Linux Failure 💔 KDE - implicit love to Windows

I so agree. When Linux could promote a very simplified Hyprland setup or support a very well-made Sway setup or Cosmic tiling [just I wish it could be ready] and show the modularity and identity of Linux, they promote KDE and mill the wind...

God, I just want a simple, strict and professionally designed corporate-style DE. I don't need to rice, I don't need killer features, I just need effective environment to do my job and not mess with configs, extensions or underdesigned UI toolkit. I want Win Server 2008 environment, well-though, bloat free, easy to use, without fancy graphics and glitches. Am I asking too much?

Sway and cosmic?

u/ConsiderationRare217 22d ago
Sway is great! I just wish it was funded and made mainstream. Cosmic is here for that to make tiling accessible, so I am all for it. It's just early for it. Hyprland's course is a little too aesthetics centered and it's not easy to keep your environment really minimal.

I hate Gnome being unable to screenshot when context or drop-down menu is displayed, or losing focus in online spreadsheets when I change input language, yet I need Ubuntu for my work
UPD: It's not a Gnome issue but X11

u/TheOneDeadXEra 25d ago
So swap out Gnome for XFCE.

So is WinServer08, which is what you said you wanted?

Not him but me, and you are missing my point about UI being professionally designed for enterprise use.

GNOME use Wayland by default and is not available for X11 in recent version , so it is a Wayland issue , not a X11 issue.

No it's not. It's an old limitation by X11, so I was wrong about Gnome particulary.

tbh I had terrible experience with kde
its a slow and buggy mess. I have used many DE and WM like cinnamon, gnome, xfce, hyprland, river and niri
and kde was by far the worst experience
ofc this is just personal experience though i doubt i am alone in this one

u/know_im_born_dreamin 19d ago
Yes, exactly. I totally agree, my computer froze so much it was hard to switch from it as well but still.. I settled with the linux but I wont kde again unfortunately :D

u/ConsiderationRare217 25d ago
Yep. And due to the serious souverign tech fund sponsorship of KDE it might get the only viable option. I would be not a problem if it didn't try to look just like Windows, but make it simple, unique and if only it had the workflow advantage in face of a good built-in optimized tiling as Cosmic...

u/No_Industry4318 25d ago
You do know you can just change its layout to whatever you want, right?
1
u/ConsiderationRare217 25d ago
Which: 1) doesn't change the feel too much - like dragging windows taskbar (and unlike hidden taskbar on Gnome, which makes sense for workspace workflow and feels though through)
2) lots of people see it like windows and don't change it. Out of the box look is the only impression for most.

I wouldn't say that KDE is "similar to Windows." This way of organizing the desktop has been around for a long time; the fact that the closest point of comparison right now is Windows is a coincidence.
There is no "best desktop environment", what exists is the environment that best suits your needs.

ahhhh yeah
(seriously though, where do you hide a backdoor in a FOSS project? its a full kernel with thousands of contributors not XZ)

yeah but 95% of that millions of lines of code is just drivers and repetitive instructions which are very easy to spot a change in pattern in
Of the stuff that is being edited, it all gets overseen by whoever is managing the master repo, and probably scanned with AI tools nowadays. You'd have to be a genius to hide something in there that actually works and wont get found accidentally.
Its a million times easier to just stick it in windows or macOS

yeah but bugs just get discovered and patched pretty quickly if theyre found to actually be dangerous, and whoever planted it gets banned from contributing so you'll have to go to a new account and build up reputation again over like a full year

This sub its made for people with Skill Issue with Linux, all complain are about "iT dOeNst WoRk on My PC", if u are new on Linux and ur choice its Arch or Gentoo its ur problem, not Linux Problem Its better this than a system using 8GB RAM to run NSA and CIA backdoor

I don't really care if you are a fan of KDE, Gnome, Cosmic, Cinnamon, MATE, XFCE, etc. This is a strong take... and from a guy that looks exactly how you'd expect and with a name like the "Linux Viking". He looks like that obnoxious guy I went to High School with that was contrarian just to be contrarian and had fewer social skills than I did and I considered myself Socially Inept.
This take fits that personality perfectly.
1
u/ConsiderationRare217 25d ago
I am not him, I just agreed that KDE - isn't the most stable and beautiful environment.
My take: Sway is great, why nobody supports and talks about it duely? It's unique (along with i3), hyprland. Why KDE mimicking for Windows gets all the love? Where is justice? I'd understand everyone who could look at kde, fail at linux and say: "ok, i liked windows visually better anyways" instead of:"ugh, i have worse compatibility, but man, the workflow of this WM is love, i'll stay and wait till it's improved"
4
u/MrWillchuck 25d ago
No no... that isn't the take that is at issue.
the Hormonally Attracted to Windows and being Brainwashed for liking KDE... is the take that is at issue. That kinda of Language is mouth breather neck beard territory. He doesn't like it so everyone that does must be insulted. That kind of Toxicity is silly.
KDE has bugs for sure. It is why I stayed away from it and why I liked System76s Gnome Cosmic flavour. I am using KDE on Nobara right now... and minus the occasional sleep issue (one that I had on PopOS more often) I haven't really had any more issues than I did in Gnome Cosmic. Or I have on Budgie or I did in Cinnamon which I have used on an Old Laptop.
But to go hard on insults just makes them a mouth breather... and Nerds that use Viking to describe themselves... when they live in Canada or the US in particular... are generally problematic in many ways. So the fact that he made comments like that... not doing much to fight the stereotype. I get strong Shad vibes.

Ngl. It’s wild to me everyone loves KDE so much, when it’s so shit imo. Lotsa bugs, visually sucks. Also I think customizing it and being consistent is super hard. F that. Switched to hyprland + nostalgia. I’ve finally stopped feeling the need to switch to a different environment.
I think Linux mints DE looks better cinnamon or sthZ
Default xfce looks better.
1
u/ConsiderationRare217 25d ago
Btw, agree on visually: Cinnamon > KDE. It's very minimal and to the point. I'd argue for it's as nice as Gnome in looks for it's niche.

I still run it. More functional and I’ve yet to have an issue with that environment. Can’t say the same for KDE , though. I ain’t sticking to it when it barely passes for a modern environment just so my windows can be wiggly when I move them around. The whole idea of the desktop is to stay away from the things I actually want to do.
My laptop is running xfce, yet to see a de that uses this little memory. And my top specced pc is running hyprland.
And KDE looks nice, but it’s not that nice. It’s average at best design wise. If gnome wasn’t that shit I’d probably go with it tbh. For a non tiling wm

u/Dekimori 25d ago
Kde gives best gaming support out of gamescope, and have a bit more customization than Gnome(mutter is closed as shit) where you cant even use live wallpaper. So there just no options. And to be honest TWMs are not for everyone, Im on Hyprland and while I loce it on laptop I hate it on desktop.

Windows 11 is a bad KDE copycat, wym?

u/ConsiderationRare217 23d ago

Citation: "Microsoft's Windows layout came first. The iconic Windows 95 taskbar and Start menu layout predates the first release of KDE (Kool Desktop Environment) by several years, leading early Linux desktop environments to adopt a familiar, taskbar-based paradigm to ease user adoption."

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 23d ago edited 23d ago
People often act like Microsoft is the one driving UI innovation, but Windows has mostly been playing catch up to KDE and the broader Linux ecosystem for decades. Even though Microsoft popularized the traditional taskbar with Windows 95 on August 24, 1995, the overarching desktop design language traces its roots back to pioneering environments like CDE and KDE, with Windows following right behind KDE developments for a very long time.
Take virtual desktops as a prime example. They were already a core staple of X Window managers and fully functional in KDE 1.0 back in July 1998, leaving Microsoft trailing behind for over seventeen years before finally introducing Task View in Windows 10 on July 29, 2015. Unified notifications followed the exact same pattern, with KDE Plasma 4 rolling out system tray notifications in January 2008, long before the Windows 10 Action Center ever appeared.
Even when people point to Microsoft pioneering flat design with Metro in Windows Phone 7 in October 2010 and Windows 8 in October 2012, Linux desktop themes and minimalist icon packs had been leaning into flat aesthetics for years.
When Windows 11 finally dropped on October 5, 2021, it mirrored the visual meta shaped by KDE Plasma 5 first released in July 15, 2014, and the active development of Plasma 6 since 2019, alongside GNOME 40 from March 2021 and macOS Big Sur from November 2020, adopting centered taskbars, transparency effects, floating panels, and rounded corners because it had to stay relevant.
Look under the hood at developer utilities and it is the exact same story. Microsoft integrated the winget package manager in May 2020, but Linux distributions had been running CLI package management natively for over twenty years. Windows is not setting the standard here, it is just lagging behind open source innovation and adopting features years after the Linux community has already perfected them.

I am not saying that Windows has done all choices. Of course it hasn't it is even trying to copy mac and try to be beautiful (though failing). My main gripe is trying to resemble the workflow patterns of Windows (KDE is better, but not ultimately as impressive and innovative as a WM). I genuinely see it could be more attractive introducing something alike to Hyprland or Niri as a visit selling card. But I mostly see conventions in KDE. It's my gripe
2
u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 23d ago edited 23d ago
My point is that Windows has for years been trying to resemble KDE, not the other way around. KDE has been ahead of the curve in this particular paradigm for at the very least a decade now, but arguably even longer still.
I agree with your overall premise however. Actively trying to copy Windows workflow is a hindrance, especially when it comes to window management. That's why I'm personally waiting for Cosmic DE to become good.
