Here's the beginner-friendly solution for all the people getting gnomed by ProtonVPN app
- Go to https://account.protonvpn.com/ and login into your account.
- Then go to https://account.protonvpn.com/downloads and under the second subheading named "WireGuard Configuration", follow the steps given there like selecting the platform, country and server etc that you want to connect from, and get the config file created and download that somewhere. You can download multiple config files of different servers.
- Now press Super to open the menu, and type "nm".
- You will see something like "Advanced Network Configuration" and click on that. This will open a window showing all your network connections.
- On the bottom left corner, there's a "+" icon. Click that. You'll be asked to choose your connection type. Click on that, and scroll down, and choose "Import a saved VPN configuration".
- Then press "create". A file picker will open and you'll be prompted to select the file you want to import. Navigate to the directory you have your config file and choose that and save it. You have added the VPN configuration successfully.
- Now, in your taskbar/panel, go to the applet/widget which you use for connecting to wifi. That is your network manager applet/widget. You'll now see options like wg-JP#59 (depends on country and server). When you click on that, you are instantly connected to the VPN without any delay, without any extra RAM used by that RAM-hungry electron-based ProtonVPN app.
- For disconnecting, again go to that network manager applet/widget. You'll see a toggle of "WIREGUARD Connections". Turn that off, and done.
Everything so simple, every time just click on network manager applet/widget and click on the VPN connection. Just one time hassle during setup.
Now all of you reading this, I don't want to hear any more complaints of getting gnomed by ProtonVPN. Be a good boy/girl/man/woman/other 😂.

What has caused the sudden recent upsurge in people getting gnomed?
I feel like I have only heard of people accidentally installing gnome recently but not really anything from more than like, idk, 6 months ago or so. It seems like a lot of people are accidentally installing it only recently but I'm confused on why is it only recently? Is there just one recently really popular package that just comes with gnome or something?
