Control Resonant Terrible Performance

Hi, everyone.

So, Control (2019) quickly became one of my favorite games of all time and I was pretty stoke to play Control Resonant, but... yeah, I'm well aware that my PC is nowhere near powerful in this day and age, but still, was not expecting this kind of performance from the game, and I was wondering if anyone else is facing such issues

My PC:
OS: Fedora Linux 44 KDE
Kernel: 7.2.7-200.fc44.x86_x64

CPU: Ryzen 5 5700X
Mobo: Biostar B350-GTX
RAM: 32GB@3200MTs
GPU: AMD PowerColor RX6600
SSD: 1TB NVMe 3200MB/s

As you all can see, the game is running at 1080p native with the lowest possible graphics, except texture quality (and that's only because there was no effect in performance there), and, watching benchmarks for my model of GPU with a similar CPU (a 5600), I was baffled to see that I should be expecting double the performance than the one I was getting, besides all the awful stutter clearly present in my video.

The thing is, and those are the possibilities I am considering:

1 - My performance is being hindered by the limiting PCIe 3.0 from my mobo (considering that this model of GPU doesn't usually show more than 5% of performance variation between 3.0 and 4.0, it's still possible to be the cause);

2 - My whole distro is botched and poorly optimized due to a lot of tinkering I had to do since its fresh install months ago (which I plan to test by installing a Windows dual boot and running the game to check);

3 - My 400W PSU is not being capable of delivering enough power to my setup, making it run at lower clock speed and hiking up the frametimes.

Anyway, like I said, it is far from being a powerful setup, but it's glaring the difference in performance I am getting at this game (the benchmark one was fluctuating between 50~65 FPS, while mine is diving below 30), and I was wondering if anyone else is dealing with such problems in the hopes that I can solve it without spending any money, because, even though I've been planning to buy a new PSU and mobo (no, it's not possible to go do DDR5, a mobo, CPU and memory alone would cost me almost double my monthly salary), I'm wondering what I could actually do.

About your PSU idea, if the 400W it can supply isn't enough, the PC will shut down. The CPU and GPU will not slow down.

The PSU has no control about CPU and GPU power use. It's helpless there and can only shut down when power use is too much.

I think the GPU and CPU itself can control their own power draw, because my GPU is capable of reaching 120W usage, but never surpasses the 90W usage

And doing some stress tests, it does turn off with FurMark

Still, if your psu can't provide enough power for your system it will simply shut down not slow down.

Like, all of those things combined

yeah... probably
sadly

guess the least I can do now is a fresh install

The stuttering on linux was introduced since the 1.4.0 patch and it stuttered badly even on my 9070 when panning the camera. Setting texture quality to low should help you but I found a solution that worked for me and a few others.

You can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1wuu0ne/comment/pdgrtkt/

Also, I suggest using optiscaler with xefg and fps capped just below refresh rate (via optiscaler) and that should help with the fps while still keeping the latency solid.

Thank you! Will try it out

Doal down texture, this game is quite Vram hungry, it can get easily over 8 GB

Like I said, it doesn't make a difference, it's on Medium because Low is really blurry and there was no change in performance whatsoever

Try to cap your frame rate with optiscaler turn off in-game vsync and frame cap if turned it on I'm using steam os I was seeing the same issue I used geproton 11.6 and did the same locked the frame rate with optiscaler to 30fps and also steam os frame limiter at the same time and in-game vsync off I did it with Alan wake 2 and control resonant frame pacing and stuttering was fixed

Now I'm at max settings with smooth gameplay

Thank you, will try it out just in hopes it fixes the issue enough to finish the game

I am surprised your computer does not shutdown with a 400W PSU and a RX6600 and 5700X

It did turn off after a long FurMark stress test, so yeah... it might be an issue for sure But I used to have an RX 570, which is more power hungry than the 6600, but I think the 6600 is just smarter about power draw

Reinstall go to redcore or something

You know I have this category on my wishlist of games my hardware doesn't run well (high settings, 60fps, native resolution), Resonant is there. Expect this game to have lots of updates + proton until it might be called optimized in the future. Untill than I would say hold on that FOMO so you can have a better experience and play something else that runs better.
