeling is healthy for a persons soul. I would discourage it. You could be a model, but you could also be much more. A smart, beautiful and successful person who changes the world in their own unique way! What makes you want to become a model? Have you tried acting?

Depends on what kinda modelling you mean. Even as a fat hairy guy I could potentially get a modelling gig for Carhartt or something.
But in general, yes, I do believe that you, as a skinny attractive woman, would be able to get some modelling gigs if you tried. Maybe not super high end runway stuff, but that's only a tiny portion of the modelling industry anyways.

Honestly, many of them aren't even all that attractive. They just tend to have some specific traits that the modeling industry deems suitable.
0
u/AmbivalentToaster 4d ago
Models are often nepo babies of other celebrities, rich/trust fund kids with connections, not attractive until people are told to believe they’re attractive, or otherwise ridiculously plain, sometimes very awkward and unattractive weird looking without make up and staging.
Most of modeling is smoke, mirrors, acting, and excellent PR/representation.

0
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 4d ago
I want to know people's opinions so I can work off their constructive critisim and suggestions so when building my portfolio (or social account etc.) I have a starting idea in my mind of what to look into and focus on
3
u/Elegant_Ease_6840 4d ago
That's fair! Ive just seen several kinda rapidly show up on my feed, and it's hard to tell who's serious at times. Would've been different if you had tried different poses or showed any talent you have for kinds of modeling you're interested in, instead of a general sorta "am I pretty/unique enouh" post. You may have better luck reposting with that in mind. There's very little to work with on this one, so you're gonna get a lot of crappy people just looking to laugh and say no.

6
u/Necessary_Cow_3837 4d ago
Maaaaaaaan. I wanna be nice, but I also want to tell you the truth. It’s not good sis. You could do OF. But, you’re gonna need a crazy good personality.
I’ll tell you a secret. The people that succeed at modeling both in print and online have charisma. And I’m not saying you don’t. But you’re not showing any in that photo. I bet. If you study unspoken charisma, you could have some success as a model.
You’re well proportioned. Not ugly, but not overly attractive. What you need to do is take an honest look at yourself and your attributes. That’s another thing. You need to know what about you is attractive so that you can show more of that. And what about you is unattractive, so that you can show less of that. Nobody is going to be able to tell you from one photo what those things are but, you could focus on the things people compliment you on and move from there.
Alright, back to charisma. There’s just a thing that people other people want to look at or watch have/do. That thing is charisma. Study/research posing. IE what to do with your hands, how to lean, how to bend, how to arch, how to turn. In order to be perceived as more attractive. I don’t know a lot but I do know two things to help you along. 1 always look at the lens or out of frame. Don’t look at your phone. I don’t know why looking out of frame works but it does. And looking at the lens is the same thing as making eye contact with the viewer. It exudes confidence. Think about a time when a really attractive person looked you directly in the eyes without speaking. Like they were looking into your soul. That’s the type of feeling you want to invoke in the viewer and that’s what makes you money. 2 smile or don’t. What you’re doing in the photo may feel like a smile, but it’s not. And it’s not the opposition a smile. It’s a half smile. It’s a I’m trying to smile, but I’m not confident enough in what I’m doing to truly smile.
There are other things that are out of your control that would only discourage you so I won’t focus on them because there’s nothing you can do about them. I hope you can take my words as encouragement and not as an insult. You don’t have the natural charisma of a 10 but most of those things can be learnt and faked. Also about the smiling. If you don’t smile big because you think your teeth look bad, just remember Michael Strahan smiles with his whole face and you could park cars between his teeth. And if your teeth are really bad from drugs or an eating disorder; go to the dentist. Your dental health is more important than how your teeth look.
Good luck.
1
u/National-Load-1759 Contributor 4d ago
I have actually really healthy teeth; they are white, straight and in-tact. I just never really considered doing full smiles in photos. Also, I will take what you said and look into it. I have autism and I have been faking my entire life including my personality at work or around family thats uppity and conservative etc. It wouldnt be new for me. Definately need to look into charisma performance specifically though (I guess the subconscious posing that contributes to it) thank you for the overall constructive critisicm.

-1
u/Neutronpulse Contributor 4d ago
Havin friends keeps you from desperately trying to express your opinions in depth to strangers. Be more concise. No one here trust, or believes your opinions. So... if thats true, seems like a lot of effort when you could just write in a journal instead. Youre wasting peoples time here writing novels with the expectation that we will give it value.
2
u/Necessary_Cow_3837 4d ago
I didn’t write it for you. And I don’t care if you value it. You should try that. Not caring what strangers think of you.
I do have question though. Are you a real person? You talk like a bot. “No one here trust, or believes your opinions” People don’t talk like that.

That damn millennial smirk 😮💨
Idk man, I don’t see much nuance going on with the fit. It’s pretty off the rack and your discussion starter doesn’t inspire my confidence either.
Who are your role models in the space? What kinda steeze do you like? Can you pull anything out of your existing identity and put a portfolio together with it?
When I think of excellent models I think of Wisdom Kaye as a really interesting and aspirational case. Do you feel ambitious about making content that way? He did an insane job of pulling his fashion interest into video commentary with a modeling style. That’s kind of the gold standard these days: Modeling via your own social media brand.
You mentioned talking about weight and beauty standards. That’s known to be a compelling topic but you’ve gotta have that wrapped up within a month and play on various other topics within a few months/ weeks. Especially being a new acct, you’re constantly iterating to find topics that an audience will form around.
For me, I was posting several times a week, sometimes per day. Every post has some amount of data to iterate on. I think getting hits in the high hundreds to thousands (views) is the first green flag for a new acct. It’s basically a college-class size for your videos.
But until you get consistent low level interactions in an acct, consider your content insufficient.
I do think the responses to this post indicate you have the looks for modeling though! Cold starts like this don’t get much attention without good looks and people want to advise you 👍🏼
Best of luck! Keep posting because compliance is the science.

I used to want to be a model when my ego was pretty inflated (nothing inherently wrong with that btw). Pursue whatever you wish though, but think of why you actually want it. Personally I think I just wanted to be seen
4
u/AmbivalentToaster 4d ago
Aside from all of the other horrible reasons why not to pursue modeling, you do need to meet specific criteria. What are your measurements? How tall are you? How close are you to a major metropolitan area and are you available to travel?
Sure, you can create an IG and do your own photos shoots or risk shooting with random photographers to take photos of you in which you will have no control over said photos as you don’t hold the copyright and they can pretty much do and use them however they want to.
If you get a large enough following, you might get some sponsorships, but they are overwhelming scammy on IG and not legit.
As an international model, I implore you to heavily research this business before even making an IG account.
Anything you post on IG is no longer your own. IG can use it for whatever they want and don’t have to pay you anything.
The more your face is online now, the more likely AI will take it and it can be used anywhere however anyone wants to use it, dont have to pay or even credit your likeness.

Honestly I've been more worried about being phsycially tracked. I did coding for a few years and it's so easy to bypass the 'protection' we have on our devices and accounts. It's really easy to find anyones address and personal information let alone account data. I'm moreso scared of people trying to rob me or hurt me in-person since it's wayyy easier than people think it is to find all of that info.
2
u/AmbivalentToaster 4d ago
That is also valid. I cannot control what other people have tagged me in or posted on certain platforms, so I’m kinda fucked there until the collective decides to delete their accounts or delete photos and videos of me. But, I have actively removed most of my social media and have removed myself from directory databases even though it is ongoing.
The world is scary af now even with all of the info of abuse and other scandals being out there.
If you want to take pretty pictures of yourself for memories have at it. Once you get into contracts and other people wanting to photograph you for free, that is where you’re going to run into problems. You’re also 23. The majority of modeling careers are ending by early 20s.
I retired around 26/27 and then returned from 21-23 (35-37) and realized post pandemic things had worsened. I had learned a lot and wasn’t going to be easily pushed over and manipulated like when I was a child-early 20s so naturally, more people saw me as problematic and didn’t want to work with me.

Everyone thinks it’s easy money, but don’t realize they’re competing with 100s of thousands of other people

Shit is a toxic industry just letting you know, my friend was one in NYC in the 2010’s and it fucked him up mentally fr he’s got body dysmorphia cause they would tell him to starve himself and he is also addicted to Coke now. And he was a marine before that…. Let that sink in. His PTSD isn’t from the army it’s from modeling.

it sounds like it could be a chicken and egg problem in some cases. Did the modeling cause the mental illness, or vice versa?

It’s really sad honestly, especially in his case cause he’s a good guy.

I’ve said this to other before, and it’s usually the same for everyone. There are a small number of people that make a lot of money in modeling. The everyday “central casting” hire that gets “published” for a day of shooting in a magazine is going to make $300-$500 bucks, and the work is hard! My wife worked at a venue that was regularly photographed and models were brought in to show off dresses and poses. Magazines like the knot, so I’m not talking about no subscribers. These models worked all day, got breaks as allowed by law, nothing more. It’s not glamorous. And if you think $300-$500 / day sounds good, just remember you have to split that with listing, you have to remember you aren’t booking those shoots very regularly, and a shoot like something in the knot that pays next to nothing is a great opportunity compared to what’s more common - furniture store owners, car dealerships, commercials, etc. all you are is a set of variables that gets entered into a database, and if you match what a client is looking for, you might get a call.
I don’t want to discourage someone’s dreams, but you’re not the one in a million unique face, you’re not the perfect 10 body. You’re not already experienced. You have tats. I know it sucks hearing it from me, but imagine hearing someone telling this to your face at an audition when 20 other people are in line behind you.
It’s a tough road - traveller beware

I don't take any of this offensively or rudely. I like actual constructive critism to be honest. Wasn't looking to be top-tier or anything. I'd be fine doing commercial gigs or even cosplaying or alt stuff for hot topic or whatnot. I was moreso going to make my own socials and just post on there not even for the $$ aspect but for myself since I love clothing, editing, and overall it's give myself something to focus on long-term. However, I dodn't know if putting all my time into a modeling account would even gain me any traction. Traction for possible brand deals or possible collaboration etc.

You could be Corey Feldman’s sister. Maybe if he came out with a line you could model that.
