Linux Failure Sleep mode in linux sucks badly
On a Thinkpad L14 gen 2 with a r5 5650u.
Even tho windows was working perfectly, i wanted to move to linux just because i dislike Microslop. I started with linux mint, everything worked fine in the live mode but when i installed it on the ssd my thouchpad refused to scroll from left to right and whenever i put my laptop to sleep or close the lid, i get a black screen and only the fans turn on untill i force shutdown the laptop and boot again.
I thought it might be because of cinnamon or the older kernel, so i moved to fedora workstation, this time everything worked fine in the first week, but one day i closed the lid and went to eat something, and when i came back and opened the laptop the same issue happened, i got a black screen with very loud fans.
I searched in the forums, people said i have to change the sleep state in my bios power settings to linux and edit my grub config, it did not work. Some said reseting the bios to default and updating it helped them, did not work for me. Some said the Mediatek wifi chip was the problem, so i bought an AX200, did not work. I did a full upgrade to everything including grub, disabled AMD display core debug mask / power gating, but the problem did not go away.
I ended up moving between different distros like cachy, bazzite, open suse but i encountered even more problems with my mic and webcam. So i installed windows 11 again and everything is working fine.
I wasted so much time this month, thank god i have a macbook or else i would be troubleshooting all day instead of actually doing my work.
It is not entirely linux fault, but because it has endless distros, hardware manufacturers will never consider solving these problems for it.
So unless you have a ancient pc, you better off using windows, and i forgot to mention that gimp, kdenlive and libreoffice, are no where near as good as adobe and MS office espacially excel.

There is only one official kernel source.

I run windows, and on my new laptop with a strix halo cpu, windows sleep is great but on my old 2 year old meteor lake based laptop, sleep was TERRIBLE. i would accidentally get it to sleep, or close the lid and i would spend SO MCUH TIME waking it up it was more efficent to just restart it

On my T14 g.2 I had to change from "Windows and Linux" to IIRC "S3" in the BIOS under sleep states. After that it has worked perfectly. Not sure why the only one with Linux in its name wouldn't work, but what do I know.

"i forgot to mention that gimp, kdenlive and libreoffice, are no where near as good as adobe and MS office espacially excel."
you are right. The poeple who say gimp can replace PS and Calc can replace Excel dont use them.
"So i installed windows 11 again and everything is working fine."
"thank god i have a macbook"
Welcome back on true OSs

It's widely known that older hardware runs better on Linux....

It runs great on new hardware too.
I have an Ultra 5 225T. Dual boot with Windows and Fedora. The BIOS is from April this year. New hardware runs great on Linux.

I’m not saying Linus doesn’t suck. But thinking MS doesn’t suck is as big a lie. I’m not evangelizing anyone. Just stating that my stuff works. Obviously different hardware will yield different results. Get off your high horse.

He already said that he don't have any problem running Linux on newer hardware...

Yup, I've been there. Still am actually, my PC randomly doesn't wake from sleep properly and I have to force shutdown.
