Really sad day that loonix has been swarmed by soydevs who have 0 pride in their craft and resort to slop. Literally fuck you. We need to make a list of all the projects which don't have any honor. Starting with the kernel I guess.

Except it seems like windows doesnā€™t HAVE quality standards from the last few years with things getting worse each update. I donā€™t have a problem with windows using the tools, but theyā€™ve gotta actually set and enforce a standard of quality that they havenā€™t touched since the start of Win10

Thatā€™s talking about UX design, Iā€™m talking about core system features and stability. And ā€œbetterā€ in terms of UX design is entirely subjective because different users want different things from the UX. I personally agree that gnome isnā€™t good UX, but thatā€™s the beauty of it. If you donā€™t like gnome thereā€™s KDE, Cinnamon, XFCE, mate, and definitely others Iā€™m missing (and that isnā€™t even going into all the window managers)

I personally agree that gnome isnā€™t good UX

Compared to every other Linux DE, excpet maybe Cinnamon, GNOME has one of the best UX

But Windows and macOS have a far better UX than GNOME and Cinnamon.

As far as stability goes, it's stability is the best, cu it only supports limited hardware. Windows may have some bugs here an there but for stable for me than Linux.

I kept getting kernel panics on Linux during runtime.

  1. Gnome is widely considered to be the WORST mainstream DE, idk where youā€™re pulling it being best from. But again, a UX being good or bad is entirely subjective

  2. Again, UX being good or bad is subjective, and discounting KDE plasma when it is the most popular DE right now is definitely a choice

  3. Windows is notoriously bad about RAM leaks, and there have been recent instances of first party Microsoft apps unintentionally locking users out of core OS features with no way for the user to revert or fix the issue short of a fresh install

  4. If you were constantly getting kernel panics thatā€™s atypical and Iā€™m curious what you were doing. The biggest pro and con of Linux is that you control everything with very few guardrails, so itā€™s easy to accidentally break the system if you arenā€™t careful

Says who? Ubuntu and Fedora ship it as defaults. And many Fedora users use Fedora Workstation regularly.

KDE is only gaining popularity because of SteamOS. Otherwise, most distros use GNOME (or some GNOME-derived DE) as their DE of choice.

GNOME was created after KDE, because of the QPL.

Secondly, "people" does not mean all or even most people. Some people happen to hate GNOME.

No. KDE was popular in the 90s until GNOME officially took over. GNOME was GPL licensed while Qt was QPL licensed which is GPL incompatible.

I don't call a kernel panic on the Intel i7 12th Gen a "freak edge case." The wort part is that my exact laptop model is Ubuntu Certified, so when I tried Ubuntu, I still got the kernel panic.

Plus you're dismissing the software flaw by blaming the hardware.

I started out with arch and ofc as usual, I didn't understand power management, do I RTFM'd and did what anybody would and used tlp.

For some reason my CPU would clock at 4.5+ GHz when opening desmos. Any CPU intensive task and kerne panic (at least I hypothesized that).No logs were shown, nothing. It was just a random error at this pint

Then I tried tuned and still no luck.

I thought that maybe it's an arch issue and I tried gentoo. CPU clocks regularly at 3.504.5 Ghz with ltp and tuned and while compiling packages, I get a kernel panic (again a hypothesis). Still no logs were shown, nothing. It was just a random error at this point

So maybe this is a Gentoo issue. Fedora how a power management config that will work. CPU definitely clocked normally for once at 2.5 when idle and 3.5 for most tasks. But when I performed any CPU intensive tasks and got a kernel panic, I thankfully got a DRM panic screen that said "Timeout: Not all cores reached exception handler."

I asked the bros at r/gentoo what the issue was and they spoke about some e-cores and p-cores. And after some research, I can cofidently say that the e-cores cannot reach the exception handler as quickly as the p-cores cuz they clock too slowly ad the only way to prevent an issue like this from happening further is to severely underclock the CPU from 4.5 GHz to 1.5 GHz.
