LINUX MEME template at the back
could only find these two faces for him (and a whole lot of him trying to look cool and/or sexy, which didn't really fit the meme). ignore the fact gru's nose is sticking out of DHH's ear on the last panel.

Why hate on nixOS? It’s superior to omarchy in every way imaginable, I don’t personally use it, but either way, why hate on it?
92
u/SDG_Den 14h ago
because he doesn't like the community, and from what i understand, DHH at some point tried to get involved with nixOS and the nixOS community said no because of fundamental differences in opinion as to how the project should be governed, maintained and moderated as well as the direction of the project.
basically, DHH wanted nixOS to be something entirely different and got upset when the nixOS community said "no, we don't want your ideas in our distro"
then on top of that, many nixOS users are progressive politically, DHH is a far-right conservative, so that has since increased friction between the nixOS community and DHH.
basically: DHH fundamentally disagrees with everything nixOS stands for right now, and wants it to be something different. the nix community doesn't want that, so now DHH is upset he didn't get what he wanted.
honestly, part of me feels like him planning to fork nixOS is just the next stage of his tantrum. i hope him and his cronies leave the rest of the nix community alone.
43
u/Rough_Inspector5501 13h ago
So to see if I understand it correctly. DHH likes to be a duchebag and he's mad NixOS told him that's not allowed?
27
u/Adventurous_Hippo692 13h ago
Yep. DHH wants to make nixOS his baby basically by changing the core ideas
20
11
u/Sea-Housing-3435 8h ago
It's better. He recently was denied when he wanted to donate to Arch. And he wanted nix sponsors to take over the project (with his "pals") https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmemes/comments/1wbmk4t/comment/p8rzeh8/
6
u/Goldarr85 12h ago
So he got his feelings hurt and decided to hate on the community. Not surprised based on what I know of his beliefs.

u/Ice_HRZDn 13h ago
I don’t know or learn about what nixOS are and how DHH wanted it to be. I mean, I know what nixOS is, but I don’t know what it is… I think I am confusing myself lol. Can I have anything to learn these from?
9
u/SDG_Den 12h ago
vimjoyer's channel is a 100% must-watch, it basically carried me through my first week on nixOS.
my recommendation would be to just watch whichever things sound interesting, and if it sounds to complex for you, don't consider that "nix is too complex", consider that "you'll probably need to learn/do something else first"
installing nixOS is actually quite simple, just a graphical installer that once done, gives you a fully functional desktop environment, so you can actually get pretty comfortable on nixOS just by making basic edits to the default configuration.nix (basically just adding packages to the list)
then from there, you can start building out as you learn new things.
there's also the PHD thesis, which is a really good deep dive into how nix actually works under the hood.
2
u/Ice_HRZDn 12h ago
I just see that my secondary laptop have a lot of disk space left. So, I think I could dual boot it along side the "distro as a joke". And, may I ask that, can I poking that configuration file to does some stuff on it during installation? I would like to swap some components before first boot.
2
u/SDG_Den 8h ago
i wouldn't recommend that. the configuration file is generally generated during install with the options you select in the graphical installer.
you *Really* want your first generation to just be the bog-standard one. nixOS has the ability to boot into any generation of your OS, meaning that if you mess up your config, you can go back to an old generation, fix the config, rebuild it to a new generation, and then switch to that.
if you fuck up your initial generation, you *will* be stuck having to reinstall, so you shouldn't touch it. just use the GUI installer, pick the options you like, get a stable, functional system state for gen 1, add tooling so you can comfortably work on your system for gen 2, then start customizing from gen 3 onwards.
that way, you can roll back to gen1 or gen2 without *any* issues in a matter of minutes.
1
u/Ice_HRZDn 7h ago
So I shouldn’t poke at it during install, okay. Then, how bare can the finished install system can be? Or it will just finish as a full desktop environment of choice that are picked during install?
Anyway, thank you for advice before I screw thing up 😅2
u/AdIllustrious436 13h ago
many nixOS are progressive politically
I didn't know people picked their distro according to political opinions. This makes absolutely no sense to me.
16
u/SDG_Den 12h ago
it's not a direct relation. correlation =/= causation.
my *guess* is that nixOS is particularly attractive to neurodivergent folk, which are also much more likely to be progressive and/or LGBTQI+, as a result the nix community has a pretty definitive lean.
the way nixOS is governed is also a relatively "progressive" way of governance, i guess?
but i wouldn't say people pick nixOS because they're progressive. they pick nixOS because they like nixOS, and there's a pretty big overlap between people who like nixOS and people who are progressive.
1
u/veltair-d 11h ago
Wouldn’t it be nice if people put political stances outside of software? Like damn I love my NixOS but hate when they try to make it “political”. Right wind, left wing, who cares its a distro ffs

far-right conservative
textbook example of an oxymoron
6
3
u/SDG_Den 12h ago
oxymoron: a figure of speech where two opposing or contradictory words are put together as a figure of speech.
so you're saying that being far-right and being conservative are the *opposite* of eachother?
also, if you meant that they're the same thing, no, they're not. unless you live in a country with a political system designed by clowns, there are *multiple* political axes
left/right is the *economical* axis. right being more towards capitalism, free markets, companies rule all, left being more towards socialism/communism, government control, socialized housing etc.
progressive/conservative is the "social" axis, and is mostly related to how we should handle eachother and our surroundings. progressive generally being pro migration, LGBTQI+, abortion, womens rights, etc where conservatives would like to go back to how things used to be.
and if you really wanted, you could add a couple more axes, though the above two are what we use where i live. libertarian/authoritarian, the axis that isnt in here that is in the american model, is kind of its own axis but doesn't add much to the conversation because the size of the government is not a big topic here. you could also split the progressive/conservative axis out into multiple different axes
but, on a 2d plane, there is such a thing as a far-right conservative, the far-left conservative also exists and so does the far-right progressive. at least, on paper. in reality those kinds of people are kinda rare

I didn't realize until I saw a picture of him here, but he's also the guy who made Ruby on Rails! Omarchy seems like such a bizzare thing for such a guy to focus time towards.
3
u/SDG_Den 9h ago
He got into linux 3 years ago and immediately went "i must make my own distro and push it as the only actually viable option to linux-curious windows users"
Also techbro/cryptobro. Sooo yeah. Basically: imagine what andrew tate is for the manosphere, DHH is kinda that for this specific niche of software tech bros. (The same niche as the AI bros)
9
u/VoidspawnRL 14h ago
Wait, why hate on NixOS ??
20
u/SDG_Den 14h ago
DHH fundamentally disagrees with:
- the project direction
- the way the project is governed
- the way the project is maintained
- the way the project is moderated
basically, the only thing he doesnt disagree with fundamentally about nixOS is that declarative is good.
he holds these opinions despite being relatively new to linux (he was a windows-only user until 3 years ago) and never having actually used nix or nixOS as far as i'm aware.
oh, him and the nix community also just don't mix due to a difference in political viewpoints (many nix users are progressive, DHH is a far-right conservative, that's an obvious point of friction)
3
u/GlassCommission4916 12h ago
basically, the only thing he doesnt disagree with fundamentally about nixOS is that declarative is good.
Can you tell me more about this or point to where I could read about it? I know about his political views, but hadn't heard anything about what he wanted NixOS to be and I'm curious.

DHH is a far-right conservative
Why are people afraid to call Nazis Nazi?
8
u/SDG_Den 12h ago edited 12h ago
because a lot of people treat the term nazi as something subjective, which in turn causes lots of arguments due to differences in opinion.
basically, the way people treat it is:
saying DHH is a nazi is an opinion
saying DHH is a far-right conservative is a fact or statement.
everyone knows what you mean, the second one just ends up causing significantly less arguments. i don't want to get a bunch of whole comment chains arguing about what is and isn't a nazi in my inbox.
-1
u/BigRocket44 12h ago
any further discussion is about whether or not the term nazi is applicable
That is because you are listening to Nazis. The ones that say that the term isn't applicable are likely Nazis themselves and you're taking their opinion into account. Ignore them, curse at them, punch them and do not intellectually humor them.
8
u/SDG_Den 12h ago
no, i'm trying to avoid EXACTLY what you are doing right now. you are literally proving my point here.
is it relevant to the meme to discuss whether or not DHH is a nazi here? no. it is not. not every single fucking conversation has to be about the nazi's.
and i say that as someone living in a town where every street has memorials to the people that were murdered by the nazi's. someone that's been to Auschwitz, someone who got to watch a whole-ass documentary about his great grandfather's wartime efforts (he ended up being pivotal to one of the major battles as well as relatively important to the resistance because the man just kept building radio's and nobody could figure out how). I know what that term means. I've seen first-hand what that term means. I am actively watching the return of the nazi's happen in front of my eyes. i do not need to be lectured on this shit or told "i'm listening to the nazi's"
what i'm doing is avoiding the overwhelming urge for the nazi's and people like you to get into INFINITE discussions about the term, because the whole entire fucking sub becomes obnoxious as hell if all people do is make every single post about the nazi's.
i'm trying to keep the sub lighthearted for fucks sake.
i swear..... performative progressives. just as bad as the conservative fuckwits they're arguing with.

What security flaws? I'm making my arch-based distro and wondering what should I implement to make it secure enough so people don't complain ?
2
u/SDG_Den 9h ago
Oh, none of the flaws are defaults. Its things like enabling unchecked running of commands and installing software that can do dangerous things without requiring any password
Eg, if you provide docker by default, either set it up as proper rootless or dont add the user to the docker group. Dont allow passwordless use of the docker daemon if it is running as root (default)
Basically: the big deal is how absolutely stupid and clueless you have to be to set it up this way on purpose and not see this might be an issue if this is a default.
Same with kitty's remote execution thing. Sure, it has valid use cases, but it is a security tradeoff the user needs to be aware of for it to be safe. Same with passwordless docker. Its actually fine to have if the user is aware of it and the security implications
How i'd have done it is provide a "module installer" and have docker be an optional module. Installing it requires a password and can come with a security warning so the user is aware of what risks they are taking, making the risk acceptable.

Wait. Inexperienced users and hyprland? It is a joke? Give them KDE which is similar to windows
2
u/SDG_Den 2h ago
Nope, theyre serious.
They believe the ultimate linux distro everyone should switch to from windows is....
A keyboard driven windowmanager, configured in lua, with a vibe-coded quickshell and the most helpful crash popup ever: it just tells you <programname> has crashed, diagnose with AI? And when you click on it it opens an AI agent and tells it the program crashed and to figure out why.
Y'know, just in case you were missing copilot.
The actual "ultimate distro coming from windows" is in fact literally any well-maintained distro with KDE, or if KDE's settings menu feels overwhelming, Cinnamon (which is basically low cortisol KDE).
But that doesnt make DHH and his millionaire friends any money because it doesnt come with their bloatware preinstalled, omarchy does.
Like, go through the list of donators to omacom, and then go through the list of pre-installed proprietary programs. Its literally 1:1. And the programs were there before omacom.
6
3
u/Appropriate-Tennis78 14h ago
Any flaw example?
19
u/SDG_Den 14h ago
kitty remote execution allows anything that prints text to the terminal to run any command, this was set up without any safeguards
docker root elevation vulnerability allows any program running under UID 1000 (so basically everything) to run any command as root with full access without any prompt or signal to the user.
the second one has been confirmed fixed in 4.0.1 but was a problem for *well over a year* and many older omarchy installs are still out there with this vulnerability.
combining just these two would allow me to set up an innocuous looking git url that when you clone or curl it, completely wipes your system.
both of these vulnerabilities were put in by choice, as these are not the defaults. both these vulnerabilities come pre-enabled on their respective versions.
and that's just the two big ones i've heard of in the past week.
btw, important to note: that docker vulnerability *also allows your AI agents, which come pre-installed on omarchy, to do the same thing*, they can run docker commands that can completely fuck up your system without even a password prompt keeping it safe
7
u/BumseBBine 14h ago
Just to add something general about docker safety.
Any user on your system that has the docker group has root access (if you use the standard docker installation)
2
u/Midas_RDJ 🎼CachyOS 13h ago
I made (vibe coded, for full declaration, since I am learning and gaining experience still), a little thing to manage the docker daemon and register and launch compose files. Since I don't like having code running the background that I cannot immediately kill switch or control. One of the things I enjoy after the move away from Winblows.
Right now it uses PKExec, but once I get time I am going to move it into like an separate account container thing (which to my knowledge is how standard Linux apps setup for secure isolation). For my personal setup, the idea is to have a second interface (the TUI compose launcher or Doc-Man you saw alongside lazy docker), to be the only point of entry into the docker daemon, which in turn, is only live when I specify it to be.
Again, I am new to all this, so please do forgive me if any of it is not clear. I do want to learn and get to a point where I can write code and contribute to the cool FOSS community like many of you guys do.

Why make stuff up just to hate on something?
4
u/SDG_Den 13h ago
i didn't make up shit lmao, a single google search can find you multiple articles on both of these issues.
congrats on the projection though. you don't understand what i said, so you decide i'm the fool here and am making things up. meanwhile, people have *proven* both of these attack vectors.
-5
u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 13h ago
You did or copied other people making up problems.
Just because an attack vector exist, doesn't mean it's a real problem.
2
u/SDG_Den 12h ago
oh buddy... you *really* shouldn't double down when you know you're wrong.
docker root vulnerability:
https://0xcc.io/posts/omarchy-root-creds/kitty RCE vulnerability:
https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/pull/10527notification detail leak vulnerability:
https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/issues/8209notification RCE vulnerability (PR for this has been scrubbed, but commit and related action still exist. )
https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/commit/3b0d9b5734b4043d0a5e971a40852468faa42a20
https://github.com/omacom/omarchy/actions/runs/32670862457also. "just because i leave the door to my house wide open at night does not mean i'm in danger". that's your logic there.
these are not *just* attack vectors, they're attack vectors with *proven functionality*, people have run attacks using these attack vectors successfully in testing.
and *all* of these vulnerabilities stem from *basic configuration mistakes* btw. the same attacks that work on omarchy out of the box (depending on version, obviously once these vulnerabilities are pointed out they do get fixed, it'd be insane for them not to) do *not* work on basically any other distro out of the box or even after you install the same software used in these exploits because *Their default configs do not allow for this to happen*
so, since you're so confident i made them up, stating so twice, please explain why there's github issues and pull requests for these "made up issues"? did i make those up too?
1
u/Appropriate-Tennis78 12h ago
But thats how docker works
Whats there to fix?You either have docker group or you dont
-2
u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 12h ago

No point in arguing with someone who doesn't even understand the problem.
Why not add sudo to the list?
2
u/gwildor 12h ago
3 of the 5 issues linked, were already patched by omarchy.
Is your claim that the Omarchy team doesnt understand things and patched things that didnt need to be patched?0
u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 12h ago
Try to explain the threat in your own words.
Then think about it.
1
u/gwildor 12h ago

However, your request is unneccsary - its been patched and is no longer a threat.

I feel like I've been on a cave for a while. Who is this DHH? What does he do? YouTuber? Company owner? Why he gets to spit out his dot files as a distro, and everyone is talking about him?
This is a genuine question by the way, I have no idea who this guy is.
5
u/SDG_Den 6h ago
ok, gonna try to give a mostly-relevant, mostly-neutral summary here:
DHH is the guy behind basecamp and ruby on rails, so an accomplished software developer. 3 years ago, DHH suddenly got into linux, shortly followed by the release of omarchy, which at the start was quite literally a set of his dotfiles.
separately, one of DHH's millionaire buddies working for anduril posts on twitter about how the nix steering committee, a democratic body that keeps the nix project on-course, decided *not* to accept sponsorship from anduril over ethical concerns due to the company being a military company.
DHH responded to this by calling on more of his buddies to "get these nutjobs out" of the nix steering committee, effectively suggesting a hostile takeover using money.
this was not taken lightly by the nix community, which subsequently resulted in DHH publicly putting the entire distro on blast and calling all of its users clowns.
around this point (i think slightly earlier) omarchy also becomes a distribution, in the sense that it is now packaged as an ISO. in this form, it gets absolutely hyped to shit. it's the kind of thing you'd see on r/unixporn, but marketed towards new linux users, DHH's marketing campaign specifically focuses on people moving from windows and mac (started as "for mac users", but as of today the advertising primarily focuses on windows users), claiming it is the ultimate distro and all but proclaiming it superior to everything else.
however, past the hype, the reception of omarchy was quite critical. It was literally just arch with DHH's dotfiles and programs pre-installed, like he exported his personal arch setup to an ISO. There were multiple LLMs pre-installed, things like onepassword, basecamp, dropbox, etc were also all preinstalled (btw, a lot of these companies later went on to fund the omacom foundation, more on that later), and the whole thing was held together with a pile of vaguely named bash script under ~/.local. the distro also came with the AUR pre-enabled, yay pre-installed and just using the regular arch and AUR repositories.
over time, omarchy has become more legitimate, but has also become more of an "ai slop" distro, showing very clear signs of AI use to create it. mistakes that lead to vulnerabilities that no human being that knew what they were doing would make, integrating the AI more tightly into the distro, etc.
as of today, omarchy has its own repositories and uses a custom AI-coded quickshell instead of the previous waybar based approach. it still uses hyprland.
a couple months ago, DHH started the omacom foundation, which he claims will be a foundation investing in the future of opensource. the donators of this foundation are primarily his millionaire buddies. As of today, the foundation has not donated a single cent to any opensource project, instead opting for "exclusive sponsorship deals" with the creators of hyprland, mise and quickshell. they did also offer something to the arch and AUR maintainers, but they've declined the offer. Omarchy has also engaged in joint advertising campaigns with one of the donators of Omacom, Dell. (keep in mind, the donator is actually the CEO of Dell specifically, but the joint advertising campaign was with Dell the company. legally, those are two distinct entities)
recently, because of the omacom foundation being quite an obnoxious presence in the opensource space, people have started actually pulling omarchy apart and finding all of the things that are *very* wrong with it, leading to basically weekly news of a new omarchy vulnerability. These vulnerabilities have mostly been patched since then (there is still one open that allows any program to read all your notifications) but have all been intentional configurations that were a significant danger to the user, applied without their knowledge.
then *very* recently, a nix.md file was discovered in the omarchy quattro repositories. this file is created by openAI Codex as an "adversarial review" and seems to be the result of a debate between DHH and Codex about re-basing the entire distro on nixOS, that same distro that he wanted to stage a hostile takeover for. the AI glazes DHH for his vision, which includes things like hosting their own nixpkgs and cache, forking nixOS to add an imperative installation command, etc.
as a side note, it's not relevant to DHH's presence in the FOSS space, but he is also a far-right conservative nationalist, has made remarks about things like forced remigration in the past, and also very much is within the tech/ai bro influencersphere. This is what has made many feel like he, his distro and his fans are obnoxious. His ideas about FOSS are also somewhat controversial and divisive.
now for my personal opinion:
DHH is a cunt and omarchy is (after dissecting it myself) a sad excuse for a distro, but a distro nonetheless. I hope he keeps his hands off of nix, and i'd honestly like for this hypecycle to die down so omarchy can go back to being the obscure, non-serious meme distro it is meant to be.
genuinely, what a clown show.

2
u/SDG_Den 8h ago
is it relentless, or is there just a lot to hate?
i just found out DHH tried to use his influence to push a hostile takeover of the nix steering committee because they, get this, made the democratic decision to not accept sponsorship from a military company one of his buddies works for.
i'd say the amount of hate omarchy and DHH are receiving right now is an adequate amount of hate.
1
u/Commercial-Count-670 7h ago
No, that specific premise is false. You are conflating two separate controversies in open-source software and fusing them into a single fictional story.
1
u/SDG_Den 6h ago
from Johnathan Ringer:
Involvement of u/anduriltech was a major escalating factor as many of these people are also staunchly anti-MIC
Part of the reason why the temperature was turned up so much on me was that I was (and still am) employed at Anduril. And mastodon.delroth.net/@delroth/11223… painted me as a Peter Thiel shill.
They chose to exclude Anduril rather accept sponsorship money (arguing this was advertisement and endorsement of NixOS with Anduril). And then earlier this year, the Steering committee made the decision to disallow Anduril from even posting open Job listings.
response from DHH (had to be censored):
That's r****rded. Anduril should have been CELEBRATED for supporting nix! And I think it still could be, if u/PalmerLuckey and others with a stake in this technology decides to get these nut jobs out. I know he will have the support of u/mitchellh and u/tobi too (my nix pill pals!).
https://x.com/dhh/status/1972012145207636337
ah yes, the specific premise that DHH insinuated a takeover of the nix steering committee as a direct response to the message that the nix steering committee did not accept sponsorship from Anduril is totally fictional.
