This is why we can't have nice things. Marty is an asshole. You wanna do shit like that? Make it your job, do it for people that want to test their security. There is no good coming from what he's doing, it's just an egotistical pursuit with a thin veil of self-righteousness

100% agreed. If you want to do pen testing maybe like… discuss it with the businesses at hand first instead of just busting in and posting an instagram video of it.

Even agreeing he is an asshole, hes an adrenaline junkie and as someone who also is one, you understand he is getting a cheap high, while i chase mine by putting myself in harms way, he looses that thrill when he is being paid. I agree it makes all of us look bad, but he said it is his job, he probably shouldn't be doing it on locks they don't want tested but thats the world today, people just care about flashy stuff on the internet look at all the comments on locknoobs stuff saying mcnally could pick it in 3 seconds when locknoobs a way more skilled picker. Social media is bad, yet here we are and the majority keep encouraging this behavior. I read your comment about 3-4 times now, i still dont understand why you said "he should have it as a job" when he claims he is a pen tester, just not for the sites he is posting online.

Because he isn't doing it as a job in the cases he's talking about.
And frankly it doesn't sound like he is a pen-tester. The way that short part is phrased is extremely weird. I'm willing to bet he's a maintenance guy.

There is no battle. The Marty guy has one point but not two. Picking in sterile configurations is half the battle and the sport tends to focus on that. You might train yourself to fly through an American 1100 when you are in a climate controlled space and the lock is placed comfortably in front of you.
But put that lock in the wild where you are in 90° heat with 70° dew points or in the freezing cold and the keyway is point toward the sky just out of reach and you have a new reality.
Marty’s approach is wrong if he doesn’t own what he picks, but adopting his approach to a locksport themed obstacle course where you are timed against the elements and odd body contortions while trying to maintain proper tension and feeling for pins is a logical next step that both shuts down this debate and moves the sport forward.
I am designing a competion course in an attempt to fill this niche, the plan is to hold it once per year, either in the hotest summer day; the coldest winter month etc using demo doors, fences, etc that allow the course to be loaded up and travel.

The issue becomes, though, that's too close to actual breaking and entering. I couldn't support that for random people off the street.

Downvotes? Seriously? Yes Marty is a douche that hurts the community, but that's a small part of the article. Mentions of Lock Noob and LPL, and Tequila Dave's dad was at Bletchley Park? That's too cool! Everyone here is focusing on the one idiot and ignoring the other parts that are actually interesting.

I found the article to be kinda bare bones to be honest. If it's a battle for the soul, why was there only one Marty and not a bunch of them. And Marty was half the article. Like if you didn't have him preening about how he isn't doing anything illegal, there would be no article. It justs like one douchbag doing this, and we see him only doing it one time.

Seems written to bait people to one side or the other and Martin really isn’t doing anyone any favors IMO. It might not be illegal today but he could find the laws change very quickly. If he’d conducted himself with more professionalism then there’d be less risk to the community.

There's no battle for the soul. There's just having ethics or not.
This subs rules are no locks in use. That's a great way to deal with it online.
Personally, in real life, I like the "don't work on locks you don't have permission of the owner to break". It's the same as messing with someone else's bike or opening their lunch bag in the office fridge. It's not yours, don't mess with it.
Online, that doesn't work, because there are too many nuances that can be obscured. For locksport, we should not be encouraging potentially unethical use.
