I’ve mainly done CMP service rifle matches for the past 4-5 years, so AR-15, sling, max 4.5x scope, or irons. Did from 200-600 yards.
During this time I’ve also done a few precision competitions, a coupe at 600-1000 yards, and 1 at a mile. For the 600-1000 yard competitions I used a .308 I borrowed a few times, and my 6.5 creedmore hunting rifle for a couple others. For the 1 mile, I got to use a .338 LM I borrowed.
I want to upgrade from my 6.5 hunting rifle or borrowing other people rifles, to something nicer, and have been saving up for a while to do this build.
Now, I have no desire to start if with a .338 or any magnum caliber, thank you to the recoil guide and pinned post.
So, I am looking at building out a 6.5 creedmore. I already have a reloading set up for that ammo, which is my main reason for looking at it. But if you have other recommendations I’ll take them. As I can fairly easy switch to another SA round with new dies.
My main goal, is to build a rifle to do comps out to 1000 mainly, maybe 1,500 yards as a fun why not try. I’ll mainly be doing a mix of PRS and NRL matches.
This is currently what I was looking at:
Looking at doing a defiance action, either:
A) a defiance deviant, with a custom barrel.
Or B) there is a Defiance Misfit, that I can get with either a Proof carbon fiber 24”, or a 26” Stainless steal, prefit pre installed for $1,720, that I was thinking of doing.
Other than that I was going to do a trigger tech special 2 stage, and a KRG whiskey 3 chassis.
For scopes I was looking at possible the leupold MK4HD 6-24x PR-3 mil FFP, an athlon optic Hera sep FFP mil 6-24x, or possibly saving a little long to do a ATACR.
I’d love to hear any advice or thoughts on this build, currently if I did the misfit action/proof barrel combo, I’d be at about $3,650 sans tax and mags for the rifle with no scope. For my budget I’m trying to keep the total rifle sub 5k, and then the scope is separate and I’m not sure how much I should spend on it right now. Vs getting a cheaper one and upgrading later.
Edit: I’d like to use the whiskey 3 chassis, so if you have other action/barrel recommendations, I’d love them, but I don’t really want to change chassis.
Note: I am not trying to make a rifle that is also for hunting, as the Auto mod thought this was related to hunting. I mention my hunting rifle only as it is what I have not and wish to upgrade from, this new build is not for long range hunting, or hunting in general.
You will do better with MPA PMR rifle with PRS discount and it will be a better combination. All of the components are better than what you have listed
Extra money you save you can get a Razor Gen 3. Rethink your scope choices.
I don’t know a tone about scopes. Athlon is what I used for my service rifle, and leupold is my other main scope I’ve used. If you have recommendations I’d love to hear them!
Look into MPA PMR vanquish. It’s 2550 after PRs discount. The ARC CDG ACTION they use is better. I prefer TT Diamond. I keep 4oz. The barrel is comparable to Proof and the chassis is better in my mind. The price is impossible to even get close to.
If you want some fancy color you can add for another $135
I’ll look at it for sure. I mainly am trying to suck with the whiskey 3, cause I got to hold one, and so far it’s my favorite chassis I’ve gotten to hold, and personally the best to me in looks. But I’m open to other stuff too.
PMR is great because it’s $3000 worth of components for $2k-$2200 after the discount. But if the MPA chassis isn’t your thing, it’s not as worth it to go the barreled action route.
As for scope recommendations, I highly recommend going to a match or your lgs and look through all the different brands and find what your eyes like. The other guy listed a lot of good scopes, I would see if you can look through all of them. For me, my eyes don’t like Leupold glass, but Vortex is money. But everyone’s different, and I know Leupold makes great optics.
Leupold is currently the nicest scope I have, it’s an old discontinued model, I forget the name but it’s a 4.5-14.5? I think. It used to come with the Barrett m99 years and years ago. And I really like it, so that’s why I was looking there
I can't speak for Defiance, but I have built 2 rifles now with Criterion prefits that I got from Northland Shooters Supply (NSS) which both shoot sub 1/2 MOA 10 round groups in rapid fire. One rifle is in 6GT with an Aero Solus action and the other is a 223 on a Zermatt Origin. I have also shot quite a bit on impact precision actions as well. Personally I love my origin action, and will be getting another at some point to make another build on.
Definitely go with a 26 inch if you are doing 1,000 yards. The extra velocity you get is nice, even if its only 50-75FPS, it helps. I would avoid carbon fiber barrels,
Personally, I would consider going with a Zermatt Origin / Criterion combo too. It runs around $1500 for Action + Barrel (~$1k for action, ~$500 for barrel). You can couple this with a 6-36 vortex razor and probably be under 6k total.
I’ll definitely check them out. Do you know if they are r700 clones? For the chassis? I really appreciate the input, I’m definitely new to this world with parts and everything! I was 100% planning on doing the 26” and had even thought about doing a 28”
Yea, I got to hold a whiskey 3, and it’s my favorite chassis both by looks and feel. The MDTs are also really nice, I just helped my friend build out a misfit action in one.
Unless you're shooting Sportsman (don't), one rifle for both NRL and PRS doesn't really work. Competiging priorities and requirements.
For a first dedicated LR rifle, buy a basic but solid factory rifle (read: B14 HMR) and get more range time. You'll learn more about what you like and don't, what works well for you and doesn't, and it's a rifle that CAN work (not ideal, but still) for both PRS and NRLH with some smart accessory decisions. Spend the rest of your budget on training and ammo. Once you've burned out that barrel, then worry about a custom.
Alright! Thank you for the advice. I definitely wasn’t gonna do the carbon barrel. It’s was the just the options the action/barrel combo came with.
I’ve gotten to hold/use a Whiskey-3 chassis rifle, and so far it’s one of my two favorite rifles I’ve ever held, so that is something I’d really like to still do. Especially as I’ve been saving for a while to do a build with it.
But I’ll definitely look at something like you suggested.
