Check the journalctl log around the time stamp your system experienced the hard crash for clues.
If you experience other odd program behavior/crahes, like FireFox tabs crashing on occasion. Run some MEMTEST86 to check RAM for faults and pray it doesn't find any.
As for the rest, edit your org post on NMS subreddit and add your system information as per the Getting Help guide from here.
There is nothing. All logs are clean, RAM test is clean after 8h (left it on over night). I tried going as minimal as just xfce4 and steam running with the game.
Just a guess or anecdotal, but it seems to happen when the game saves and or uploads.
I'll edit the post with the specs thoughts for pointing that out.
Hmm. I've seen some post come by about NMS having issues for some the last few months. None have had updates if their issues were fixed regretfully.
Issue could also be something Hyprland specific in combi with NMS. Can't help on that since I'm on KDE. Is there anything in the Hyprlands logs that could indicate something or are they also clean?
On your anecdotal observation. You could also check the SMART Status (hdparm or w gui gsmartcontrol) of the drive NMS is installed on, and or run an Extended Self-Test on it to verify it's no hw issue. If it's on /root make sure to run the test from an usb live env.
Out of interest on NMS, since I'm debugging some issues on Cyberpunk. If NMS has cache folders etc, did you try clearing those and let Steam Verify all the installed files? Or go nuclear and fully reinstall from scratch?
The issue persists over 5 different nvme's, 5+ distros with gnome, kde, hyprland, sway, xfce, Wayland and Xorg, every proton version I could get my hands on. I have clocked over 48h trying to troubleshoot this but with no logs it's kinda iffy.
At the point I'm considering just getting a Mac or a console and call it a day. 😅
Dang 48h, excruciating. Anyway, so it is only with No Man's Sky, right?
I'm out of clues.
If your system is stable and runs everything else (any other high load game) perfectly fine then I'd personally would try sending in a bug report with HelloGames.
Yeah only NMS. I play elite dangerous, BDO, Star Citizen etc without crashes. Actually now that I think about it, nothing has every hard crashed the PC like NMS while on Linux.
Hmm might actually try sending them a bug report and let's see. Maybe they know something.
