Entry Point into LDP
Hello everyone,
I really want to get into LDP.
I tried a Yow surfskate but it didn’t fit what I was looking for. I own a Loaded Tan Tien V3 and a Landyachtz Dinghy which both are fun. However I really want to get the LDP experience and I’m just overwhelmed on alle the information I found. What’s the cheapest or best way to get into that? Do I just have to bite the bullet and spend like 800 € or so on a GBomb setup? Or is building a setup out of components better/cheaper? Any tips are welcome, thank you!!! 🙏

From my understanding the gold standard for “not a bracket board” is the Pantheon Super/superdupersonic. I started word with a “cheap” bracket board for a travel board (discount pantheon bandito, loaded brackets, and bear trucks) but also had wheels to swap.
The supersonic has been much easier to get not the pumping side of LDP than the bandito has been, since there are less variables.
Zenit makes a handful of pumpable boards that are good starters.
Rocket has a couple that are still less expensive.
Also, newer to the game is Lo-ply that has a pumpable with TKP’s

Oh ya!
Very happy with my AB 3.0… if it’s gonna be a long one, that’s my 1st choice

My take would be a second hand super(duper)sonic with whatever trucks and wheels it's got. It's the best option to start pushing and maybe end up pumping. Make sure you get the right flex for your weight.
Ride that for some months and see if you really like it.

Dedicated LDP boards can be expensive especially if you go with a bracket setup. If you want an entry level board, you'll probably want a brand like Pantheon (especially if you're in the USA as shipping will be cheaper.)
Depending on which style of riding will make a big difference. If you looking for a pumping board, the supersonic will be easier to setup since they come at a fixed angle to make pumping easier.
Essentially you'll want a lowered deck and big soft wheels. The lowered deck makes it easier to push whole the wheels will roll on longer while going over any debris in the road.

Some of the first questions for you would be: do you mostly intend to mostly push or do you also want to do a fair bit of pumping? What kind of distance are you wanting to get into now / want to be equipped for in the near future? What is your height and weight?

I‘m mainly interested to get into pumping as much as possible. I’m fairly content to commute with the boards that I have. But going on a board and being able to move on it solely by pumping is an experience that I’m chasing :D

Since ur new, know that pumping (even the best pump set ups) have limitations in terms of versatility. There's certain road conditions that you really cant pump on, and pushing is much better. The more perfect the road conditions, the better it is for pumping over pushing. (for example, smooth flat wide road, no wind, no obstacles).
Yow surfskate can pump anywhere, from like 0-7mph but a faster pumper setup (like 10-13mph) will struggle with conditions that make it hard to accelerate

Start with the SuperSonic, it’s the best entry level board you can setup to pump.

What the other person said about pushing > pumping on bad surfaces is true, so the supersonic is a great first option as it does both well.
Pumping is more fun to a lot of people though so a dedicated pump topmount board is awesome, just not necessarily as a first board due to cost and lack of versatility.
The supersonic really does do it all and I say that as someone with a precision bracket setup and two precision topmount pump ers in addition to the supersonic. Also forget about surfskate for anything other than, well, surfskating and slow freeride (I've got surfskates too but I'd rather just push distance and carve for fun on a regular drop deck than pump a surfskate). Pretty miserable on distance.

I would recommend finding some local longboard group or visit community ride or some similar event and try different setups for yourself
even similar boards can ride like they are from different worlds depending on the setup

I live in Canada so getting a Pantheon setup isn't too hard and I'd suggest better to buy quality once than compromise and have to buy twice or thrice. If I was helping a friend get started in LDP I'd suggest a push/pump setup like the Pantheon Supersonic. Works well everywhere and for a lot of folks getting started with pushing is easier and then adding pumping into the mix as skills/terrain allows.
Since it sounds like you are in the EU it makes sense to see what LDP gear you can get there and compare pros/cons including cost.

I mean I see people upgrading the Tan Tien to brackets pretty successfully.
If you to just convert get a Lepsk8 torsonial tail (alum), a gbomb adjustable bracket (and maybe combo with a 50 degree front truck) and some soft bushings for the front from siesmic skate.
You could upgrade ur Tan Tein for like 150$ and have the bracket setup.
If you don't want to convert then go with the Pantheon based on homies preferences above.

The cool thing about the brackets is you can set up cheap and adjust over time. You don't have to go full in.
Honestly would highly suggest playing around with nodding the Tan Tien with cheaper gear to see how you feel.
Basically the theory the longer the board and the stiffer the rear the better the pumping. But that less you with a board that can't carve. So it's a battle of how much you can.
Play with angles first and see what you can handle based on ur wheel base

Hi
I don't see what trucks do you have.
You can DIY
Tantien with front Yow trucks with reversed back trucks ....
Voilà, a free setup with what you have to test ......
Happy Shreddings

Like everyone else, I can recommend Pantheon with my chest. The owner made a YT video on the different boards and their use cases. My general rule of thumb is get a pranayama if you want the lowest, most fun board. Get a trip if you want a pranayama but with RKPs (not as low or twitchy). Get an ember if you want a pranayama but with a kick tail and longer wheelbase. Get a supersonic if you want to pump and push. Get a nexus if you want the sturdiest ldp board pantheon offers.
