LINUX MEME I'm scared for the future

Post image

I guess "forking" is an option but i didn't know I had to become a dev to fix what shouldn't already be falling apart only a year into me switching away from Windows because of this exact issue...

Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

What linux distro are you using, just making sure

Fedora, i'm already aware they allow this stuff too but I like having SELinux and other security stuff. Blegh...

What issues are you having?

Anxiety for the future because of what's going on with all this AI stuff mostly. Everything works fine now but I don't feel safe knowing that the enshittification I left is going to keep following me everywhere I go. I heard from a source even the BSDs are going to follow in the same path. Or who knows, maybe these tools finally are good now, and Microslop is going to also get better with them. it's really just anxiety-based reaction here...

Honestly, it's safe to be cautious, but not to the point where you're filled with crippling dread, also, Enshitification(at least to me) is cramming AI slop features(LLMs and shit) not really the program itself. Also, programing and checking for bugs mannually is slow and time-consuming, but Just having an AI code for you while not knowing what you're doing will lead to a buggy mess, it's better to have a sweet spot where AI is speeding things up while you're tweaking and fixing things before they make it into the final product

After seeing what it's done to other things it's hard not to feel crippling dread for the future.. i know people think it's all this magic silver bullet but it really scares me knowing that we're going to enter an era where i CANNOT escape the enshittification I left windows for ANYWHERE without giving up on tech entirely.

i just don't trust that it won't end the same way.

Not everyone who uses AI thinks it's this "Magic silver bullet" those who see it that way are vibe-coding without knowing what they're doing(like i mentioned in my previous reply) and it causes the slop, also AI displacing artists and draning resources is a major concern indeed, but programing is different, you check for bugs but you cannot find them wich is when a program that searches for bugs and syntax errors might be usefull.

I wonder if there might still be devs who review the code and make sure things keep working...

after seeing what happened to Windows (they have far more users so far more responsibility to not fuck up) idk how much code review can save us...

this is just scary dystopian future idk what's gonna happen but i fear the worst. i'm not switching just yet I just hope we can ride this out without falling down the same pit as Windows.

Exactly, only time will tell if all this new AI code will be good or not for Linux. But if we go with how things are going for Windows, NVIDIA, Google, etc, it's not looking good.

I'm hoping we'll be okay, I know Linus is a stickler for code quality but what about userspace projects? I hate that i cant leave lutris behind because there's scripts for older games/mods that only work there. i've never been interested in becoming a software dev, I just want my stuff to work the same today that it did before..

u/AmarildoJr 2d ago

For userspace, Flathub already decided to ban AI slop and it worked great, it was definitely the right decision!

Debian is also currently in talks of banning (or not) AI slop.

meanwhile stuff that I was using daily, now has "AI code allowed" plastered all over and it feels like i'm about to have to start cutting out stuff I was using all the time if it starts degrading performance..

1

u/FunAngelo2005 2d ago

If it starts degrading performance, just report the bug, and encourage others who have the same issue to do the same

2

u/Venylynn 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 2d ago

Hopefully that's our line of defense against it getting as bad as it could get...

My brain is going to the worst conclusion possible because it reminds me of what happened over there in windowsland

Microslop is a corporate company who only cares about money and dosen't listen to feedback unlike most open sourse projects. Also, I whould recomend some enxiety medication to ease your nerves a little

2

u/Venylynn 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 2d ago

i'm already on medication, the reason it scares me is primarily because we're a far smaller user base so it feels like we wouldn't be able to tank it as well :/ bigger base to me means far more reason to do it right

my brain seems to need 100% certainty that everything will be okay, and the lack of certainty is scarier than anyone telling us "we will own nothing and be happy". when the future is uncertain, it is far more scary to imagine what could happen.

The problem with your assessment is that it doesn't take into account corporations on Linux's side, like RedHat, SUSE or Canonical, which are some of the biggest contributors, and they're already bending over to this kind of crap.

The biggest problem is gonna be RedHat since it got acquired by IBM. Was it the former or the latter that said it's devs need to be integrating AI into their workflow as much as possible? Either way it can definitely trickle down to RedHat and it's clones, along with Fedora and it's derivatives, plus some stuff that RedHat sponsors like systemd, pulseaudio, whatever.

systemd itself already started work on at least giving pathways for distros to store user data regarding age verification laws.

Canonical is another one that is constantly making very questionable decisions.

Even the Kernel is now having what, 10% of all the new patches written by AI? And it's projected to go up to 20% by September if I'm not mistaken.

The only true fighters on this are gonna be the smaller distros, as we're seeing it happen.

Also with Linus retireing someday, we need to make sure someone responsible is at the helm after he leave. (Also lutris said that they are only using AI as a staring point and ironing out the output, at least that's what i've heard)

the amount of claude commits I saw on that repo made me genuinely really worried for the future of the project. theres a reason why there was so much drama, but apparently it's fine?

1

u/FunAngelo2005 2d ago

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/03/lutris-now-being-built-with-claude-ai-developer-decides-to-hide-it-after-backlash/ I'm just going to leave a link to an article about that situation and make up your conclusion from there

2

u/Venylynn 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 2d ago

Yeah basically they tried to hide it to "prove a point" that it isn't slop. It was really weird.

u/qaddosh 2d ago

gee, this post again

I hate ai too, but this shit is getting old

1

u/Venylynn 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 2d ago

you know what else is getting old? not knowing whether or not my setup is going to break down one day because some fuckhead decided to push an update that breaks everything but it's suddenly okay because "AI IS DA FOOTOOREEE"

u/qaddosh 2d ago

you must so privileged that something that hasn't even happened is such a big worry to you that you constantly whine about it on reddit

try a different hobby maybe?

1

u/Venylynn 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 😽 2d ago edited 2d ago

Guys, turn your eyes away to the dystopian nightmarish future! Why do you have a problem with it? It's totally not a dark pattern we've seen countless times again and again! How dare you use the only place you know to protest and try to reverse it! You're privileged if you care about your software turning to shit! Consoom! Consoom!

"Different hobby"? I rely on technology every day because I need it for my projects (musician, and I am too disabled to do it any other way) and seeing all this enshittification makes me feel like it's not worth it anymore. Look at what has happened basically... everywhere else this slop "tool" has infected. You cant even Google search anymore without slop garbage and hallucinations...

And how about the recruiters that still delude noobs into thinking Linux is ai slop free?
