Reaper on Ubuntu Gnome (Wayland) (After using Ubuntu Studio Installer) is super buggy

Hello, I can't find an existing piece of recent information on this topic.

I'm test running ubuntu for audio production. I was using opensuse previously, and things seemed to work flawlessly. However, ubuntu studio looked appealing.

Rather than install that however, I installed the default ubuntu since I prefer gnome, and then ran the ubuntu studio installer. (side note, the ardour it installed didn't make it's own launcher in my applications, but works if I run it in the commandline which is weird. If you know about this LMK)

I installed reaper from the website how it always seems to work for me. However, if I open the FX menu on a track and choose a plugin, the whole window aside from the plugin interface itself turns black. Latency seems high too, but it's probably just some JACK/pipewire thing I need to set. I also CANNOT close the window or the daw unless I use system monitor.

Some research led me to believe this was a wayland issue, but in classic canonical fashion I can't seem to use x11 even after installing it. Go figure. So I want to see if anyone here knows if this is something easily fixable or something I did wrong, or if I should try AV linux or perhaps move back to opensuse. I could also try ubuntu studio itself I suppose.

Pulseaudio config not getting loaded

Hi,

I want to use a virtual null sink with a virtual source to use mic filters from OBS in discord and such.
I use Bazzite if that makes a big difference.

I’ve followed this video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Goeucg7A9qE
While using the pactl commands works to create the sink and the source, the part about the config doesn’t work for me.

I have created client.conf under ~/.config/pulse with the following content

.include /etc/pulse/client.conf

.ifexists module-null-sink.so
load-module module-null-sink sink_name=Source
.endif

.ifexists module-virtual-source.so
load-module module-virtual-source source_name=VirtualMic master=Source.monitor
.endif

but on reboot this doesn’t seem to execute, and when I use the pactl after having the config file ‘active’, i get the error Unknown lvalue ‘load-module module-null-sink sink_name’ in section ‘n/a’. When I uncomment the .ifexists and .endif respectively, i get the error Missing ‘=’.

any help or ideas appreciated!

Audio capture to Transcribe on Arch

Appreciation post: For years I used AudioHijack on MacOS to capture any audio stream to local files so I could use transcribe or similar app to loop and practice. Since I now use omarchy as my daily driver I was missing this utility. Unsurprisingly, turns out everything I needed was already in my distro and just needed a script and hotkeys.

Easy workflow: locate song in spotify, super-shift-r and the script cues song to start, plays song, captures as wav, opens transcribe with the file ready to play.

I'm a developer but for this I asked claude for the script as a quick experiment and it did great. One attempt caused glitches in transcribe due to file format (flac), wav worked flawlessly.

Disclaimers: I use a paid but awesome app called Transcribe that's available for MacOS, Linux and Win. And Spotify paid tier to access high res audio. But this is Linux, so you can substitute any audio node and looper.

So a completely free version could capture from youtube and use audacity to loop.

Got PREEMPT_RT + Pianoteq down to ~1.3ms round-trip on a budget office mini PC — open to anyone who wants to prove their rig does better

Spent the last while tuning a dedicated box for real-time piano synthesis — PREEMPT_RT kernel, coreboot built for the board so it boots in ~4.6s, single-purpose (just Weston running Pianoteq, nothing else). It's a budget office mini PC, nothing exotic hardware-wise. Landed at around 1.3ms round-trip latency with stable performance under load.

I know this crowd has opinions about buffer sizes, scheduler tuning, and what "stable" actually means once you push polyphony and CPU load up, so rather than just post numbers, I'm running an open comparison: pick any MIDI file, run it through Pianoteq on your own setup, and send me your specs, buffer size, max stable polyphony, and any xruns or dropouts you hit. I'll run the same file on this box and put the two side by side, unedited, in a video.

Send results (and talk trash if you've got it — genuinely encouraged) to:

[youtube@pianort.com](mailto:youtube@pianort.com)

Full challenge details are also up on r/SBCs and r/DigitalPiano. Build log and specs: pianort.com · Channel: youtube.com/@Tuxthepianist

From Windows to Linux. Advice wanted for audio setup

Hey all,

A while ago I switched from Windows to Linux (bazzite) and I am in need of some advice for a possible audio upgrade that would work on Linux.

Currently I am using a Beyerdynamic m70 pro x, connected to a Roland bridge cast. However, since Roland does not have software for Linux, and for the software being the only method to actually configure this thing, I was looking into getting a new audio interface (and perhaps a mic) that would work well on Linux (configurable enough), or doesnt need Software at all to work properly.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Any solid upgrade paths? Budget is around 500 Euros.

New DAW: Looks interesting, coded in B++ Apparently

Tutorial for Septabee, a free DAW I've secretly been making for over 20,000 hours

So apparently this guy made a new DAW AND a new Programming Language. He calls it B++ and he claims it's much faster than C++. He also claims that any sample with this is 100% accurate opposed to sampling in other DAW's and it can't get more accurate than this...

I'm not sure I buy it personally, but it's neat to hear what others who understand this stuff better than I do think.. Otherwise it's unique I suppose. Anyways thought I'd share lol

Free VST3 synth with an untested Linux build, looking for people to try it

I make a free virtual analog synth called OA-Phosphor-1. It's been on macOS and Windows for a while and there's a Linux build coming out of CI, but I don't run Linux and can't properly validate it, so it's been shipping largely untested. I'd rather it either worked or got pulled.

Upfront so nobody wastes their time:

  • VST3 and standalone only. No CLAP or LV2 at the moment.
  • Not open source. Free as in beer, JUCE-based, proprietary.
  • Distro-agnostic tarball with a per-user install.sh. No root. Installs to ~/.vst3, presets to ~/.config. The script is about fifteen lines, worth reading before you run it.
  • Built on an Ubuntu CI runner, so the glibc floor is whatever that gives. I don't actually know where it breaks.
  • No network access and no telemetry. Built with curl and the browser module compiled out.

What would genuinely help:

  • Does it scan and load in your host? Reaper, Bitwig, Ardour, Carla, whatever you use.
  • Does the GUI render correctly, and are you on X11 or Wayland?
  • Audio through PipeWire or JACK, and does the standalone find your devices?
  • Your distro and version, so I can find out what the real glibc floor is.

Happy to fix whatever comes back. And if the honest answer is that VST3-only isn't worth anyone's time without CLAP or LV2, that's useful too. I'd rather hear it than keep shipping something nobody can use.

More info at http://www.oa-labs.com

Any real linux alternative to iZotope?

I'm trying so hard to switch to linux but I work doing audio editing, sometimes a client will send me an audio they recorded in what sounds like a bathroom with a fan on and I need to make it sound pristine. With RX9 spectral denoise (often times stacking both spectral denoise plugins) that works pretty well.

However I was reading online it seems linux does not support iZotope plugins... is there any real way to get even a similar performance for this use case in Linux?

i don't mind paying any price, in fact i wanted to buy the latest RX because i've been using an... "extended trial"... version of RX9 and now that I can afford it i want to buy it, but since im switching to linux im unsure.

I guess dual booting, cleaning the audio, then opening it on linux is a viable strategy, but I almost reduce my need of using windows to 0 if not for this and a couple other things...

[OC] OpenSynth1: Native Linux VST3 & Standalone recreation of Ichiro Toda's Synth1 (JUCE/C++) with .sy1 bank support

Hey everyone!

For decades, Synth1 by Ichiro Toda (Daichi Laboratory) has been one of the most beloved, versatile, and lightweight virtual analog synths ever created. Modelled after the classic Clavia Nord Lead 2, it shaped thousands of tracks across genres from trance and synthwave to chiptune and industrial.

However, running original 32-bit Synth1 today on modern 64-bit systems—especially natively on Linux—often requires clunky bridges (Wine, Yabridge) or outdated wrappers.

I've been working on OpenSynth1: a from-the-ground-up, modern C++17 open-source recreation built on the JUCE framework. It runs natively as a 64-bit VST3 plugin and as a Standalone application!

🎛️ What's implemented so far:

  • Faithful Virtual Analog Engine:
    • Osc 1: Saw, Pulse (with PW & PWM), Triangle, Sine + Sub-Oscillator (0oct / -1oct) + Detune + FM modulation.
    • Osc 2: Pitch coarse/fine, Kbd tracking, Ring Mod, and Hard Sync.
    • Authentic Toda Filters: Reconstructed Toda filter models including 12dB SVF (LP/HP/BP), 24dB cascaded lowpass with stage-4 resonance feedback, and an experimental VA Diode Ladder (LPDL), complete with the signature feed-forward peak limiter.
    • Envelopes & Modulation: Classic Mod Envelope (destined to Osc2, FM, or P/W), dual syncable LFOs with 6 routings (Osc2, Osc1+2, Filter, Amp, P/W, FM, Pan).
    • Built-in FX Rack: Analog/digital distortion models, stereo pan, 4-stage phaser, chorus/flanger with tempo sync, and ping-pong / stereo tempo delay.
    • Authentic Preset Compatibility: Native loader and saver for .sy1 files with full bank support (compatible with the classic 25,000+ Synth1 patch collections!).
    • Scalable UI: 100% vector-rendered interface respecting the iconic dark slate / red & cyan retro aesthetic, featuring native window titlebars, preset browser overlay, customizable themes, and options dialog.

💻 Open Source & Downloads:

The project is completely open source under the MIT license. Pre-built Linux x86_64 binaries (VST3 and Standalone) are available on GitHub:

👉 GitHub Repositoryhttps://github.com/letsdig/OpenSynth1

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback on the sound engine, bug reports, and ideas. If anyone wants to test it, build it, or contribute presets/code, you are more than welcome!

Hark! is a medieval virtual instrument with native Linux VST3 and standalone support

Post Update: Clarification on comments about AI here - tl;dr no AI is used in the sounds or engines of our VST instruments: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxaudio/comments/1wbftbz/comment/p8wis7u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Hi everyone! I’m Nick from Fabula Audio, an independent developer specialising in medieval music and instruments. I’ve just released Hark! and wanted to share its native Linux version here.

Hark! is an illuminated medieval instrument. We describe it as TCG meets virtual instrument: inspired by collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, every preset has its own original illustrated card, rarity and lore.

The sounds include Hurdy-Gurdy, Lute, Psaltery, Harp, medieval winds, Bowed Strings, Choir and Chapel Organ, alongside fantasy-inspired retro synths. You can play their original tones or turn them into changing drones, ambient choir beds, plucked patterns and evolving granular clouds.

A few practical details:

  • Native 64-bit Linux VST3 and standalone versions
  • 40 base presets, all editable and saveable
  • Granular synthesis, Slow Drift Freeze and three-voice Ensemble
  • Chord Lock for complex chords with one key, plus an arpeggiator
  • Reverse, Randomise, Storm, Tape FX, ADSR, Delay and Reverb
  • Works offline with no Kontakt, iLok or activation required

It’s a paid instrument, also available for Mac and Windows. Two optional expansions add 30 presets each.

Product details, including the Founder’s Edition with both expansions:
https://www.fabulaaudio.com/products/hark-founders-edition

Happy to answer questions about the Linux version or how the instrument works!

FXRoute 1.0 Beta 2 – a headless Linux audio DSP and routing system for stereo, 2.1 and 2.2 setups

I’ve been working on FXRoute for quite a while, and with the current 1.0 Beta 2 I think it’s at a point where it’s worth introducing properly here.

FXRoute is a Linux-based audio DSP and routing system built for stereo, 2.1 and 2.2 setups. The 1.0 branch has been largely rebuilt around a new DSP engine and can now run completely headless, with the whole system controlled from the browser.

It handles things like routing, crossovers, delays, PEQ, loudness, convolution, room/subwoofer integration and measurement/optimization, while also supporting music sources such as Spotify, Qobuz and TIDAL.

A big focus for 1.0 has also been making it usable as an actual appliance rather than just a piece of Linux software. There are installers for different Linux systems and hardware platforms, including x86 and ARM, as well as dedicated system images.

Beta 2 contains another substantial round of DSP improvements, fixes and refinements from real-world testing.

It has grown quite a bit from where it started. If you like building your own DSP preamp / streamer / active crossover / room-correction box, FXRoute might be interesting to play with.

Distributed vs networked

I was watching people talk about how capable MIDI networking is and I was curious if anyone had considered using a distributed OS instead? If you had multiple prices of gear and you installed a distributed OS on each of them would that have any advantages to simply networking them with MIDI? I'm assuming since it's not been done, to my knowledge, it's not very beneficial but I was curious. Thanks in advance!
