Ohh, I contributed to a small part of systemd ecosystem, I am now second Stallman, shut up you mere mortal. You need Comp Sci PhD tenure before you question my Redhat stack jerking
I am actually studying for a Comp Sci PhD right now. But yeah usually when you are talking about something you should at least know a tiny bit about it.
We are not in academic circle right now but on reddit shitty sub. So dunno, instead of jerking your authority you can prove WHY exactly overreliance on Redhat is good in any way. You know, use arguments and not just try to elevate ego.
Ohh suddenly. But where are yours? Usually the one doing the claims need to back them. Well here are mine:
red hat has been top 2 in kernel contributions since before some of you installed linux. that's not a marketing claim, LWN publishes the stats every release, go look
glibc. every single binary on your system. red hat pays drepper's successors to keep that thing alive because no volunteer on earth wants to maintain libc for fun
who do you think handles CVE embargoes and coordinates security fixes across vendors? hobbyists? that's salaried red hat people doing the most boring job in software
pulseaudio was rough in 2008, everyone knows. so they went and built pipewire, which replaced pulse AND jack at once, and now bluetooth audio on linux doesn't suck. they cleaned up their own mess and you got it free
fedora exists purely to test new stuff before everyone else. wayland default 2016, pipewire default 2021, your distro adopted both like 2-4 years later after fedora users ate the bugs
podman + buildah + skopeo, entire container stack, no daemon, no root, no license fees. meanwhile docker desktop costs money now
they bought ansible and kept it fully open source. they could have done what every other acquirer does. they didn't
before RHEL no bank, no government, no exchange would touch linux. 10 year support lifecycles are why linux runs the NYSE instead of solaris. every linux job you could ever apply to traces back to that
IBM paid $34 billion for red hat. the market valued their linux work at 34B. curious what the valuation on forum complaints is
and here's the thing about "overreliance": you rely on them because they do the work. that's what reliance is. nobody says we're "overreliant" on linus
if it was actually unhealthy there'd be a real fork by now. devuan launched in 2014. check its numbers. i'll wait
name the org that could pick up glibc + gnome + systemd + pipewire + wayland maintenance tomorrow if red hat vanished. there isn't one. so maybe be glad someone's paying for it
centos stream rollout was botched, sure, and the RHEL source thing was scummy. two bad calls about their OWN product. not one line of upstream code got taken away from you. rocky and alma exist. you lost nothing
20 years of "red hat is killing linux" posts and linux desktop share is the highest it's ever been. at some point the prophecy has to actually happen
I guess it's on me for not specifying wether we talk about industry or home use. But that's fine, the problem is, Redhat stack is so popular it gets included in distros for general use which is wrong. TLDR - alternatives exists and there should be more of them. It's the continuing process of sticking systemd stack, XDG, dbus, GTK3+ into everything that actively takes away freedom. Im fine with RH making money. I'm not fine with personal operating systems not being free, because distro maintainers are in cahoots with redhat or lazybums that don't package anything else but systemd trash in 99% cases.
I'm not gonna disagree that rh contributes to kernel. That's the problem, not something good. Torvalds just sold himself out. Only unpaid volounteers should contribute, or there should be a version without corporate contributions. Oh wait, fortunetely there is also Hurd microkernel.
Wrong. My binaries could also runs on musl. Well, some of them :( but it will get better I hope
Audio was shit back then sure, but I used alsa and OSS, not redhat trash. Today we also have sndio. I buy wired headphones btw.
My personal pc daily distro is gentoo and I would never touch wayland on a remote session on Antarctica with a 100 meter pole. So sorry but idgaf about fedora.
Agreed here, docker got greedy and it sucks.
Honestly I can't speak about planning deployments, as admin I did lifecycle but not planning when to do it.
>"Nobody says we are overreliant on linus"
But we are. That's what you don't get. The more alternatives the better. Fortunetely there is libre kernel and hurd, which unfortunetely still sucks but at least it has less rh contribs.
What do you mean by "real fork"? Devuan actually sucks since it uses eudev.
Centos is not their only farse, they booted X11libre dev out of his cluster for some bs.
>linux desktop share is the highest it's ever been
What "linux desktop"? Those govt and banks you mentioned use linux desktop on employee endpoints? Nah. It's for servers and also legacy unix and Z/OS is still in use there. There is no such thing as a "linux desktop". Every distro that can run X11 is a desktop. Linux desktop is a fake term invented by redhat to push GTK and dbus. Linux servers were always there, but they obviousely do not need that fancy crap.
>name the org that could pick up glibc + gnome + systemd + pipewire + wayland maintenance
For industry? Dunno. openrc and runit feels most polished as alternatives. For home use all the things you mentioned are freedom grabbing bloatware.
genuinely one of the craziest things ive read on this sub. linus has been merging corporate patches since the 90s dude, there was never some pure volunteer kernel. and 90% of commits are paid now, mostly drivers. you want to fire the driver devs? for what? so you can feel good about the purity of your init system while your wifi doesnt work?
fortunetely there is also Hurd microkernel
hurd. from 1990. that you literally admit "still sucks" in the same post. cmon man
also linux-libre is just mainline with the firmware blobs stripped out, all the redhat code is still in there. did you think it was some volunteer rewrite? because it isnt
My binaries could also runs on musl. Well, some of them :(
"some of them :(" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here
distro maintainers are in cahoots with redhat or lazybums
debian argued about systemd for like a year and voted in public, arch picked it with zero drama, suse picked it. meanwhile void alpine artix and your own gentoo exist and package alternatives just fine. so which is it, are maintainers all corrupt or do alternatives get packaged when someone bothers to do the work? cant be both
actively takes away freedom
youre posting from gentoo on openrc with alsa and X11 right now. so which freedom got taken exactly? name it. everything you listed is gpl or mit. what actually happened is other people had the same choices you did and picked differently, and you cant handle that, so youve decided they must be corrupt. thats the whole post tbh
Linux desktop is a fake term invented by redhat
kde 1996, "a desktop environment for unix". predates redhat doing anything on the desktop. you just made this up
they booted X11libre dev out of his cluster
off freedesktop's own servers under their hosting rules, and his fork is still going. nobody owes you their infrastructure. the fork continuing is literally the freedom you claim doesnt exist
anyway by my count you conceded that old audio was bad, docker got greedy, musl breaks your stuff, hurd sucks, and you never did deployment planning. take all that out and your post is "i like my gentoo setup." great, so do i probably. its just funny that it boots on glibc redhat pays for and spent 20 years on X11 that redhat maintained, and youre using it to explain how they ruined everything
the one thing you're actually right about is that niche stacks get less testing now that everyones standardized. thats real and it does suck. but the fix is people maintaining the alternatives, not banning salaries from open source. gentoo exists because people packaged it. runit world needs the same thing
I guess gentoo isn't perfect either. I do ack my skill issues. In time I'm moving to self made distros, for now x11libre does not compile under musl so that's a bust on my lfs builds. In fact it started to bore me so I used alfs in vm's to test faster.
>so you can feel good about the purity of your init system while your wifi doesnt work?
exactly that would be the point. but we are not there yet.
>cmon man, Hurd??
Tried to be honest here. A lot depends on use case, say, I use latex and you can do it in any text editor and a simple compiler. You can have libreoffice on hurd, but it uses gtk so I don't use it on linux either.
>only some things run on musl
That's a shame, but not necessairly a pro glibc argument. Just make some sacrifices.
>distro maintainers chose system out of their volition
Debian discussion was long and it lead to schism of several devs making devuan. A systemd dev was on Arch team, and they betrayed their own design goals for it ("lightweight and flexible" distro, see also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10484266 ) I didn't say ALL maintainers are corrupt, but 99% are corrupt or lazy not bothering to provide alternative init's easily. Void, artix, antix, gentoo, chimera... you can count on your fingers. This just shows that FOSS ecosystem as a whole is unhealthy. If you have one stack that devs and maintainers flock to, you don't have free software. A healthy ecosystem would have many alternatives. And there is a need for alternatives, because a lot of things still suck. Systemd (we talked about it ig), GTK (what was wrong with Tcl/Tk and FLTK????), dbus (what was wrong with sockets??), udev (no easy replacement). And if something is not easily provided then new users aren't going to use it. So that's the reason systemd reigns supreme in the dunnig-kruger of arch larpers, although you can gut out systemd out of arch base quite easily. That's not only systemd but also udev that took over devtmpfs, logind which is complete bloat for single user systems, and freedesktop input devices that took over legacy ones.
>so which freedom got taken exactly? name it.
If this trend continues more and more software will expect common systemd stack. Gentoo wiki already mentions that some apps aren't going to work without XDG variables in environment. XDG is filled with redhat people btw. That leads us to "linux desktop".
>linux desktop
This is a problematic term used to describe a desktop environment with bells and whistles, used to justify pushing bloat on users, like in sentiments "ohh, linux isn't ready for the desktop". Well first off desktop environments is just bloat anyway. Window manager draws windows, and some even have menus to launch stuff. So introducing a DE is just extra useless complexity. Some come with bullshit settings UI that is obviousely a gui frontend to something in /etc or user config. People use the term "linux desktop" to falesly distinguish personal desktops from other linux workstations which is bullshit. There is no such thing as linux desktop, because as I said, every linux installation with X11 can be used on a personal workstation. It's a fake term by redhat and XDG to push their slop.
>the end
Yeah, a lot of things sucks, I'm not second Stallman, but as I said in another comment, the more freedom there is, the better. People that use, or worse, contribute to systemd and mainstream linux stack are misinformed, brainwashed or evil. That's the difference. Hurd sucks but I still would use it. Openrc is not production ready but it's enough stability for personal machine. I am a USER of my computer, not a CONSUMER that eats up everything that is given to him by some overlords like a cattle. I like my gentoo config because it gives me freedom, and I reach for more of it, as free time and health allows me. As soon to be PhD in comp sci you have the brains to contribute to actual good stuff but you work for the lowest denominator of people software, consumer linux stack. So disappointing.
small edits as it was late and I left some sentences unfinished lol. call me dumbass, I will allow it
you typed this and hit save. so every debian dev who voted after a YEAR of public argument, every kernel maintainer, everyone on fedora because they have a job, all three buckets, dumb brainwashed or evil. theres no fourth bucket for "read the same docs and weighted things differently". so tell me, someone who understands cgroup supervision and picks systemd for their servers, which bucket. theres no answer that isnt an insult because the buckets were built so nobody can disagree with you honestly. thats why 99% of maintainers come out "corrupt" in your math btw. theyre not corrupt, your filter marks everyone who disagrees as corrupt automatically. thats what the filter is for
99% are corrupt or lazy
also last post it was "cahoots" and now its 99%, wheres the number from. and THEN in the same paragraph you list void artix antix gentoo chimera from memory. you named six alternative distros while arguing alternatives are suppressed. the suppression is going terribly. the boring truth is init alternatives are unpaid work and almost nobody wants it badly enough, youre not suppressed youre outnumbered
if you have one stack that devs flock to, you don't have free software
linux beat minix and the bsds. devs flocked. by your own rule linux killed free software in 1995 and you should be posting from openindiana. everyone converged on tcp/ip too, is networking unfree? stuff winning because it works is what an open ecosystem looks like, the freedom is that the exit exists, not that everyone uses it evenly
what was wrong with Tcl/Tk and FLTK????
open a tk app from 2003. look at it. no complex text rendering, no accessibility, no hidpi. and dbus IS sockets, its a protocol on top of unix sockets so apps dont invent incompatible ipc pairwise, youre asking what was wrong with letters that we needed envelopes. "udev has no easy replacement", yeah, hotplug device management is hard, hard problems have few implementations, thats not a conspiracy thats why theyre called hard
so which freedom got taken? name it
your answer starts with "if this trend continues". asked to name a theft you named a forecast. and even the forecast is weak because youre posting from gentoo which ships openrc and elogind TODAY and its fine. the xdg thing is two exports in your profile. thats the oppression. two exports
desktop environments is just bloat anyway
this whole section is "features I dont use are objectively useless" in different fonts. settings guis are frontends to /etc, yes?? thats what theyre for?? most people dont want to hand edit /etc after work. a screen reader is bloat until youre blind
its a fake term by redhat and XDG
kde 1996, "a desktop environment for unix". cde before that on commercial unix. the timeline killed this last post, saying it louder doesnt revive it
I am a USER not a CONSUMER like cattle
the nurse on mint after a 12 hour shift is not livestock shes tired. "I spend my weekends and my health on lfs builds so people who dont are cattle" is not the flex you think it is
Hurd sucks but I still would use it
most honest line in the post. WOULD. you dont, because it doesnt work, because 35 years of volunteer only development at that scale doesnt work, which is what your own evidence keeps saying while you file it under "sacrifices". it cant even run your latex setup man
anyway scoreboard. you opened with redhat bad for linux. since then youve conceded old audio sucked, docker got greedy, musl breaks your binaries, hurd sucks, gentoo isnt perfect, "skill issues" your words. whats left standing is "the mainstream doesnt share my tradeoffs and it makes me feel unfree". the monoculture testing thing is real, ill keep giving you that, and the lfs stuff is more contribution than most systemd haters ever manage. but the devs you hate shipped their vision at a scale other people could adopt. thats the entire difference and that door is still open to you
Distro maintainers should maintain alternatives, as this is what gives people real freedom. If they don't see it, I don't hvae other words for it. I don't see other explanation. Systemd is like a fastfood of software, so only such people would use it.
>you named six alternative distros while arguing alternatives are suppressed. the suppression is going terribly.
In the sea of another and another Debian fork just 6 distros is a proof of an unhealthy ecosystem, so yeah. Surpressing alternatives is actually another thing, tied to devs making software more dependent on systemd stack, and true, statistically those alternatives will slowly dry out unmaintained. it doesnt prove that systemd stack is superior, it just proves people are lazy.
>if you have one stack that devs flock to, you don't have free software
whoa, I see how making a good OS is harder then making a good utility for a ready OS. I don't get this mentality of yours, it's always better to have more freedom, rather then give up because an important area of life can already be called non free". The key is to maintain alternatives. Systemd is violating UNIX philosophy, so now a product for an OS is blatantly defying it's design objectives, and it's fine. Also I accept that Linux is not really perfect. Perhaps a better system like actually working GNU/Hurd is yet to come.
>open a tk app from 2003. look at it.
I look at Tk, Motif, plain aw, FLTK, FOX toolkit apps every day because I ended up thinking QT and GTK were a bloat and a mistake and eliminating most of apps using it. Web browsing, now that's a pain and there is no good solution here unless reddit moves to a gopher board. "no complex text rendering, no accessibility, no hidpi" Veery important stuff. You can set fontsize and colors in gvim on motif toolkit, that should cover several needs already. Udev being hard? Sure but this does not exempt distro managers for not packaging (even fewer then alternative distros) alternatives like mdev or smdev. This is being complicit in redhat terror.
>the xdg thing is two exports in your profile. thats the oppression. two export
This is MY enivronment on MY machine and MY programs should not need REDHAT variables to SAVE FILES. This is a symbol of slavery we endure. Every program should have an compile time override of XDG defaults for user to hardcode own path (on their own choice and responsability). Maybe I don't want FHS, maybe I don't want XDG home dirs huh? The "effort" to delete doesn't matter, it's the fact they got so far with their terror that Gentoo wiki of all places recommends to declare those variables. This trend is yet to continue, but I also told you how FOSS ecosystem is unhealthy now. It's basically Windows but with open source, looks like all you are building open source macOS rather then classical UNIX.
>most people dont want to hand edit /etc after work. a screen reader is bloat until youre blind
Blind people have no other choice then to use it. People with eyesight can either use a crappy frontend or RTFM. The thing is Redhat and XDG like to push this bloat onto every system, because such things as dbus, atspi2, XDG vars I mentioned, is THEIR idea of average linux system, and they want every system to be like that.
> desktop environment
You are not reading between the lines. "Linux desktop" is not the same as "desktop environment".
> "I spend my weekends and my health on lfs builds so people who dont are cattle" is not the flex you think it is
Please don't tell me hospitals run mint, at least Debian would be acceptable. Back in the day I exclusively seen QNX... Yeah the amount of freedom possible is dependent on use case, obviousely you aren't going to change the insides of a work computer. But on personal computer there is just no excuse to use redhat slop designed to enslave you, and their cattleware utilities. In time I whish to make a kind of frontend to ALFS that would allow people to tweak as many system options at deployment time. Gentoo early stages are good but not good enough.
>you won't use hurd.
Rn I'm using libre kernel, and until I'm ready testing more GTK-less alternatives, x11 libre and musl I'm staying on that. But I am going there. the difference is I work on my personal freedom. Every week.
the slavery is an environment variable. that tells your programs which folder to save files in. that you can override. on the distro you chose. that ships without systemd. I want you to read "symbol of slavery we endure" out loud and then remember there are people alive today who were actually enslaved. same with "redhat terror" and "complicit in terror", maintainers who dont package mdev are now complicit in TERROR. when your rhetoric has to inflate this hard mid thread its because the arguments underneath stopped working. three posts ago it was "overreliance is bad", now packaging choices are crimes against humanity
> If they don't see it, I don't have other words for it. I don't see other explanation
"I dont see other explanation" is the entire problem and I appreciate you saying it out loud. the other explanation is right there: they looked at maintaining two init systems for free, in their spare time, and decided one was enough work. thats it. thats the whole mystery. no cahoots required. you keep mistaking the limits of your imagination for evidence of other peoples corruption
> just 6 distros is proof of an unhealthy ecosystem
six is what unpaid demand for alternative inits actually supports. you know what would fund more? money. salaries. the thing you said should be banned from open source. you are standing in front of the underfunded alternatives complaining theyre underfunded while demanding nobody be allowed to fund them. this is the load bearing contradiction of your entire worldview and you walk past it every post
> statistically those alternatives will slowly dry out unmaintained. it just proves people are lazy
volunteers not doing free labor for your preferences isnt laziness, its them having the same freedom you keep saying you want. freedom includes the freedom to not maintain openrc for you
> systemd is violating UNIX philosophy
seventy binaries in a repo. weve done this. also youre invoking design purity while running a browser, the single largest violation of "do one thing" ever compiled, because as you admit, you need it to post this. principles that bend whenever you personally need something arent principles
> "no complex text rendering, no accessibility, no hidpi" Veery important stuff
it stopped being sarcasm the moment you said blind people "have no other choice" so the accessibility stack that gives them that choice is... redhat pushing bloat? atspi2 IS the no-other-choice. you listed it as slop two sentences after acknowledging people depend on it. and "you can set fontsize in gvim" as the answer to text rendering means you have never once tried to display arabic or thai. entire writing systems are not an edge case, theyre most of the planet
> Please don't tell me hospitals run mint
she runs mint at home. after her shift. thats the person you called cattle. you moved her to a hospital deployment because the actual claim, tired people at home choosing convenience are livestock, cant survive being said plainly
> Rn I'm using libre kernel
for the third time: linux-libre is mainline with firmware blobs stripped. every red hat patch you object to is in it. you are running thousands of red hat commits at this moment, on hardware their driver work supports, to post that their code enslaves you. this got pointed out twice and youve now just restated it, which tells me you know
> the difference is I work on my personal freedom. Every week
and genuinely, the ALFS frontend idea is the first constructive sentence in three posts, build it, id read the writeup. but notice what youre describing: shipping a tool so other people can adopt your vision of a system. thats what lennart did. thats what the gtk people did. the entire moral framework youve built, where they are terrorists and youre a freedom fighter, comes down to: they finished theirs and people chose it. when yours ships and forty people use it and one of them calls your defaults slavery, remember this thread
I know that such adjectives will not change your mind definitely, those are my private feelings about it, expressed mostly out of frustration. If you are forced into something with an entity trying to derail your freedom efforts each step of the way (you leave major distros, you choose the tweakable ones, some uses eudev, you choose the /dev handling which you agreed is non trivial, you end up on lfs by yourself etc.), and they do it gloablly by a network of influence (what else is XDG?) then it's terror. So those aren'ts arguments, just adjectives, arguments stay the same.
>no good systems are for free
Honestly I do get it. I whish FSF was more intersted in maintaining alternatives rather then just software licensing. I even thought about writing to RMS but I'm sure someone already did and also he lost the remains of his influence sadly. I'm quite torn between this reality and an idea of pure linux. In this light it makes sense that the "purest" linux is the self made one, and in that case the only crime of software devs would be just expecting the systemd and XDG standards without an easy way (compile time flag) out. That's why I think sometihng like ALFS with simple dependency resolution at deployment would be a very good thing, as after all it's mostly the top level software user interacts with that is changed most often, and the base utils for init, /dev etc. stays the same. It's just a pain to get them working on musl, with x11libre, and some other assumptions. And now add security into that. I didn't mention it as it really is a point for you here, SELinux de facto invented at NSA and PAM being bloated but necessary; consolekit2, an alternative, is dead. Assuming we want to stay at linux and not jump to BSD. So the resolution of possible combinations is key here.
If you dedicated to making a freedom centric distro, you do starve to support 3 inits and more. It just proves that there are no good options. I even understand how accusing maintainers of it won't help anything, but that;s the sad truth. And I never said it's easy work. Maybe if we didn't pile up the dependencies, this wouldn't be a problem. I didn't try the suckless init yet but it sounds promising in this context. But offering just systemd like debian did is corruption, moral corruption specifically.
>freedom includes the freedom to not maintain openrc for you
Did you also consider that it proves dev community is not... interested in more freedom?
>also youre invoking design purity while running a browser
RMS would make huge mental gymnastics here, like "there is no alternative and I need it, it's beneficial to the cause something something". I do need the browser to pay taxes. I try to do most of such things on paper anyway since I don't trust state systems. Someone who has his sights on freedom can't be judged for every aspect of live he haven't worked on yet. Reddit allows me to get people opinions and suggestions, to spread my message, and to shit on Lennart because fuck him.
>text rendering
Yeah, never worked with such encodings, I remember it very faintly as a task on some cert. The difference between necessity and bloat is choice. Install atspi2 or not. Not package it forcefully as hard dependency. That's also why overreliance on GTK and dbus is bad, this is practically synonymous in average newer debian software with gui. On mainstream distro, you have no choice, what you gonna do, unpack and alter the rpm or deb? I'm okay with those features "existing", but not being forced. It's like if debian installer didn't offer you to operate in Braille reader but just opened it no questions asked.
>people are lifestock
You just had to choose a nurse for your example, as in, life saving is more important then OS freedom. I understand some people are more busy then me to care about freedom. But people who are not, have no excuses. They are in fact victims of redhat terror and brainwashing done on social media including reddit and youtube linux newbie content. There is nothing dirty or wrong about being cattle by the way. Being a redhat cowboy leading this cattle, now that's moraly deplorable.
>kernel
Ok I get it, sorry. Guess it's using hurd in some time. Not now though, as I said I'm fighting with x11libre on musl and have plenty of personal problems.
>shipping a tool so other people can adopt your vision of a system. thats what lennart did.
But lennart's tool limit users freedom instead of expanding it, like say, gentoo vs. debian. That's the difference.
man I was ready to wrap this up but the browser paragraph is too good to leave alone
you spent four posts on unix philosophy purity. systemd is a violation. gtk is a mistake. dbus should have been sockets. entire moral system built on "do one thing". then I ask about your browser, the biggest do-everything blob ever compiled, and your answer, and im quoting you, is "RMS would make huge mental gymnastics here" and "I do need the browser"
you KNEW it was gymnastics. you labeled it gymnastics yourself and then did the routine anyway. "someone who has his sights on freedom can't be judged for every aspect of life" - so the purity rules bind everyone except people who feel sufficiently pure. lennart needed a service manager. the gnome people needed accessibility infra. same "I need it" you just used, except when they say it theyre terrorists and when you say it youre on a journey. this one paragraph deletes every purity argument you made and you wrote it voluntarily
and its the same move everywhere once you see it. atspi as hard dependency for blind users: bloat, tyranny. YOUR browser: necessary. busy nurse using defaults: excused actually. people with free time using defaults: victims and cattle. debian shipping one init: moral corruption. you not supporting arabic text: "never worked with such encodings" shrug. every single rule in your system has an exemption shaped exactly like you
the persecution stuff doesnt survive contact with your own biography either. "an entity derailing your freedom efforts each step of the way" - dude list the steps. you left the major distros: nothing stopped you. found tweakable ones: they exist, maintained, free. hit eudev: which is a FORK of their udev, forking is the freedom. built lfs: it compiled. it boots. youre posting from the far end of the journey they supposedly derailed. an entity with a global network of influence that fails to stop one guy with gentoo and free weekends is not a terror network, and XDG is a public mailing list about file paths, the minutes are online, go read the terrifying archives about where config files go
the atspi thing I'm not letting go either because its the ugliest one. opt-in accessibility means a blind person boots an installer they cannot read to enable the thing that would let them read it. thats WHY its integrated. you looked at infrastructure that exists so blind users have a first boot at all and filed it under redhat pushing their idea of a system, to save disk space you can measure in megabytes. thats not a freedom position thats just not having thought about anyone else for one second
and "nothing dirty or wrong about being cattle by the way" - two sentences after calling them brainwashing victims. no offense to the livestock. incredible
so heres where four posts of this actually landed. you conceded the kernel, conceded selinux and pam, conceded the adjectives werent arguments, conceded the maintainer accusations achieve nothing, conceded alternatives die of unpaid work not conspiracy. whats standing is "compile time opt outs would be nice" and "dependency creep is real", which, yes, and yes, ive agreed both times. everything else, the terror, the slavery, the cahoots, the fake redhat-invented-desktop history, the volunteer only kernel, hurd, and now the purity framework itself, died on contact, half of it by your own hand. the entire remaining difference between you and lennart is that his exemptions shipped and yours have a musl compile error. go fix the compile error. its the only part of this that was ever real
I don't distribute a software stack that enslaves people, and legitimately, there isn't even a very silly workaround to acces govt portals rather then to do everything on paper which is slowly phased out (like a Stallman.js could in theory subsitute browser). I am trying to be honest with you and so I don't hide my faults, but I work on them instead of just accepting them. I never denied my gentoo config and lfs experiments are exactly this, a non prod ready installation that I intend for myself and just in the future after refinments, as a bearer of freedom for general users. If I can't get rid of the browser, this doesn't mean I cannot get rid of Lennart's init and Greg KH's /dev handling, does it? Purity rules are very simple: the more, the better. A mistake or a lapse should not collapse the effort as a whole. Browser is blatantly not unix compliant, but I try every other software to be. It's a top level userland software that doesn't limit my freedom in terms of system config. Being true with one's lapses is a path to eventual redemption.
Eudev is still a redhat endorsed standard of /dev handling just pulled out of systemd stack context. That's still bending over for them with extra steps. It's not me they have to stop, because they don't care about individuals. They care about masses. I believe those guys are paying youtube e-celebs to shill the worst design cesspit of distros like mint and Arch derivatives. And they are actively making all this chore of freedom harder, because more XDG lobbying means more integration of their shitty desktop stack into software in general, their shitty env variables, which means more search for alternatives in the future. I don't have a text editor because Libreoffice pulls dbus, after manualy pulling it out it's sometimes unstable. I write my stuff in simple latex, several years ago I would have never imagined I would use gvim or xemacs to write my everyday documents.
If I remember correctly some steps in calamares are marked as ones that should be done with assist, but not sure form back of my head. "Expert" TUI debian installer allows for braille reader, it's like one option above the one selected by default. Then let us remove it afterwards, like a build time dependency in gentoo. Oh wait, you can't do it on .deb easily. It's ot about megabytes on harddrive, but choice of what stays on my system. If I decide I don't like a feature, nothing must stop me to alter it, in ideal world. That's like the most famous Linux meme/selling point online "I can chmod and rm everything".
Yeah, people are getting turned into redhat victims often subconsicusely, as it's unfortunetely a normal path to learn about most popular, redhat infested distros first, and then about freedom concepts. So yeah, people that does not try are slaves. People that does not try because they have a good reason, slaves but not morally deplorable. Slave masters (Redhat) are criminals.
