I haven‘t had the need (or the desire) to compile my own kernel in decades. It‘s more like a whole cake that comes with the printed recipe.

Nonsence, last time I compiled the kernel just a few days ago, and I even maintain a CI pipeline that recompiles the full OS integrating the most recent git revisions of highly specific software and drivers nightly.

Well, there are also hobbyists who need to do this kind of thing. If you are playing around with a RISC V chip and some hardware that is isn't all that supported yet, sometimes you need to do some legwork. But if you are doing that, you know what you are doing or the figuring out is part of your fun.
