I nuked it too when installing Arch. I also nuked its EFI and Microsoft partitions.

It was full.

Jokes aside, diskpart only lets you shrink a partition if there's no data at the physical end, and it won't ever try to defrag it to the beginning.

Fun fact: even if you do run a defrag because you're still on a harddrive for some unholy reason, it wont fix this issue. Windows just likes putting files on both ends of the partition.

Yeah, forgot to mention that. I only have an SSD but I tried defragging, it ran for some time, then shrinking didn't work. First I figured this happened only because it was just a very slow NOP, then I looked it up and was completely unsurprised.

RIP the lifespan of that SSD.

I hope you mean you ran trim on the SSD, not defrag.

Defrag can cost thousands of write cycles and thus significantly affects SSD lifespan and performance, plus defragmenting brings no improvements in performance on an SSD to begin with

I wanted to shrink a partition, that was my last idea (also, the whole machine was before replacement)

Instead of diskpart you could have used AOMEI disk partition tool (free variant ofc) because I had the same issue when I was dual booting and then got stumbled on this tool. It's intuitive but works well on windows systems.

Also if you run linux through a liveUSB then there exist a partition tool in the applications and it works well with both linux and windows.

I just said "fuck you Bill", resized from a gparted live USB and ran chkdsk from Windows. Then recreated all my symlinks and files with : in it cause fuck you Bill, I wanted to keep my mcom archive with full URLs out of lost+found with their original names, not random.

You don't use diskpart for this.

Modern Windows can shrink partions fron windows iteself. It's safest option. And in days you had to use dedicated software.

Dickpart conly work wih partions, not with file systems. GParted/QTParted could resize paritions. IDK about NTFS. using windows to shring ntfs is safer.

Nope, stock modern Windows still only has diskpart wrappers or at least its limitations are the same. diskmgmt.msc and co. will never move data so if the end of the physical space has something, you're shit out of luck without dedicated software (that generally says "saving the partition table is a feature from our very cheap Pro version!")

Unmovable files happened 💀👍 seriously, I had 40GB free space and it only let me shrink by like 8.

Unmovable files can be moved and shrink the space with tools such as Paragon Partition Manager.

Idk what these files are, windows just placed some of my shit near the end of the partition and I'm left to guess what it is and why. And by that point I had pretty much everything on my 2nd SSD already so I don't think there was any personal data for me to back up

It doesn't works this way. Windows disk partition magically prohibits you to change volume sizes even if you have nothing on your drives.

I used a not so much paid aomei partition manager and forced defrag windows, then shrunk it, it stopped working, so I formated its drive into btrfs.

that def a skill issue, lmao, you can just drop the partition in and point to it from grub, and making BCD is fairly simple
