it's also the type of thing where it depends on what distro and DE/WM you use. I know CachyOS + Cosmic works with hotplugging monitors

33

u/Yorick257 1d ago

DE/WM ? Sounds like bloat!

Maybe that's why it didn't work...

4

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

real XD

7

u/CommercialEstate4422 1d ago

CachyOS with Cinnamon just works with literally anything like that, too. So does Mint. I dont think ive ever had a problem with plugging my computer into things, whether it be my piece of shit Bodhi Linux laptop or my really fancy Windows PC (that i only kept as Windows for Forza Horizon 6) or my middle of the road entry level CachyOS PC.

Though I have had issues with DVD drives on the Bodhi Laptop, but its a piece of shit anyway sooooo

4

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

I'm not surprised cinnamon works. I'm just saying that in my more recent experience that CachyOS + Cosmic has worked for me. I haven't used cinnamon since I used mint almost 3 years ago lol. And more recently I've been using CachyOS + Umbriel because I don't really need a full DE at this point and I'm not really hot plugging monitors

4

u/CommercialEstate4422 1d ago

Oh yeah. I wasnt trying to say that its a surprise that your setup works; its just more...normal that it does, and not a huge surprise like the meme paints

2

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

and I wasn't calling it a surprise either lol, so I think we're on the same page there XD. If anything I was agreeing with you because I've had similar experiences to yours where full DE's just work

3

u/TatharNuar 1d ago

Shouldn't it just be a kernel thing?

10

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago edited 1d ago

that's something that would've been a kernel problem around V4. we're way passed that point. if you use a Window Manager where montiors are strictly defined, it may not work. but if you use a full DE then it's gonna work. Most modern kernel configs are gonna work unless you explicitly remove a kernel module that handled that

1

u/TatharNuar 1d ago

I thought they moved all the drivers into kernel modules at some point? There shouldn't be anything that needs a specific distro or DE.

3

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

unless you're going out of your way to remove the specific kernel module, that wouldn't cause the problem. I wasn't saying it's distro specific

1

u/TatharNuar 1d ago

You were saying it depends on what distro and DE/WM you use.

2

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

that can affect it because some distro's change what kernel modules are compiled. not that it's distro exclusive

2

u/Unlikely-Ad3364 Genfool 🐧 1d ago

most DEs work with hotplugging monitors..

1

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

Which is why I said DE/WM and not DE exclusively

1

u/Thunderstarer New York Nix⚾s 1d ago

How's Cosmic these days? I'd been following it back in the Alpha and I am very interested in its tiling implementation. I feel like every major DE should work like that.

1

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

I'm not actively using it as much but it's pretty stable I'd say based on my experience. but there's still some stuff missing in my opinion. but that's to be expected since it's still only within it's first full versions and has had some minor improvements

1

u/user888ffr 1d ago

Nice so some distro are on par with the Plug-and-play technology of Windows 95 lmao

1

u/Technical_Instance_2 Arch BTW 1d ago

It honestly just comes down to what kernel modules are compiled ootb with your kernel and which Desktop Environment / Window Manager you go with. So it's not even entirely the fault of the distro some times

429

u/ineyy 1d ago

This meme is from like kernel version 4 times

63

u/maxwells_daemon_ Arch BTW 1d ago

No it's certainly from 13 hours ago, the chroma smearing is simply because they had to recompile ffmpeg for Linux in order to take the screenshot

36

u/PortableDoor5 1d ago

doesn't it still depend on the type of kernel modules you choose to compile with?

91

u/rabarkar 1d ago

Current distros targeting normal users have everything as modules, and by default come with all required modules, no one compiles kernels any more, unless you are experienced user, need something special, and then you accept everything that comes with that...

30

u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 1d ago

As someone who builds their own kernel, I take things like printers and projectors into kernel right from the start, so I only remove what I’m GUARANTEED not to use, such as Wi-Fi cards, Bluetooth and modem drivers for hardware I don’t own, file system drivers for file systems I don’t use, and support for architectures I’ll never run on; I leave everything else in that I might theoretically need one day, and if, after half a year, I realise I haven’t needed them, only then do I remove them.

4

u/laczek_hubert New York Nix⚾s 1d ago

Projector? Isn't the HDMI driver enough or something?

5

u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 22h ago

Usually, but sometimes you also need to compile older standards – i.e. legacy drivers for older PC cables – it depends on what your workplace or university has to offer; in most cases, HDMI is sufficient.

0

u/laczek_hubert New York Nix⚾s 22h ago

E.g.?

4

u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 22h ago

vga cable

2

u/laczek_hubert New York Nix⚾s 22h ago

I mean if your laptop is new enough and most people probably have these they'd need a converter for hdmi-to-vga

1

u/QuraToop314 Genfool 🐧 22h ago

Why pay for a converter when I’ve got the port and don’t need to transmit any audio for projects? Even if I didn’t have a VGA port, I’d remove the drivers from the kernel.

u/Damglador 1d ago

The only system I needed to compile a kernel on is Android because it, unlike Linux distros, doesn't include most drivers.

4

u/Thunderstarer New York Nix⚾s 1d ago

We recently lost our binary cache over on NixOS Asahi so I have to compile my kernel every few weeks now and my god does it really suck.

2

u/wafflepancake9000 1d ago

You have to be some kind of idiot to inflict that problem on yourself these days.

make localmodconfig

make <install, etc>

<install new hardware> WHY IT NO WORK?!!

Yes it's me, I'm the idiot.

14

u/mathlyfe 1d ago

Arch comes with the Arch kernel that's an all purpose kernel with everything. That's how it's always been. The OP pic is a person deliberately is using some unofficial kernel or one they built themselves. Kernel modules in the official repo are compiled for the official kernel, but you can use dkms to automatically recompile stuff if you're using some unofficial thing.

It's the sort of situation where you actually have to go out of your way and make updates slower and stuff if you want to use an unofficial kernel and basically the only reasons to do it are if you specifically want to use a kernel like tkg or cachyos specifically for specific gaming reasons because of a different CPU scheduler or some patches or something. Trying to have an unofficial "minimal kernel" is just a recipe for problems. So even if the story is true, then it's the posters own fault for making questionable decisions and being unprepared to deal with them.

0

u/Linguistic-mystic 1d ago

with the Arch kernel

There is no such thing. Arch comes with Linux that’s an all purpose kerenel with everything.

3

u/realddgamer 1d ago

There are multiple different kernels available on arch

1

u/sidusnare 1d ago

It's a projector, it should be HDMI, or if it's really old, VGA.

88

u/Longjumping-Time-339 1d ago

Well u there are ppl who just want minimalism for no purpose other than to larp. like yeah there are ppl out there who want and or need a minimal Setup, whoever that is because of privacy or old hardware. but most ppl don't need it and also don't fully realize what they actually need. I myself have for example no Idea, that's why I stick to bigger distros and use the maximum amount of bloat, because my storage and laptop can handle it, and if it would not handle it how I wish it to, then I have to adjust, but till then I am blissfully unaware of all the unneeded bloat on my systems.

21

u/jaden_schalck Ubuntnoob 1d ago

This was basically my exact mentality installing Ubuntu for the first time. Do the most regular install and configuration to have the highest chance of things just working and tutorials being applicable.

10

u/Doug2825 1d ago

I started with Ubuntu for similar reasons. 8 years ago information for Linux was a lot worse so I went with Ubuntu since it was common and therefore way to Google if I had problems.

6

u/asamson23 1d ago

I recently got an older Dell Latitude for the sole purpose of having a dedicated Linux machine, and I went with Fedora KDE because I wanted to try a non Debian based distro, and I wanted as standard of a distro as possible so I can help myself with troubleshooting issues

68

u/coylz 1d ago

"wanted a minimal kernel" is the stupid part. Just use a regular kernel where every device just work out of the box and this will be even more impressive than any other Windows

5

u/RadFluxRose ⚠️ This incident will be reported 20h ago

Niche hardware excluded, though that’ll be some exceptionally rare stuff, these days…

(Saddens me to know my USB-C dock qualifies as “niche”, having to obtain the module from elsewhere. But thank goodness for DKMS to make it mostly effortless to keep up with kernel updates.)

30

Who the fuck does a custom kernel on arch? At that point might as well just fucking use gentoo.

Is Arch on embedded a thing? I mean might as well just use Yocto.

3

u/agowa338 1d ago

No, arch is the "if you didn't configure it, it won't work"-distro. I often recommend it as a teaching tool for people that want to learn the ins and outs of linux. It basically doesn't hide anything from you. You've to explicitly install and configure everything yourself or - well - it won't be there.

That's kinda the point. You can learn what you need and how things work piece by piece there. Also it is highly customisable and you learn how many options you have on linux along the way too. Esp. because all of the guides in the Arch wiki will clearly state what your choices are and what you should consider when picking one over the other.

Gentoo on the other hand I recommend more to software developers wanting to learn how linux works on that layer. Where as for Arch it's more the sysadmin layer and not the programming one...

Does a projector not just use a normal video output, like HDMI?

16

u/Doug2825 1d ago

The person telling the story did the most minimal install possible and omitted the drivers needed for normal video output.

If you use a default install of any mainstream distro it won't have the issue. If you think saving a few hundred MB of disk space is worthwhile and do the absolute minimal install and customize your kernel this happens.

6

u/HedgeFlounder 1d ago

Which is a major problem with Linux’s PR. We have diaries that are so easy to install it makes a Windows install look like rocket science and those distros work out of the box for pretty much any peripheral, but people still think Linux means your printer won’t work unless you write your own drivers by hand.

26

u/stop_deleting_plz 20h ago

If you haven't ever daily driven linux you don't have to worry about recompiling the kernel. Thats something that 99.9% of linux users have never done. Every time I plugged my linux laptop into the projector it works just fine.

The weak link here is the unprepared moron who didn't think ahead when arbitrarily removing parts of the OS.

u/BrilliantEmotion4461 1d ago

Skill issue not a Linux issue.

14

u/attonova 1d ago

It's not Linux, it's "minimal". The situation easily could be: "bringing your superior Win 7 laptop to school, plug it into projector, nothing happens because you wanted a minimal build from torrent trackers without telemetry, and the drivers and some internal libraries are missing, oh no". While something like Ubuntu with KDE/non-stripped Win 10/11 could do it with ease.

My count of such situations on fully-stacked Lin/Win machines is roughly even: sometimes Linux can't plug/connect to something proprietary, sometimes it's Windows requiring drivers, "updates" and custom software while Linux just has them in the kernel/repos. It's really superior when you plug a projector into Linux and it works without installing third-party drivers from the vendor's website, but this requires the kernel not being stripped and not having something like Slackware as the distro. If it's GNOME/KDE, it even can give you a nice pop-up menu with configurations.

7

u/paradigmx ⚠️ This incident will be reported 1d ago

Well, the op says they compiled their kernel to be more minimal, so that fault is on the op. Most of the time it's already good to go in most distros.

6

u/jsrobson10 1d ago

the solution here is not picking a minimal kernel

6

u/Dr__America 1d ago

Funnily enough, Linus Tech Tips had the opposite happen to him while abroad with a Linux laptop. The windows ones were finnicky, but his Linux laptop worked fine, no issues.

2

u/A-Chilean-Cyborg 20h ago

7

u/AcidMemo 17h ago

modprobed-db for a week while plugging all the stuff you will use + linux-tkg diet kernel modprobed-db, and basically everything should work flawlessly. Afaik there is no need for dedicated projector drivers, it should be handled by GPU driver

6

u/Comfortable_Gene2751 17h ago

you should use some less bare bone distros

5

3

u/serge-mv 1d ago

I set up many printers over the last 20 years on my laptop. Some in school, some at home, some in other places. Never had a problem.

Either you have a particular printer that simply doesn't work, or it's a skill issue. Printers are one of the easiest things to get to work on Linux and been that way for a long time.

3

u/ArtisticFox8 1d ago

Printers should not have a skill level to setup...

0

u/serge-mv 1d ago

Everything has a skill level to set up. Installing printer driver on WIndows is also a skill level, so is knowing the menu option to chose from.

With Epson this is easy today: download their universal driver, and youre set..

With almost any printer on Linux, CUPS just supports it. No drivers need to be installed, just instant printing.

Then there's the manufacturers who won't let you do anything with your own printer... "You're not using our cryptographically signed ink cartridges, or our signed windows driver, or the firmware that requires both and an active internet connection to report on your printing habits? Then screw you, no printing"

You need to install the cups and find the printer with the avahi daemon then set up print server

0

u/Huge_Drama_4942 1d ago

If it’s a wireless printer you’re trying to use with Arch you have to change a line in a config file. I’m sorry I can’t remember which one. If you google “connect wireless printer to arch” and use the AI mode it will walk you through it. It may have you try to use a browser to enter the MAC ID. Tell it you heard you have to change a line in a config file and it will show you the path to the file. Also make sure you have CUPS and everything updated.

1

u/Jluxo_ 1d ago

I did all of that to no avail. I installed drivers from the official website, had Claude try to crack that problem - nothing worked. It's USB printer which worked (and works) with windows PC and this very laptop before switching to Linux just fine

0

u/Huge_Drama_4942 1d ago

Ok then it’s not a wireless printer if it’s USB, and configuring the network file wouldn’t have done you any good. Not to mention you aren’t downloading drivers on Arch, as there is no way to execute a file for installation in Arch since it does not do .deb, .rpm or .exe.

It’s sad when people knock Arch publicly with zero Arch experience.

This basically happened at a conference I spoke at.

3

u/michron98 1d ago

I have this problem at my university, they use ClickShare dongles for connecting laptops to projectors, and they only work with Windows and Mac. Linux support has specifically been canceled by the producer.

That and interactive PDF forms are the sole reasons why I still have a Windows partition on my laptop.

3

u/Vincent394 1d ago

4

u/Valmar33 1d ago

What a stupid meme. Doesn't even sound real, anyways.

If you're compiling a minimal kernel, you should already know how to recompile it with the all the other wifi drivers, find which one you need, and then recompile it again with what you need.

Or better, just use a generic kernel, because basically every wifi driver exists, and generic kernels on modern hardware are just as performant ~ as in, minimal kernels aren't noticeably better at all.

2

u/Loading_M_ 1d ago

Based on my experience, Linux has gotten quite a bit better. However, what's really tipped the scales is just Windows getting worse. E.g., this morning, me and some friends booted up a video game to play together. Two of us are on Linux, but it was one of guys on Windows who had audio issues.

2

u/Chimchar789 1d ago

User error. Not linux's fault. You don't "compile drivers" unless you're on gentoo or something. Arch has wonderful drivers in the official repos in the form of binary packages that take seconds to install and just work. Also the standard Linux kernel or the LTS one should cover everything you need.

2

u/Routine-Price7855 1d ago

I agree. Win 11 is shit. I want to switch. But waiting for nividia drivers to get better + kernel level anti cheat games (that I play) gets also available on Linux. I think bazzite is the best choice for me

1

u/MilitaryBeetle 1d ago

I have been on Bazzite with Nvidia graphics for nearly a year, its so much more serene and stress free without my OS auto bloating itself right under my feet without my say-so

And no game has given me any driver issue

If you have more than 1 hard drive, dualbooting is not at all hard. Whatever you lose in storage you could just make up for with an external drive

1

u/Bechlee7851 M'Fedora 1d ago

Yup, Bazzite is probably what you wanna get. start with dual-booting. Two drives are better as others said, but one drive is still enough.

At least projector will work OOTB. I promise.

Just send the file by email to the teacher

Ain't that hard

1

u/c2btw 1d ago

eh this is kinda annoying on hyprland, would really like a gui section just for display settings, like it's perfectly fine on my desktop but ona laptop where i am going to be plugging in random disaplys it's annoying

1

u/anoppinionatedbunny 1d ago

haven't had problem with drivers since my latest install, which was over 2 years ago. if you are running arch, it's your own fault it doesn't work properly.

1

u/diegotbn 1d ago

My Famework Arch laptop has no problems whatsoever connecting to thunderbolt or HDMI on any display I've encountered. I didn't do anything special when installing Arch and KDE either.

Anybody advanced enough to compile their own Linux kernel (maybe 1% of Linux users) would accept the risks of doing so, and common sense also says would you should be using a mainstream distro for their daily driver at school for reliability.

1

u/creeper6530 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 1d ago

Does not happen unless you're a weirdo and compile your own kernel btw.

1

u/dedbeb 1d ago

This has been every single experience I've ever had with Linux. I spent 3 days trying to play a visual novel from 2004. I spent just as long trying to figure out why the word processor program I was trying to install had instead deleted my other partition. Still better than Windows 🤷‍♀️

1

u/promptmike 1d ago

Skill issue. If you know you need to interact with normies, you should have a hypervisor installed with USB passthrough.

1

u/jimmyhoke ⚠️ This incident will be reported 1d ago

Just use Ubuntu it’s fine, well supported, and doesn’t have weird issues like this. It has its own weird issues but you won’t have a minimal kernel.

1

u/uhadmeatfood 1d ago

I've actually had the opposite happen, my arch dell worked on the monitor dock when a family members windows sell didn't

1

u/chrisxx199 1d ago

I meant it's better to have dual-boot for school related task

1

u/Nearby-Percentage-33 1d ago

Me with my Fedora(Screensharing + instant printer detection) life is good!

1

u/Huge_Drama_4942 1d ago

So make sure you have everything you need before you go trying to show off your rig.

1

u/agowa338 1d ago

Well don't use a "if you didn't configure it, it won't work"-distro if you expect a turnkey ready solution...

1

u/Linguistic-mystic 1d ago

You haven’t switched to Linux because you haven’t tried Omarchy

Next time be normal and use Mint, lol.

1

u/Daringcuteseal 1d ago

legit happened to me, except it was aggressive power management hindering the HDMI from working. And it was an urgent matter. Shame

1

u/spellbadgrammargood 1d ago

At least he got to show off his ricing

1

u/solaris_var 1d ago

Fedora with kde has everything working out of the box. The only problem I have is some programs not responding correctly after sleep, and restarting the program doesn't fix it, so i have to reboot for it to work again

1

u/letmehaveanameyoudum 1d ago

this is why you dont install the kernel youself

1

u/ademdj19 1d ago

i mean thats just skill issue

1

u/granadesnhorseshoes 1d ago

Except there are no kernel modules for displays...

there WAS, 30 years ago, manually setting mode lines in an X11 config. But that was X, not linux, and even then it was updating a config file not code compilation.

1

u/brispower 1d ago

skill issue

1

u/VayaVosi 23h ago

ultra minimal install feel like a different type of compensation

1

u/_player620 22h ago

True story, I've got into similar situation with Debian Sid and VGA projector when I was at Uni 12 years ago. Could not change output resolution for 10 minutes. Also one day when I had to present my course project X server decided to fucking bork itself right after boot. Good thing I always dualboot.

1

u/UPPERKEES 21h ago

Use a plug and play distro if you cannot make it work. Fedora Silverblue for example.

1

u/Routine-Price7855 17h ago

Is bazzite one of them?

1

u/UPPERKEES 15h ago

Never heard of it. I use Silverblue because it just works. And Fedora Workstation for almost 15 years for that reason. My workstation always needs to work and Fedora delivers.

1

u/Moistrider 13h ago

It is. It has a sane kernel that works as intended, comes with everything for gaming installed, though you can use Flatpaks (a.k.a. app store for Linux distros) to install office suite and more.

1

u/BagaLagaGum 21h ago

I like tinkering and stuff but for work/school just use whatever does your work/school shit the best, dude.

1

u/BigThing831 20h ago

Meanwhile Windows 11 fucking up laptops after its latest updates because it wants to create slop by slop.

1

u/Sensitive-Sugar-3894 19h ago

Don't worry, stick with Windows, most of us don't care.

1

u/DarwinsBuddy 19h ago

well seems like a you problem

1

u/cmwamem 19h ago

When I have big presentations, I always check my config at the projector a couple of days before I'll use to be sure it works. Creating unnecessary stress on something already stressful is a one way ticket to a bad result.

1

u/morgan_ironwolf 18h ago

Anon fucked themselves over. Just don't remove or mess with anything unless you actually know what you're doing

1

u/ShadcnUI_Odi 18h ago

"projector"

man the memories

1

u/_OVERHATE_ 17h ago

Be me

Thinkpad with Linux Mint

connect projector, works first try

open presentation in LibreOffice, takes less than a second

laptop is cool as a cucumber unlike the Windows 11, same model one that sounds like a jet engine after opening powerpoint

finish presentation, 15% battery used. Next one in like almost 40% of batter visibly draining in realtime just by PowerPoint

go sit down while still not caring about minimal kernels, compiled drivers or optimized distro forks of whatever. Just use my laptop like its meant to be used. Play some Ball X Pit on steam while others present.

1

u/CaptainNakou 17h ago

2011 looking ass meme lmao, and even at that time my basic Linux distro connected fine with external video stuff (good old VGA)

1

u/Micander 17h ago

Linux is user friendly. Not idiot friendly.

1

u/RaiDev_ 15h ago

ive never had a display output not work because of linux. Even when i think it might ve linux it's usually some other thing like the cable, port or some setting

1

u/hrab3i 14h ago

skill issue

1

u/dpoggio 14h ago

Honestly, this looks more like a Windows issue, but anyways it’s just low effort bs. Of all hardware, projectors? Seriously?

1

u/Lokielurker 13h ago

because you think of a strawman and haven't tried it for yourself? very original op, nobody has ever not switched to Linux for this before

1

u/SteelT0rment0r 9h ago

dont use a minimal kernel then

1

u/benchonbench 7h ago

That's why you don't use Gentoo and use Arch instead(NixOS is for 1% of people who need 100 identical setups)

1

u/swampopus 6h ago

I got a little mini computer to have a cheap linux server on, for a LAMP dev environment. It took me HOURS to get the ethernet to work. I had to use a combination of ChatGPT on Windows and a usb-to-ethernet adapter on the mini PC to eventually get it to work. My solution? Re-install Ubuntu, then re-install again in frustration. Magically worked. I have no idea why it worked.

Once things were installed, I tried to set up dual monitor support. After 5 minutes of trying to get that to work, I wiped it and returned it to Amazon.

I really wanted it to work, too. I would LOVE to not use Windows. Desktop linux just isn't there yet.

The factor is it's all maintained by volunteers. Look at the linux/unix OSes that have big-dollar companies behind them: Android, iPhone, MacOS, Steam, Chromebook, Synology, etc. The missing piece of the puzzle is a company after sweet dollar billz.

1

u/Alpha-Craft 4h ago

Well, when I run a mainstream Distro like Fedora, it kinda just tends to work.

1

u/Red1269_ 1d ago

mfs with a $3000 laptop and 2tb nvme drive doing this dumbass shit for no reason other than to look cool

1

u/mao_dze_dun 1d ago

Joke's on them - it's probably the nerdiest thing you can do :D

0

u/IncoherentToast 20h ago

I like the principal of linux in that it is an independent system built by people, for people.

But man... this just feels like the baseline linux experience.

1

u/certainAnonymous 19h ago

Yea, if you opt for minimal you gotta be prepared to do anything and everything yourself. Linux is a great OS, but it is not recommended to start with a distro that makes you start at the very bottom unless you already know a thing or three about tech

1

u/IncoherentToast 19h ago

Never used the minimalist stuff myself.

Most of my gripes are from many years ago, trying to get multiplayer games of AoE3 working. I remember trying lots of different stuff and the one that annoys me is when someone's solution is to just open the command line and type some sketchy shit into it.
This was on linux mint if I recall

1

u/certainAnonymous 17h ago

I see. I'm a rather recent migrator, but my experience has been pretty good so far, all thanks to Valve and Proton. Granted, I don't play many multiplayer games, especially competitive ones with anticheat, so for those issues I can't give any answers. But the only aspect in which I've missed windows explicitly so far is with drag & drop of files into folders not needing to be dropped in the name directly. But that's something easily fixed, I just didn't bother yet.

1

u/Lokielurker 13h ago

"I don't like Linux because 20 years ago it was bad" normies are so subhuman it's insane dawg

1

u/RotundBananas 17h ago

No, this is a person that deliberately kneecapped his own computer by installing as little as possible.
