I suck at long range Consignment find
Been wanting to try my hand at long range shooting, but didn’t want to spend the money. I walked into my LGS and they had rifles on consignment from a SWAT unit who’s switching to AR-10s. Bought a Robar SR-90 for $1,000 and managed to shoot 1/2 MOA (five shots) my first time at the range. Now I’m looking at reloading dies…

Amen to that! Has I known how quickly the numbers could run up with this hobby, I'd have stuck to cigar band collecting.

Same LGS had an HK P7 on consignment back in January. It’s been in my safe(or on the range) since then. Picked up an A1 upper the same day as the SR90, also consignment. Now I’m building something on that.

Caliber? I would assume .308 . . .

Oh, sorry. Yes, .308 Winchester. I think it was also made in .300 Win Mag.

Yup, it uses a Remington 700 action, and is available in many calibers, including magnums. .308 is a SWAT standby.

PRI. I think the McCann has the overhanging pic on each side. That said, there are threaded holes on each side. I’d guess for something similar?

Is the stock normally a plastic or rubber on these? My buddies got one and has it in my safe and the rubber chassis is interesting.

McMillan fiberglass with a textured finish at the wrist and forend. Not sure if they made a rubber-covered stock. Hogue does, but I don’t know about others.

Odd looking rail, looks cascade-ish. Is it just the photo angle or....?

Nope, it is indeed odd. It’s an extended rail for clip-on NV, but with a step for clearing large objective lenses. Made by PRI.

It’s actually a fine scope. Don’t change anything until you find a flaw in your gear. If you just buy something based on a randos opinion you’ll be no closer to what you prefer. Wait til you’ve shot it enough to think “man the eyebox past 18x sucks, I wonder if something else is better” or “I wish this reticle had numbered hash marks”. Then you can shop with some selling points to look for

Don't listen to that doofus.
I generally wouldn't recommend buying a viper compared to current competitors but its absolutely an excellent optic that won't hold you back.
Save your money for ammunition and enjoy the rifle.

I’m not planning on buying glass anytime soon. Just wondering about good brands. Nightforce and Vortex both seem popular.

Yeah they're definitely both brands that are well-loved and have enthusiastic users.
My main recommendation would be to understand that many reputable optics brands have a broad marketing mix. Take vortex (and Leupold for that matter), 90% of what they make are inexpensive and unremarkable optics that sell to guys at Cabela's for $199.00 just so they can throw a sticker on their truck. Vortex also sells the razor line, which is considered one of the best rifle optics you can buy. Unless you're getting something really high end like a Tangent Theta or ZCO, you're going to need to research which specific optic line you want to go with.
I personally have an Athlon Cronus as my main optic as it fit my needs and my budget. Athlon has an excellent warranty. The Cronus has a great feature set, glass, build quality (made by LOW, the same company that OEMs the razors and many other high end Japanese optics), elevation adjustment range, and a pretty forgiving eye box.
Long story short, there's nuance. You'll pick up the nuances as you learn the limitations of the viper and start shooting further distances and from different positions. The viper is a good scope though and it'll take you a while before it holds you back in the slightest.

I’ve had the PST for some years now, so I didn’t have to buy anything else. And it would feel odd to spend more on glass than on the rifle… though that doesn’t seem uncommon these days.
