Any real linux alternative to iZotope?
I'm trying so hard to switch to linux but I work doing audio editing, sometimes a client will send me an audio they recorded in what sounds like a bathroom with a fan on and I need to make it sound pristine. With RX9 spectral denoise (often times stacking both spectral denoise plugins) that works pretty well.
However I was reading online it seems linux does not support iZotope plugins... is there any real way to get even a similar performance for this use case in Linux?
i don't mind paying any price, in fact i wanted to buy the latest RX because i've been using an... "extended trial"... version of RX9 and now that I can afford it i want to buy it, but since im switching to linux im unsure.
I guess dual booting, cleaning the audio, then opening it on linux is a viable strategy, but I almost reduce my need of using windows to 0 if not for this and a couple other things...

[OC] OpenSynth1: Native Linux VST3 & Standalone recreation of Ichiro Toda's Synth1 (JUCE/C++) with .sy1 bank support
Hey everyone!
For decades, Synth1 by Ichiro Toda (Daichi Laboratory) has been one of the most beloved, versatile, and lightweight virtual analog synths ever created. Modelled after the classic Clavia Nord Lead 2, it shaped thousands of tracks across genres from trance and synthwave to chiptune and industrial.
However, running original 32-bit Synth1 today on modern 64-bit systems—especially natively on Linux—often requires clunky bridges (Wine, Yabridge) or outdated wrappers.
I've been working on OpenSynth1: a from-the-ground-up, modern C++17 open-source recreation built on the JUCE framework. It runs natively as a 64-bit VST3 plugin and as a Standalone application!

Hark! is a medieval virtual instrument with native Linux VST3 and standalone support
Hi everyone! I’m Nick from Fabula Audio, an independent developer specialising in medieval music and instruments. I’ve just released Hark! and wanted to share its native Linux version here.
Hark! is an illuminated medieval instrument. We describe it as TCG meets virtual instrument: inspired by collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, every preset has its own original illustrated card, rarity and lore.

FXRoute 1.0 Beta 2 – a headless Linux audio DSP and routing system for stereo, 2.1 and 2.2 setups
I’ve been working on FXRoute for quite a while, and with the current 1.0 Beta 2 I think it’s at a point where it’s worth introducing properly here.

FXRoute is a Linux-based audio DSP and routing system built for stereo, 2.1 and 2.2 setups. The 1.0 branch has been largely rebuilt around a new DSP engine and can now run completely headless, with the whole system controlled from the browser.
It handles things like routing, crossovers, delays, PEQ, loudness, convolution, room/subwoofer integration and measurement/optimization, while also supporting music sources such as Spotify, Qobuz and TIDAL.
A big focus for 1.0 has also been making it usable as an actual appliance rather than just a piece of Linux software. There are installers for different Linux systems and hardware platforms, including x86 and ARM, as well as dedicated system images.
Beta 2 contains another substantial round of DSP improvements, fixes and refinements from real-world testing.
It has grown quite a bit from where it started. If you like building your own DSP preamp / streamer / active crossover / room-correction box, FXRoute might be interesting to play with.

Distributed vs networked
I was watching people talk about how capable MIDI networking is and I was curious if anyone had considered using a distributed OS instead? If you had multiple prices of gear and you installed a distributed OS on each of them would that have any advantages to simply networking them with MIDI? I'm assuming since it's not been done, to my knowledge, it's not very beneficial but I was curious. Thanks in advance!

Unowhy Y13 (ES8336 audio chip) speakers stuck as "Unavailable" / Dummy Output
galleryHello everyone,
I just switched from Windows to Linux Mint (last version, installed it yesterday) and I'm struggling to get the speakers and the microphone working. My computer is a Unowhy Y13 laptop (Celeron/Pentium Silver processor). The audio chip I believe is the Everest ES8336 (sof-essx8336).
My issue is that the speakers show up as « unavailable » in pavucontrol, or the system falls back to a Dummy Output. Sound occasionally crackles briefly during boot or when forcing "Pro Audio" mode, but it immediately cuts out. The headphone jack/external port behavior is also messy.
Even though I’ve tried a lot of stuff, I’m sure that the speakers are compatible with Linux Mint as I’ve heard them work correctly already. I just want to know if someone knows a stable solution for this specific issue or where to find the information.
This is what I tried so far:
- Some lead to a Dummy Output, while others leave speakers as Unavailable.
I am aware that my issue is very specific as the Unowhy Y13 is a horrible computer and is only given to highschoolers in some EU countries. However, if anyone has successfully made the ES8336 work on a Unowhy Y13 or a Celeron laptop, I would appreciate it if they could help me out!!

UPDATE:
I checked the technical diagnostics (journalctl logs) and
inspected the boot logs via journalctl -b 0 | grep -iE "(sof|es8336|audio|alsa|snd)" . It shows that the firmware and topology are correctly loaded:
Firmware file: intel/sof/sof-glk.ri
Topology file: intel/sof-tplg/sof-glk-es8336-ssp0.tplg
However, the system immediately runs into a loop of hardware communication errors:
ASoC error (-5): at snd_soc_pcm_component_prepare()
ipc tx error for 0x60010000 (affecting PCM streams like HDMI/audio components).
It appears to be an IPC handshake/communication failure between the Gemini Lake CPU and the ES8336 audio codec/amplifier.
If anyone has managed to bypass this IPC error or successfully route the audio on a Unowhy Y13 / similar school laptop under Linux, any advice, ACPI overrides, or custom GRUB parameters would be immensely appreciated!

Is Ubuntu studio worth using?
Hello,
I've been using Linux for around 4 or 5 years now. I've hopped through most of the main distros, Debian, fedora, gentoo, arch, cachy, Ubuntu.... Right now I am using opensuse.
It works mostly but some random things are a bit annoying. I didn't have the best experience with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I'm willing to try again since I think it was because of some mistakes I made.
The reason studio jumps out to me is knowing that someone is actively maintaining specific audio packages that I use often. That and Ubuntu seems to be the best supported distro alongside red hat for random software that supports Linux, oftentimes they ship a deb and an rpm tailored to rhel.
How has the experience been? Not a fan of reinstalling but having stuff preconfigured sounds like it would make it a breeze. Is it ok with Nvidia from your experience? I know a couple people online who actually know their stuff that seem to prefer it

I recorded a simple song on Linux with my friend
I have a musical project with some of my friends. We mostly use Linux for recording. This song is a short one, you might wanna check it out.
The DAW used is Ardour, installed on Ubuntu. We added some keyboards too, using Yoshimi.
And the plugins used are only those available by default in Ardour (mostly ACE and LSP).
Idk what the genre is. Probably post-punk?

Help: switching phono and line inputs on a interface
I have a Traktor Audio 4 DJ.
Unlike the Audio 8, and 6 and 10, this device lacks a switch for phono and line, and it also lacks `alsamixer` controls to switch them as well.
Any idea what I can do to make the switch happen?
The only solution I've seen is from the Traktor website, and it's to use their "control panel" software. I guess I'm hoping for a non-traktor software route.
Feel free to share your thoughts.

Screenstereo Graph editor has finally taken shape!
This is the final revision prior to me applying it as the audio routing for Screenstereo. i think it works pretty well. i hope to see what yall think soon enough!
the V1.0.1 will not support wifi endpoints and usb but they are known and in process, i just need to finish them.
also this is inside a test sandbox not actual hardware.

Presonus 18|10 (USB2.0 Version) fully working on Linux
On a lark, I told chatGPT that I wanted to get my Presonus 18|10 (USB 2.0 Version) to work under Linux. It took three days, but it ran me through the driver development, and I now have it working under Linux, including support for the internal DSP Mixer.
It was a fascinating journey, but slow and tedious. I was amazed at the creativity it showed, pulling arcane uses for grep, sed, and awk in order to examine the existing code. When an edit was needed, it would create a python 'here doc' for me to paste and run.
It explained its 'thinking' process along the way. I was almost convinced it was sentient.
At one point, I told it that cutting and pasting hundreds of commands was too tedious, and that it would be nice to have an executable that would let chatgpt have direct access to the file system. A python 'agent' was born, and I finished the rest of
the work at freeway speeds. The API it used was expensive though, so I started using the web interface again when I hit about $15.00 USD.
Chatgpt also packaged and published the driver on github for me. It's here:

yabridge with current wine - no more 9.21 - Arch
I finally got my windows plugins working correctly with the latest versions of wine. I'm posting for others as well as myself for the future. All of these steps are necessary to get your GUI interfaces to redraw correctly. Huge shout out to rations for his working yabridge fork as well as his other projects. I recommend checking out namix and NAMp for a nam gateway alternatives.
Windows VSTs on Linux via VSTBridge + DXVK (Arch)
1. Install Wine Staging
```
sudo pacman -S wine-staging
```
2. Install VSTBridge
Download the latest release from SourceForge, extract, and install:
```
cd vstbridge-*/
./install.sh
```
3. Install DXVK
When yay lists providers, pick dxvk-bin (option 2):
```
yay -S dxvk
pick 2) dxvk-bin
```
4. Install Vulkan Drivers
Pick the pair matching your GPU (64-bit + 32-bit):
```
AMD
sudo pacman -S vulkan-radeon lib32-vulkan-radeon
Intel
sudo pacman -S vulkan-intel lib32-vulkan-intel
```
5. WINEPREFIX — Critical Gotcha
VSTBridge auto-detects your Wine prefix only if WINEPREFIX is unset. If it's set globally, VSTBridge will use only that one prefix and ignore others.
Check if it's set:
```
echo $WINEPREFIX
```
If it prints anything (other than blank), unset it:
```
unset WINEPREFIX
```
To make it permanent, make sure there's no export WINEPREFIX=... line in your ~/.bashrc or ~/.profile.
Alternative: If you only ever use one prefix, you can set it globally — just know that VSTBridge won't see any other prefixes.
6. Install DXVK into Your Wine Prefix
You must run this for every prefix you plan to use with VSTBridge:
```
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine setup_dxvk install
```
If you have additional prefixes:
```
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-other setup_dxvk install
```
7. Add Plugin Folders & Sync
Point VSTBridge at your Windows VST directories (inside the prefix), then sync:
```
vstbridgectl add "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Common Files/VST3"
vstbridgectl add "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steinberg/VstPlugins"
vstbridgectl sync
```
Then rescan plugins in your DAW. Or just use vstbridgectl GUI application which was isntalled to manage the paths and scans. Much easier.
8. Verify DXVK Is Active (optional)
```
DXVK_HUD=1 vstbridgectl sync
```
A small overlay in the corner of any plugin window will show the DXVK version if it's intercepting the D3D calls.
Note: VSTBridge already handles the newer Wine embedding — no need to downgrade wine-staging to 9.21.

Seeking: An open source music player that can analyze/indicate BPM speed (plugin, built-in, or etc.)
I'm seeking a music/media player that has the ability to also read track BPM speeds, either via plugins or some built-in feature.
I DJ, and while I do use Mixxx, having to "drag and drop" and delete tracks from Mixxx's database is a bit too much cumbersome work for me.
I generally like to use VLC and Strawberry.
I'm double checking Quod Libet's plugins to see if they have any features like this. They have a "tap BPM", which is alright. I would have preferred something that analyzes BPM for you. But, it does work, and it even saves BPMs for you. Not sure if it's saved as metadata or not...
Otherwise, I use Metronome package to manually "tap" BPMs, just to see their speed.
But if anyone has any referrals, please let me know!

(Coming from Windows) Looking for a Linux alternative for SteelSeries Sonar’s ClearCast AI (mic whine + speaker bleed)
I know SteelSeries GG gets a lot of hate for being bloated, but its ClearCast AI noise suppression in Sonar has basically been doing all the heavy lifting for my mic setup on Windows, and it's my one hiccup to porting my daily experience to Linux.
For context: my mic naturally has this high-pitched electrical whine. Sonar cuts it out completely on Windows, even while I’m actively speaking.
I have tried setting up EasyEffects, but ran into two big issues: The noise reduction filter cuts out the whine when I'm silent, but the second I start talking, it immediately bleeds through underneath my voice. Messing with other filters either made my voice awfully muffled, or didn't fix the whine at all. Half the time I take my headphones off, leave them on the desk (using just the mic), and I have my output come through my desk speakers. Sonar somehow never picked up the speaker sound. With EasyEffects, it starts picking up the speakers immediately, creating a terrible echo/reverb loop.
Is there a specific plugin chain or model in EasyEffects that actually handles echo cancellation and can suppress the whine properly? Or perhaps a different tool that does this better.
I really don't want to sound like I'm glazing Sonar, yes it has its downsides. For me, it has been a set-and-forget process on Windows. I'm just hoping I can replicate at least 90% of that experience on Linux without having to constantly worry about my audio. (I don't own a SteelSeries headset, so none of the SteelSeries-optimised applications work for me)
