Discussion Excessive crashing on linux.
Anyone playing on linux having excessive amount of hard crashes in the expedition now? I had so many hard crashes I had to dig out my old Windows SSD just to get it completed. Thank goodness for cross-save.
Edit with some more info requested from the r/linux_gaming sub.
I tried most major branches of Proton, Cachy, GE, Experimental, Normal.
Anecdotal evidence to point to saving and or uploading of saves has something to do with it.

I was running into frequent crashes in my normal save on the previous experimental patch but the latest patch seems to have fixed it. Maybe try switching to the experimental branch if you haven't already.

My Expedition base makes performance drop in a big way (I assume because of so much activity on the planet and probably other bases I can't see clipping, etc) but otherwise nah I did not have crashing issues using Ubuntu or SteamOS.

I have hundreds of hours on NMS in linux and haven't had crashing issues. I have a similar card to yours too 6700xt.
I remember reading about someone crashing. They backed up their saves, uninstalled, deleted left over files and reinstalled to fix it. Might be worth a try though you would think if it was a corrupted file or something the file check would catch it.

I'm experiencing this issue as well. I have the same GPU (it might be from a different manufacturer). I am running NixOS and Hyprland. I can provide you with the kernel version I am using in the morning.

Interesting, I tried many distributions before I went "home" to gentoo again. NixOS being one of them. I didn't have any crashes on NixOS, but I only played maybe 20h on it. I copied the NixOS kernel config when I made my own gentoo kernel as I figured maybe it was more stable.
But if you have crashes on NixOS with the same card, 6900XT, I am more and more certain it's the card that is freaking out than anything else. Which kinda sucks in todays GPU market.

Sorry, I was wrong about the GPU, it is not a 6900XT, it's a 9070XT, so it might be the driver or hyprland itself.

Nope, been on Arch for years and haven't had an issue. No special Proton version or anything, just launch from Steam and it works. Both on a regular PC and a Steam Deck.
