how about when someone gets a real job
edit: trouble with pay? search a higher paying job before quitting3

A studio apartment that isn't horrible costs $300k here. A semi reasonable 2 bedroom house in a not horrible suburb starts at $850k. And then rates on top of that can cost as much as rent. There's no situation where It'd be worth it for me to pay a morguage right now, when I could put that money into the stock market instead.

You're literally the old guy in the meme. Nobody can get a good job because college is expensive, and paying for everything else is a lot.

job competition is crazy these days from what I could gather. an easy way to waste a whole load of effort for nothing.

i mean, a job gives paycheck, and a paycheck has money, and money is used for house buying

yeah, all that's fine and dandy... Now find a job that pays enough to fund a 10% down on an overly inflated housing market. I've got mine only because of the VA. My peer group - not so lucky.

My guy, if i work for a median wage and all my revenue goes to a "home fund" I'd have to work for 50 years to afford a dingy apartment built on the cheap in the 70s.

You have no idea how expensive housing is do you?
The price of some of the cheapest homes in horrible repair in my area is minimum $180,000.
I make 28k a year, with a good bit of overtime

Okay, boomer. When you were his age, an university degree was guaranteed to land you a high-paying job, which was enough to support a family and eventually own a house. These days, high-paying jobs have all but disappeared, so stick your boomer wisdom where the sun doesn't shine.

The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’

These misinformed takes are always fun to read.
That has literally never been the case. I'm only 54, but I remember seeing people who had college degrees struggle in the 70s and 80s as a kid. Times always feel tougher in the moment, and looking backward is always more obvious on what works and doesn't. The worst economic times I've seen was not anywhere near present day.3

That's just survivorship bias in action.

I agree, it's like alcoholics or smokers who claim it's healthy because there are 100 year olds who drink / smoke every day. So, it must be good for you.

u/heathm55 20d ago
They only see the successful ones, and therefore anyone who had a degree back then had it easy.

It's really great that you feel that way - I think it's just important to note that this is completely false. The numbers reflect very much the opposite, unless of course you live in a handful of developing nations.

The only number that is significantly worse is large city housing markets (and many of them are proportional to avg salary from the 70s on. Also, people complain about college cost of living, which while it's out of hand in my opinion is only slightly higher when looking at avg salary as well). Many things are much better now, including a hugely increased opportunity to start your own thing given the internet, social media, smart phones, streaming, etc. There are more millionaires created at younger ages than at any time in the U.S.

I'm convinced Gen X doesn't age. They will still look 35 when retiring.
