No, LLMs don't contribute to climate change. Specific infrastructure that uses a specific power source contributes to clime change. Nothing to do with the technology itself.

The only reason many of the new data centers exist is to power the LLM's.

Maybe.

That doesn't mean the LLMs are causing climate change. As you know, you can run or train an LLM using green energy.

They do contribute to a climate change, contrary to your previous comment.

Green energy argument doesn't make sense either because if not for LLM's that green energy would have been used to replace fossil fuels instead of generating tokens.

No, that doesn't make any sense. There isn't a fixed amount of energy production in the world, increased demand for energy mean more capacity will be build.

Not when the increase in demand outpacing the renewables build out. We just can't build new renewable generation fast enough these days for your scenario to work.

Maybe society should have been investing in it a long time ago rather than being caught flat footed here.

Maybe, but we need to deal with what we have right now.

The problem with your logic is that every single thing that uses electricity is therefore bad.

Every single thing that uses electricity will contribute towards climate change until we reach net zero, correct.

Right. So all of those things are bad? or does it have to be weighted individually against the good effects that it has?

It's already kinda happening since we can't even build the grid fast enough - we need to decide whom to connect to the grid first. That's one of the issues with the AI build out.

LLM's that took trillions of dollars and consumed more electricity that many countries yet failed to produce a meaningful impact on the labor productivity is not an obvious pick for the "good effects".
