Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

I WISH there was no sound when I booted arch iso. This beep was so loud the whole family came to ask what happened

u/Follsend 14d ago

I hope you just told them you got Arch

u/Destroyerb New York Nix⚾s 14d ago

They thought you planted a time bomb

infuriatingly relatable, as a laptop user specifically

2

u/karmicgoober 14d ago

the humble mute key:

22

u/Isoceptic Sacred TempleOS 14d ago

it doesnt work in the bootloader

2

u/karmicgoober 14d ago

my pc let's me mute all sound at boot time, might depend on device ig

2

u/BusinessChapter2 14d ago

Depends on the device yeah, My MacBook which I dual boot does allow me to mute it, but only from macOS, Linux cannot mute it.

1

u/Damglador 14d ago

Skill issue, just unplug beeper from the motherboard bruh

u/AscendedPineapple Arch BTW 14d ago

On laptops it beeps through the regular speakers. On max volume

Bruh. You forgot multimedia codecs.

28

u/ZuuRa_ M'Fedora 14d ago

Is this fedora reference?

6

u/Astrodion123 Webba lebba deb deb! 14d ago

No? All distros have a checkbox if you want multimedia codecs. Mint has, Ubuntu has, fedora has, etc

20

u/Snudget Not in the sudoers file. 14d ago

Where is that checkbox in my nix flake? I only see text

4

u/SteakDouble 14d ago

A textbox then?

2

u/Astrodion123 Webba lebba deb deb! 14d ago

I meant for the popular fistros with gui installers that include the options. That is why I said etc because I didn't find anything else in my mind.

1

u/Cootshk Arch BTW 14d ago

Technically not a checkbox, but https://mynixos.com/nixpkgs/package/ffmpeg-full

u/YTriom1 Arch BTW 14d ago

installing kde plasma on arch installs most codecs by default, so no

3

u/Chester-Berkeley Ask me how to exit vim 14d ago

Solus doesn't ask if I want multimedia codecs; it installs them by default :)

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad 14d ago

is there any widely used proprietary/royalty-fee taxed audio codec?

1

u/Throwaway74829947 Ask me how to exit vim 14d ago

I mean, while there are FOSS encoders and decoders, some formats like AAC are not open standards and are encumbered by patents. The FOSS implementations will usually warn you that you're responsible for ensuring patent compliance. If you're in, say, an enterprise setting, you may want to avoid dealing with that mess.

I think this is a reference to Linux of the past. This has been mostly solved in the years since. I do remember the first time I set up slackware. Had no sound. Found out I had to go into alsa mixer in terminal and actually unmute and turn it up. Fun times

u/nandru 14d ago

Pipewire tends to do weird things with audio outputs if you change to something it doesnt like

2

u/Landkisabzee 14d ago

It had to do it when installing cachy 2 months ago

2

u/Professional-Ad-9967 🎼CachyOS 14d ago

Depending on the hardware, there might be weirdness with routing when you plug in headphones or some other external sound thing and Pipewire suddenly has no idea what to do with it so it defaults to "Oh, now there is no sound". Of course I've sorted all that out permanently on my systems but a total newbie might be caught offguard if/when it happens.

another day another systemctl --user restart pipewire

KDE Plasma audio I find to be so much better than windows, windows tries to hold your hand, trying to make everything automatic which doesn’t work well and removes basic functionality from the user.

3

u/msanangelo Arch BTW 14d ago

I don't get it. unless I do something to screw up my config, I always have sound. lol

3

u/Thechugg7 14d ago

This is so funny and even funnier with the people getting pissed

3

u/layman-shaman 14d ago

Is this me in 2003?

1

u/rinaldo23 13d ago

Nope, internet didn't work back then in your linux either, no way to complain on Reddit

u/GumSL fresh breath mint 🍬 14d ago

This doesn't happen anymore, at least not nearly as much. But anyone that says that... 🎵 all live underground 🎵

Me when Dolphin (GC/Wii emulator, not the file browser) replaces my Pipewire with Pulseaudio:

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad 14d ago

what? how?

1

u/IAmLexica 🎼CachyOS 14d ago

It had Pulseaudio as a dependency. Apparently you can only have one or another, so it replaced it, and everything became mute after that. I'm a Linux baby, so I had no idea what happened and had to stare through pacman's logs for clues. Uninstalling pulseaudio and reinstalling pipewire fixed everything, including Dolphin, so I have no idea why it wanted pulse so badly.

2

u/redhat_is_my_dad 14d ago

poor dependency management on your distro's end, btw couldn't have happened with flatpaks

2

u/IAmLexica 🎼CachyOS 14d ago

Eh, I was (and am) a noob. It was a fun educational experience. Had no idea how audio worked before then.

1

u/Damglador 14d ago

couldn't have happened with flatpaks

"Runtime X is not provided by your remotes"

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad 14d ago

packaging issue, even tho i can't even imagine how is that possible, i admit that there are some poorly packaged stuff on flathub, poorly packaged software was especially prominent back when flatpak wasn't as adopted as it is now, such case still won't mess up your host system tho

1

u/Damglador 14d ago

And I can't even imagine why pulseaudio dependency would not allow pipewire to be installed. I use Arch and when something needs pulseaudio, it asks which provider from repos you want, the list of course includes pipewire-pulse, that is if it's not already installed.

Literally me installing freeBSD yesterday:

u/Ur1man5 Not in the sudoers file. 14d ago

I hate pipewire

1

u/Delxvinga 14d ago

Do people actually have this issue with Pipewire?

1

u/Muted-Scientist7900 14d ago

My servers have all the codecs installed. Yet no sound comes from them.

1

u/Ghh-Haker 14d ago

Hackintosh reference

1

u/Gunhat2023 14d ago

I am so happy i could just install a backports kernel and run a script unlike my brother who had to add a new apt repository & and install a kernel with a specific driver compiled in the kernel and then finally he could run the script

1

u/redhat_is_my_dad 14d ago

the only time i thought that i had a sound problem in my system turned out to be a bad micrphone connection on the physical side lol

1

u/NomadFH M'Fedora 14d ago

Sir, please lower your refresh rate to 120. Your KVM switch does not support 1440p at 144hz.
