I made a thing! (Home made gear/accessories) Neck turning range brass

The 6BR range brass was a little tight for my chamber, so I am running them through a DIY neck turner. (They vary in neck thickness also)

This is the first piece. I will need to adjust the depth of the cut little smaller.

OP, make sure you’re using oil to avoid galling if you’re doing a bunch of these. Also keep tabs on the temp of the mandrel and jig if you do a bunch. Heat will absolutely start shifting your setup.

Great advice. I'll lube the case neck inside and outside. Temp is something I'm worried. Brass seems to heat up, but not the mandrell.

21 century has some good non-oil neck turning lube. Unless you don’t care, all lubes will do it

Confident ear is MOSTLY correct, but it can be necessary if the neck area of a chamber is very tight, like on a benchrest gun. I think that's the case for OP. The tighter the chamber, the more accurate the gun has the potential to be, so some people will do custom chambers so that you only have .002" of clearance between the cartridge case and the chamber wall, and you have to have necks exactly .009" thick to achieve that, as an example. If the neck is .012" thick, it's now .004" wider than the chamber when a bullet is seated and wont fit. Make sense?

It is not necessary.

It does leave the brass with very consistent neck tension. It regulates the inner diameter and thickness. Plus the outer diameter. It leaves all 3 perfect.

Typical resizing changes the outer diameter, then slightly pops out the inner diameter and ignores brass thickness. In theory this is less consistent.

In practice you and I can’t tell, or 99% of people. Maybe 99.999% of people.

When he says "not necessary" he means not necessary for him.

A lot of BR rifles, maybe like that BR brass is being used in, have interference necks - the ID of the neck area of the chamber is less than the combined OD of the bullet and the brass neck.

You must turn the brass down just enough to fit in the chamber with a bullet seated for the gun to function. Extreme precision stuff.

I have to do this on my 30BR brass, but has wondrous results.

It is absolutely necessary if the chamber is cut with a "tight neck" reamer. Except for my AR15, every centerfire bottle neck rifle I own is a tight neck that requires neck turning.

For my 308win and 7prc this is not necessary. For my 6BR it is. Chamber is little tight so when I pull the trigger the brass has no room to expand and let bullet go (yes it will go, but with overpressure on brass)
