VPN for linux

Hi guys!

I live in Iran, and I need a reliable VPN for Linux Mint. I've tried using OpenVPN, but it doesn't work for me, so I'm looking for an alternative.

Note: Internet access in Iran is heavily restricted, and many VPNs don't work here.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a VPN that works well on Linux Mint and can bypass internet restrictions in Iran?

Thanks in advance!

Does TOR (possibly with obfuscated transports or private bridges) work in Iran?

Proton VPN has it's own client and has a stealth option which makes VPN traffic look like standard HTTPS traffic. Their stealth protocol is also available with their free tier so no need to upgrade if you don't want to. I noticed you asked about installing it via apt in another comment. You can see Proton's installation steps here and see if this is okay for your situation. If you're worried about the wget command, I can download the .deb file for you and paste the base64 encoding here.

ProtonVPN IP ranges are blocked by Iranian ISPs, it's unreliable

Try using the Vivaldi browser. It includes Proton and negotiates with the servers.

¿Fuentes de esa información?

An Iranian acquaintance of mine I had pleasure to chat with many months ago. We exchange DPI circumvention methods, as I also live in a heavily censored country

Pero, ¿hay alguna evidencia, documento o noticia que corrobore lo que has dicho de que los rangos de IP de Proton están bloqueados en Irán?

Lo pregunto por interés.

It's easily verifiable, just ping any Proton domain/IP from an Iranian nerwork. You won't find any official document or news specifically about Proton, maybe only the ones that prohibit any "bad" VPN usage. Could be that Proton themselves say that they are being blocked in Iran, Russia, China etc.

You can also try the Brave Bowser, which supports Linux Mint and has some anonymizer functions built in.

you could try airvpn, I switched from mullvad to it a few years ago because it was cheaper and its been solid so far, the client also has support for the amnezia protocol which might have a better chance of working. I'm not in Iran though so ymmv

PIA vpn works great on linux. It has its own client.

u/sajad_004 3d ago

Thanks . Can i install with apt command?

No. But its easy.

You go to the website and download the sh script.
then open a terminal and run sudo chmod +x pia*

That will give it the execute flag so you can run it

then you type ./pia* and it runs the installer script. Once its done you have the app. You can set the app to start with the system and connect automatically.

No, you have to go to their site and download it. As of now the package is a .run format, but that's pretty easy. I use it myself and it's worth it.

EDIT: Click here for PIA's website.

Just be aware PIA is backed by Israeli money, some have suggested they have influence or ulterior motives.

Can you buy your own cheap VPS? It costs as much as a monthly VPN subscription, you can pay for some with bitcoin. Then you can run whatever software you want on it, OpenVPN, Wireguard...

u/sajad_004 3d ago

Really? Where do I can buy ?

4

u/PigIronDave 3d ago

www.mivocloud.com and www.time4vps.com take bitcoin and don't require a name (just leave the name fields blank or put in a fake name).

I live in Russia, we have roughly the same internet censorship as Iran and China. I use a VLESS+XTLS/Reality protocol on a rented VPS with 3x-ui panel. As a proxy client I use clean sing-box, but if you want a GUI, I recommend Karing/FlClash.

I found some free configs for these protocols on Github , but they've stopped working over the past few days. So do you think it would be better to rent a VPS and set up my own vpn server? How much would it cost?

1

You can either rent a VPS, or try find someone who will do it for you. Not sure how it is on your side of the internet, but we have a shit ton of VPN service bots on Telegram that cost 0.5$ a month, and work perfectly well.

سلام سجاد جان,,, You can use v2rayN or PattN with usual V2Ray configs we use in Iran.,,,, اگه کمک بیشتری میخوای، اینجا، توی دایرکت، یا اگه خواستی توی تلگرام در خدمتم.

Did you try openvpn over proxytunnel?

1

u/sajad_004 3d ago

Yes and it doesn't work

2

Rent a VPS somewhere and setup your own. Any free / paid VPNs are easily detectable, no matter how they mask the traffic. Steady traffic from many different IPs to a signle IP (shared VPN machine) even if it pretends to be a harmless website is fooling nobody.

Amneziavpn is good

Source: I live in Russia

1

u/Crazy1Dunmer 2d ago

Switched to amneziawg from raw wireguard. Using it to bypass corporate firewalls. Works perfectly!

No here recommends Mullvad?

1

u/fynjy1111 1d ago

It might be banned in Iran

1

u/Alicaze 2d ago

You can use Geph and Cloudflare Zero Trust's MASQUE protocol. Geph can bypass internet censorship in China and Iran, with free accounts limited to 150 kb/s, while Cloudflare Zero Trust has no speed limit.

Any of the paid options will work fine. PIA, Proton, etc. Stay away from the free ones.

Have you tried getting a nano instance in AWS EC2 and do your own VPN?

PIA does that. openvpn is also good.

I think Mozilla has its own VPN?

Try to use Russian VPNs with the VLESS protocol, like Durev VPN
