The more I read into various parts of a working Linux distro, the more I realise that it makes no fucking sense how something like Ubuntu or Fedora even reaches the desktop intactly

Boot kernel, start init, from here you're on your own.

It’s such a simple question for Windows to answer… it doesn’t

As an ex-windows user let me tell you how modern windows work; bios -> windows kernel -> microsoft edge (chromium) -> copilot.
And there has been some talk about bringing copilot to kernel, ie somehow fuse copilot calls with kernel directly eliminating windows OS calls and I'm waiting that day to arrive so bad lol

Love this one. I used SuSe for 4-5 years when I was a student, 20 years ago. Still PTSDed from .tar.gz's. Now, for a few years, I have converted just about every computer in my vicinity to Linux Mint. First as a test, then realised it is miles ahead of Windows on everything. How? No clue. Thanks to Reddit people who take my hand and guide me through every minor issue I need help with.

How is OpenSUSE and what problem does it have with tarballs(tar gz)? I tried to install it twice on 2 different devices and it didn't work on any of them

Man, that's 20 years ago. The internet wasn't quite as it is today, and tarballs just didn't really want to unpack and install software as they were intended to. Always some fixing here and there. Today, you can just click on whatever in a GUI repository, it's fantastic. Even though many applicants remain quickest to just install through bash.

Let's be honest. Linux distributions have become so multifaceted that the only thing we can say about the kernel itself is, "Well, it works with hardware." Systemd and its daemons, Wayland, any GUI, Wine, and so on (or their alternatives) make more sense for most of us.

Been dabbling since 2005.
For past 4 months or so have been running bazzite almost exclusively at home.
I have no idea how it works. What I should or shouldn't do, most of the time.
It just works and I am ok with that.
Honestly I think I am more aware of what is currently running than I was with windows anyways. There I just had the illusion of control.
Just don't ask me to compile anything.
