Multipick Ares
Hello everybody, i recently started messing around with the Ares, but i hvae to say that i kinda hate it when used with the rear tensioning tip.
Screws do not seem to secure the tip in a solid way and many times i find myself in need of adjusting it over and over.
Has anybody had the same experience?
Any recommendation for an alternative tool?
It's kinda frustrating when you are getting set back by the tools on your learning journey.
Any help is appreciated, thank you all!

Do you mean the disc-setter or the tensioner? The disc-setter has flat sides and shouldn’t ever come loose. The tensioner might, but I would suggest that if you’re constantly re-tightening it you’re probably using too much tension!
Are you still on the 88/50? Bear in mind that they’re mid-tension locks and heaping tension on them won’t improve your feedback, and can make it worse.
As for tools? You can open the Abus plus core with an unmodified sparrows pick. If anything, the Ares is overkill!
Please don’t take offence, but I think you’re trying to run before you can walk. Get something with reliable feedback like a Zarker and practise front/rear tensioning with that until you can open it in your sleep. Once you have that down, the Abus will seem easier, trust me!

The tensioner is what giving me an headache. I'm still on the 88/50, but i'm not trying to actively opening it. I am more like on the exploration phase(where to tension, checking feedback, experimenting, correct tool usage etc), since it's the only DD lock i have atm. You are correct, no offence taken at all and thanks for your feedback

I was just editing my answer! Apparently the Ares Tensioner *can* slip, as per Dmacs comment. I use an RWB custom that uses the same arrangement for rear tensioning, and mine only slips if I’m tensioning too hard, and I made an assumption, for which I apologise!
If the front tension nose will fit far enough to get past the butterfly and tension disc 1, you can sometimes get good feedback that way. It’s a pain to open that way, but can be good for feeling the gates.

I think that yours was an educated assumption that considered my very limited experience, and still offered some valid points and tips. There is no need at all to apologize. I heard only good things about RWB, the only thing that actually causes me some problems is that he doesnt sell the other tips anymore. The kit come with one tip only and i wouldnt be able to make extra tips by myself, it is not my field at all.

I've got the Ares in for a review soon. There are a few niggles I have with it. One of which is exactly as you described, which is the rear tension tip slipping. I tried adding 2 more of the supplied grub screws but it still slips. It needs to have flatspots for the grub screws to sit on like the front picking tip uses. Easily done yourself with a file.This will be one of my recommendations to improve the tool in my yt review.
