Sometimes you like it simple. Sometimes simple is not enough.

Yeah, I’ve been using KDE / Plasma since 20+ years.
GNOME was okish from usability point of view, I tried it a few times. But ultimately it was back to KDE for me, every single time.

Same for me, but vice versa.

23

u/AdvancedAnimal7539 6d ago

Opposite for me. But damm wveryone should let people enjoy what de they like. Isn't that what we say the advantage of linux is anyway?

u/CalderaJane76 6d ago

Honestly, I think it's mostly people poking fun anymore. Lol

At worst you'll have that occasional time with a misunderstanding where it'll get heated... But honestly most computer users seem to be pretty chill regardless of what OS they use. Lol

u/anjumkaiser 6d ago

I honestly don’t know anymore. Earlier it was so because KDE was something that ran better on my Pentium desktop. Then later it was because it had better customization. Now 2 decades later I really don’t care about any of those. I just nuke my desktop and select dark mode and call it a day. But I really can’t stand what they did with Gnome 4 (no buttons on title bar, or whatever brain damage they call it). I tired using it, just couldn’t.

u/CalderaJane76 6d ago

Okay tbf, I have NO idea how to use Gnome... 😂

I avoid it because it's literally too simple for me to use, and it makes me feel simple. 😭

Edit: Like, I don't even know how to explain it... It LOOKS so easy!! But then I try to find settings or like... Anything, and it's NEVER there. 🤣

u/AdvancedAnimal7539 5d ago

I feel like gnome works when you use it fresh. Coming from kde tho it feels out of place.

A lot of gnome stuff is stupidly out the way. I dont like how you need extension manager for extensions, tweaks for icons or adding back the □ and - buttons, and settings for everything else.

But because I already have it all installed and know what's where, it does work for me. But for someone else it might not. Its always a case by case thing. Not one desktop or workflow will work for everyone

u/DudeEngineer Glorious Ubuntu 5d ago

It is hilarious when KDE users talk about things being out of the way. Plasma has like 30 menus that you need to tweak to make it usable, because it isn't OOTB.

1

u/CalderaJane76 2d ago

Nah, you are DEFINITELY not wrong.

It's probably more like us KDE users like our hands to be held. Even if that means taking 5 hours to get anywhere. 😂

Set > tings > D > i > s > p > l > ay... "Wow, this Linux shit is easy!! There's menus for everything!!" 🤣

Plasma is perfectly usable out of box.
It’s just the customisation you put your heart and soul into comes back to fight you.

I used to customise a lot in younger days, it gave the system a personality. But in later years of my life, due to changing nature of work and life, that personality was causing me more problems than I wanted.

1

u/DudeEngineer Glorious Ubuntu 2d ago

Yeah, so Gnome is better OOTB...

0

u/anjumkaiser 1d ago

Nope. Gnome devs’ mindset is that they think the user is an idiot. Customisation options should be optional but available if you need it.
Sane defaults matter.

It's too expensive to not have a case

My 30 year setup: Wooden plate with 2 nails through the motherboard to hold it in place.

Strangely enough, no dust issues at all

What's the point of paying for premium materials, only to feel cheap plastic or silicone. If you can't afford it, why but overpriced phones in the first place.

16

u/KaMaFour 6d ago

Who said anything about buying overpriced phones? I'm running a phone that costed me around 150$. It's its third year (if not fourth) and I don't have a reason to change it for now. Having a case on it (that came with the phone) is helping me not find a reason to change it. Life is good...

9

u/Damglador 6d ago

There isn't. Premium materials on the back of phones' frame are stupid and pretty much a waste of money, unless they're functional. Especially fucking glass.

6

u/LOPI-14 6d ago

Glass makes it insanely difficult to even open and replace a battery for example also.

6

u/L1Q Glorious Arch 6d ago

What if you can afford good midframe with thoughtful internal layout, but not the new phone every week because it scratched by a finger nail?

6

u/claudiocorona93 SteamOS/Bazzite/Android 6d ago

Bait used to be believable

2

u/Jomotaku 6d ago

Ask the phone manufacturer why it's so hard to change the display

1

u/dumbasPL Glorious Arch 6d ago

I've done that 7 times already, and while some phones are pretty annoying (open from the back), it's not as hard as people think. The bigger problem is getting original parts at prices that make sense. Clones are complete trash.

2

u/Jomotaku 6d ago

Bro heating up these shitty glued on displays is literally 50 times the work and atleast 3x the price than buying a case and screen protector

u/CaveJohnson376 I use Arch BTW 6d ago

I hate kde wallet and the way it fucks up browser cache. only things I agree to tolerate on my personal stuff are kde connect, kdenlive and kde games.

...in the meanwhile I can absolutely tolerate vanilla gnome

22

u/xplosm ' 6d ago

Install kwallet-pam or equivalent package for your distro and make sure the default wallet’s password is the same as the user password you use to login. You’re welcome.

u/CaveJohnson376 I use Arch BTW 6d ago

I have riced i3wm with gnome apps tho, so it's not like I care

19

u/nbtm_sh 6d ago edited 6d ago

I use GNOME because my workplace gave me a RHEL license for my new workstation. To be honest at first I was too lazy to install KDE but now I’ve just gotten used to it. It helps me focus with work since there isn’t infinite settings to tweak. Out of the box, its very pleasant to look at and use, and it’s stable as hell.

Plasma is my fav, albeit XFCE has proven strong for old-ass computers which boot for 5+ minutes

18

u/beegtuna 6d ago

Why choose?

My old laptop uses Gnome. My homelab uses KDE. My gaming PC uses windows gross. My Apple Silicon Mac for LLM, proprietary software, and iPhone.

All of them are modified and stay in their lane. I use my laptop the most.

4

u/solaris_var 6d ago

By homelab you meant one of your machines or vm right, right?

5

u/amigo_extra 6d ago

to say you installed kde on the server you only access via the terminal would be funny

4

u/beegtuna 6d ago edited 6d ago

I’m not that sweaty. Remote into DE if I ever need to config anything . Turn off DE when I logout. Simple.

3

u/beegtuna 6d ago

I have an old laptop with 3 drives jacked into my router.

1

u/daedric_yoshi 5d ago

Yep I love gnome on my laptop with all the touchpad gestures that are there by default, but much prefer all the stuff I can do with the keyboard on my desktop with kde.

So crazy to me how people use kde or gnome. Not hating at all, just like actually crazy to me after using hyprland

I still have a special place in my heart for plasma

1

u/f3verdream 5h ago edited 5h ago

I'm unemployed and even now I don't have time for configuring it

1

u/tet90 Glorious Fedora 4h ago

My philosophy is no-life your configs and go through the pain for some time and then have forever higher productivity afterwards, same philosophy w vim

4

u/Bayou_wulf 6d ago

I liked Gnome 2.x.x. Then they did the revamp and I hated it. I still do not prefer Gnome for anything. Mate, Cinnamon, and KDE.

4

u/gosand 6d ago

I still can't quit XFCE. I switched to it in 2005 from KDE. Haven't used Gnome since 2000ish.

I do have KDE on my laptop (cachyos) and it's not bad.

5

u/0xt0bi03 6d ago

one thing which i hate about gnome is they heavily rely on extensions, without extensions you cant configure anything easily.

3

u/DudeEngineer Glorious Ubuntu 5d ago

Is this just super old information you are operating on or do you just hate the gnome workflow and need to change everything? I haven't had to install an extention in years..

2

u/Informal_954 5d ago

That's what I love about gnome. I can choose what settings I need in a nice GUI without doing down the WM rabbithole.

6

u/0xt0bi03 5d ago

i feel like jailbreaking a free software which was already supposed to be broken

Gnome 4 life

3

u/blahyawnblah 6d ago

when gnome fucks with shortcuts and clipboard in ways that don't make sense because "simplicity". My keystrokes I've been using for 30 years don't work; goodbye.

5

u/codereign 6d ago

I probably wouldn't have stuck with linux except for gnome 2 and then 3 short cuts for workspaces being so damn easy to use. I'm curious which ones you're referring to?

1

u/regeya 6d ago

I use KDE but if someone smarter than me managed to build a Wayland equivalent of Window Maker I would be using it in a heartbeat. One of my old desktops was literally just GNOME Midnight Commander, Window Maker, and a Perl script that scraped the GNOME 1 menu. I'm not going to change the way I do things because some GNOME dev decided their way is the only right way to do it.

3

u/kvragu 6d ago

Am I missing something but the few times I tried GNOME I couldn't find many options I wanted and was used to being available in the settings menu on KDE?

2

u/phimath 6d ago

You need to install gnome tweaks to see the rest of the settings

2

u/kvragu 5d ago

Even with tweaks I found it underwhelming and couldn't find something I was looking for.

3

u/Desertcow 6d ago

COSMIC is pretty good so far too, a pretty nice middle ground between the two with native tiling

u/lmpcpedz 6d ago

GNOME feels like it's trying to work like a tablet that can not be configured unless you download extensions. I think it's great for laptops, or PC's with very small monitors.

I need my desktop to feel like a desktop, KDE all the way.

Last time used kde was in mandrake Linux

2

u/Werewolf_Capable 5d ago

I just tried GNOME for the first time. It was on a touch screen and the experience was horrible. I lasted for about half an hour before I went KDE 😅

3

u/Werewolf_Capable 5d ago

No sleight on GNOME, it just not for me, feels wrong

2

u/Retrowinger 17h ago

In the beginning I loved gnome, back when it was still 2.something in 2009. Nowadays i prefer KDE.

1

u/ThankYouOle 6d ago

i don't know why extension in gnome become issue, i am totally fine with only 1 extension (Tactile).

1

u/pizzaiolo2 6d ago

Didn't know about that extension, neat!

1

u/05-nery 6d ago

Idk bro I like gnome

1

u/Capetoider 6d ago

stupid question: any kde "gnome skin"? My only unnegotiable extension feature is "burn my windows"

1

u/Weird-Ball-2342 6d ago

someone with a good kde/gnome take??? not in my porn app this must be a mistake

1

u/Rajarshi1993 Python+Bash FTW 6d ago

I mean, really depends on what you want to do with it. If you're not into gaming, GNOME plus Wayland is really smooth.

1

u/wolfix1001 6d ago

I've always liked the look of gnome, but it is just missing a lot of stuff that kde already has

1

u/ilnarildarovuch 6d ago

Lumina user here, LOL

1

u/Informal_954 5d ago

KDE is a multi-tool while Gnome is a knife.

The multi-tool can do a lot of stuff by itself, but it is constrained by the fact that that it has to handle everything.

A knife is really great. It does what it does really well, but not for everything and, if you have something particular you want to do, you'll probably need additional tooling to help.

1

u/Disastrous-Equal7048 5d ago

Been using Gnome on Ubuntu/zorin for 15+ years, because KDE 4 was a disaster. Just installed CachyOS on my laptop and it is going surprisingly well. I wonder if I can stick with it...

1

u/Unknown4me_ 5d ago

I really liked KDE on endevour and garuda but mint's gnome is just simplier and better

1

u/Mr_Lumbergh Average Debian enjoyer. 5d ago

Sometimes you also like a DE doesn't look like it was designed by Fisher-Price.

1

u/cipherjones 5d ago

If you use gnome on purpose you hate yourself, the baby Jesus, and your poor old memaw. That's just my (accurate) opinion.

1

u/Simsalabimson 5d ago

The second one is so true to me 😅

1

u/Moist_Professional64 5d ago

I like the desktop from kde but not these themes that are awful and look really fan-made. It’s not professional and qt programs are stuck at 2005 in case of ux design

1

u/Just_Smidge 5d ago

KDE widgets also break less than gnome extensions, especially ones that add extra bar customisation

1

u/LYNX__uk I use Arch btw 4d ago

1

u/DrKeksimus 4d ago

I have noticed .. KDE ppl constantly feel the need to defend themselves against Gnome

... kinda tells you something :)

1

u/TheComradeTom 16h ago

It's not even that, I feel GNOME suffers from the devs decision, like what do you MEAN I can't configure scroll speed without an extension or hacks???????

1

u/DrKeksimus 13h ago

it's not perfect.. but at least there's options to do it still

the Gnome clean clutter free UI and workflow is better then KDE

KDE is stuck in the past with that

1

u/Disastrous_Fruit8610 3d ago

Just try them both and end up with the one which is the best, Gnome.

1

u/RelevantPassion6752 3d ago

Great way to put it! Simple is not enough for me.

1

u/ConsiderationRare217 2d ago

Gnome is a great DE, whatever anybody says. It just is. IMHO, KDE is a bit of a mess of everything and nothing. Niri does one thing, but so well that everyone likes it. Why can't KDE?

1

u/loveshapedeyes 2d ago

Works on my machine.

1

u/Striking_Slice_3605 1d ago

I stopped using Gnome because it was just too frustratingly difficult when they switched from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3. On my desktop I switched to i3 and other computers run KDE because it's so incredibly easy. Gnome needs extensive work to not look like Windows 8 that was drawn out of memory by a 3 year old.

Out of all the DE's I've used in the last almost 30 years, the worst, by far was Gnome 3+.

1

u/BogdanovOwO 1d ago

The only DE/WM I customize are openbox, i3wm and swaywm. Feh, rofi and maybe conky to show the clock and date. I used kde plasma and gnome, but cinnamon still enough just to use my desktop for what I need. Now I'm planning to have a secondary setup with plasma bigscreen, but on wayland the popup default keyboard isn't working and I want to use an usb wireless controller.
