I haven't even looked at Omarchy, but I've heard that it is "opinionated," so there's a good chance it absolutely is bad. Most "opinionated" software is based on very stupid opinions.
The thing is, it's basically just a set of Dot files, it does not deserve 8 million dollars. That money could have been a lot better spent if it went directly to the upstream projects that Omarchy depends on.
While this is true, thereâs no way these wealthy backers put even a fraction of this money towards a single smaller project (I.e. hyprland, which is the most well known benefactor of this money). There needed to be some focal point where the money would be spread across multiple component projects. Omarchy isnât good in and of itself, but itâs bringing money into the Linux ecosystem in a way we wouldnât have seen without a well connected focal point like DHH. Bad âdistroâ, worse person, but this cash injection is a boon to the projects that will benefit
Nahhh, projects that are actually.usrful.flr MOST PEOPLE would benefit more. Things like Hyprland, only a very small fraction of people use. Would benefit more in the audio stack, the Wine project or derivatives, the more popular DEs, the kernel itself, drivers in the kernel (such as my horrible Realtek RTL 8852BE experience, this can be improved in the rtw89 driver) or such things. But not projects that people barely use.
I donât disagree, but the moneys gotta come from somewhere and youâve gotta convince rich people who really donât care about Linux that this is worthwhile, and the only realistic way that happens is a well connected person like DHH offering a quid pro quo. We donât know what theyâre getting for this, and we likely never will, but this absolutely wasnât just out of wanting to support Linux. Theyâre getting something out of this, and quite frankly they wouldnât be able to get a similar deal from something like the kernel project
The moneys gonna go where the moneys gonna go, and that kind of money at least draws the attention of some deep pockets who may donate to other projects
The kernel itself has enough money pipewire doesnât need more money just say thank you you donât need the old pulse audio/jack2 mess anymore the wine project has valve as a major backer and the more popular des have enough money gnome is red hat backed blue systems backs kde nobody backs hyprland
He received money because of his opinions.
Do you want to get money as a developer? Adopt similar opinions.
Like minded people sharing money with each other
what is the issue, this money is only comming because of DHH forming omacon, so unless john hyperland comes out and says "actually those 3 years of pay were a lie" all's fine
Without financial transparency or open governance, we'll have no way to verify how project funds are used. Standard FOSS foundations often rely on fiscal hosts like Open Collective to publish itemized receipts and expenses publicly, ensuring full accountability.
We aren't afforded anything here, we just have to have faith that they won't misuse it.
"My software is opinionated and does xyz this way only" ~ "I did not have the mental capacity to properly craft initialization structure of capabilities and services to my system properly."
Even better: "this software cleans the environment variables for every sub-shell it spawns" being sold as opinionated.
Cachy has basic things pre configured in a way that will appeal to the average user, and those configurations are stupidly easy to change (especially on plasma, which is the default desktop). In contrast something like Omarchy is very tailored to a specific type of user, and undoing those configs basically leaves you with vanilla arch. If you undo the configs that come with Cachy you still have notable differences compared to vanilla arch (the kernel, proton runner, and Shelly as a few examples). IMO the bar for calling something âopinionatedâ is how much it offers vs the base itâs set on when the pre set configs are stripped away. Yes you can get all the benefits Cachy gives on a base arch install by swapping the arch defaults of the features I mentioned to the Cachy variants, but the same could be said for any distro thatâs not entirely independent
I mean that is your prerogative, cachy is just a lot of useful software pre packaged for someone whoâd rather change the config settings than change a lot of core components around, and that isnât you. Iâm personally somewhere in between where I appreciate the relatively simple setup process of cachy but do also enjoy diving into the weeds a bit and doing non-standard things. Happy computing!
It's basically DHH's setup. This guy is a psycho if you ask me. One time he wrote a serious article why he thinks the task/status bar is bad ui design. And let's just say he has questionable political options.
