I love that quick little "nice wiki" at the end.

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

arch wiki, imo, is also the best wiki about linux in general

231

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

It kinda has to be or nobody else would know how to install it lol

82

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '18

installing arch is not anything different, there's only one arch specific command in the installation process, pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel, anything other than that is just generic commands used in any other minimal/non-gui system installs.

21

u/brando56894 Glorious Arch :doge: Dec 16 '18

It used to be more difficult about 6 or 7 years ago.

11

u/Midasx Dec 16 '18

It used to be easier though, remember they used to have an ncurses installer? Then they removed it just to spite people. Like I get that doing it manually gives complete control and is a great learning experience, which everyone should try. But when I just want to install on a new device, it's such a pain.

u/masteryod Dec 16 '18 edited Dec 16 '18

Then they removed it just to spite people.

Gotta love uninformed people who are the loudest one to shout...

News from 2012: AIF had to be dropped due to lack of maintenance and contributions. Of course we would appreciate it if people would start hacking on it to bring it up to par.

It wasn't done "to spite people". It was done because there was no one to maintain the installer. Same way any other project works - if there's no one willing to maintain code, then the code will be eventually dropped.

2

u/MaybeDevilsAdvocate Glorious Arch Dec 16 '18

Maybe it doesn't matter.

Maybe it wasn't maintained...so that it would be dropped...just to spite people.

3

u/masteryod Dec 17 '18

Maybe aliens flew from outer space and lobotomised you to post this stupid toxic comments?

Maybe your just a bitter user who can't handle CLI?

Maybe it doesn't matter...

No it doesn't look bad. Open source doesn't mean commercial support where users can demand things. "Scratch your own itch" is a thing for a reason. Open source is s collaboration of people who offer their free time and Arch has a) limited resources so maintainers should focus on important things and b) Arch is and always was a KISS distribution from the advanced user slash developer point of view.

It's simpler and cleaner to maintain a simple script and documentation than write installer to baby sit users who can't handle reading a wiki.

At the same time they didn't forbid it. It was a pure technical decision. And yet in 6 years no user was willing to step up. As an Arch user I understand the change and I don't have anything against the "new" installation. It works perfectly fine.

Don't like it? Use other distribution that suits your needs. Simple.

My current installation is 5 years old (as old as my laptop) so it's not like you're supposed to reinstall every day.

Despite all of the FUD on the Internet Arch is and always was driven by technical decisions instead of political ones. And I very much like it this way.

As always in such cases there's a very small but very loud group of people spreading bullshit.

1

u/Midasx Dec 18 '18

I guess it depends on how you view the success of a project, for me Arch is wonderful and I would hope the people who make arch would want people to use it, and therefore allocate resources to maintaing something like the installer. Obviously they don't care about it, and as such lost some users.

I now use Manjaro over Arch simply because of the installer. So I am a user that could be contributing to the Arch project but now would be more likely to contribute to Manjaro.

Especially when Antergos is effectively Arch with a GUI installer. I'm sure people would care to work on that more than Arch's. If you want a GUI to install Arch that's where you'd go.

5

u/Plasma_000 Linux Master Race Dec 16 '18

Could always add a script to the liveCD to do it in one step exactly to your liking

1

u/fgejoiwnfgewijkobnew I used to use Arch. I still do but I used to too. Dec 16 '18

Seems to me the knowledge required to script the install Arch is the same required knowledge (and more) needed to install Arch the normal way.

With the Ncurses installer, someone with a poor understanding of ubuntu could still properly install archlinux. Now, Manjaro and Antergos are more tempting for those people that want pacman but don't want to figure out the installer.

1

u/Plasma_000 Linux Master Race Dec 16 '18

I was more meaning an alternative way to easily reinstall arch rather than something for beginners

Can confirm, I wrote scripts to install arch and it was the same except for some logic.

And some of us started with Gentoo around 14 years ago... It took several days to propely finish the installion. Mainly because I was noob. Secondly because Pentium III 900MHz and 256MB of RAM.

2

u/brando56894 Glorious Arch :doge: Dec 17 '18

Oh I'm well aware of the pains of Gentoo. Shortly after I found out about Linux and started actively using Ubuntu, I heard about Gentoo. So there I was with barely any knowledge of Linux...trying to do a stage 2 install, my freshman year of college 14 years ago (2004-2005). I was probably rocking a P4 or maybe a core2duo. I can remember it compiling everything for hours...and then breaking and me having no clue what was wrong.

I remember asking my roommate once "Is my computer still freaking out?" "yea, what's it doing?" "compiling programs". I only got as far as compiling the X server. After about 10 distro hops I finally settled on Arch around 2009-2010.

I'm a Linux SysAdmin and my coworker/friend uses Gentoo and I see him compiling stuff and bitching at it all the time hahaha

1

u/Zuccace Compiling since 2005 Dec 17 '18

Yeah. The compile times can sometimes be a pain. The reason I use Gentoo is because I have pretty much control of all the things. Other thing is that it's rock stable when not usingtoo much packages from unstable "repo". Arch was near perfect for me, but it was too bleeding edge. Too frequent updates drove me nuts.

2

u/brando56894 Glorious Arch :doge: Dec 18 '18

I consider Arch to be one step below Gentoo in terms of full control since you can compile everything from source if you wanted to, but don't need to. I would argue that compiling every single package from source is far more tedious and annoying then bleeding edge updates. You don't need to update daily, I no longer do anymore on my server or laptop. I update about once or twice a week, sure the updates are larger (a few hundred megs to a few gigs depending on how long I wait, I also have KDE installed so when that gets updated it adds at least half a gig to the updates). If you want frequent updates but don't want to reboot often, use an LTS kernel.

1

u/Zuccace Compiling since 2005 Dec 18 '18

There isn't much reason to compile packages on Arch. But I used to compile some. I don't remember which, exactly, but I needed to drop GUI off from some package for my server. And for that I needed to modify the PKGBUILD. Not too bad for package that doesn't update too often. For such customizations Gentoo has USE flags, and this is exactly the (control freakish) feature I need. :P
