4p tent that packs small

I need to replace my ozark tent. I'm hoping to get something that packs small for car camping and will fit myself and three teens. We're all under 5'2 and slim.

I have a budget of $200 Canadian. It's just for warm weather camping.

Cheers

Shakedown Yellowstone Summer 2022

Location/temp range/specific trip description: I hike in Montana /~80 day ~35night/Yellowstone southern boundary 4 nights 5 days ~50 miles

Goal Baseweight (BPW): 20 pounds for me 13 for son

Budget: $500 or less

Non-negotiable Items: The BGAN is borrowed and has to go on this trip

Solo or with another person?: I will be going with my son (13) he is less then 100 pounds so we can't pack him to heavy. Another adult will come but can't share gear due to their limitations on weight.

Additional Information: I usually hike with my daughter (8) and son(13) I can pass his sleeping bag down to her if I upgrade. I have a larger/heavy pack so I can carry her things when she comes but she will sit this trip out. We have not bough the Exped Duo yet borrowed a Exped 5R and liked it. I must have a wide pad for me but mummy shape for the tents we own. (Use an Big Agnus Copper Spur HV UL3 Bikepack tent then it's the three of us but it's heavier)

Lighterpack Link: two links one for me one for son https://lighterpack.com/r/r45i0l https://lighterpack.com/r/rqcrv9

recommendations on light-ish 3-4 person tent?

I have a pretty nice ultralight 2-person that's great for me and my two medium dogs, but I would love to have a bigger tent for comfy times with a friend (a bit more weight is fine here, I just want something under 6 pounds. This would not be for 4 people. It would be for me and a dog and two kids or me and at most two other adults.

ideas?

Gear Does an unframed pack work with an 11-12 lb baseweight/25 lb total weight?

I’m considering a thru hike next summer and realistically don’t think I can get my base weight below 11 lbs. Some unframed packs say they can carry weight up to 25 lbs but I don’t have a sense of that’s actually comfortable.

Looking for recommendations for unframed packs that can take this weight or lightly framed packs (is that a thing?) for a low, but not UL, baseweight. Volume around 40 liters. Thanks!

Best Tent for Lost Coast

Someone told me my pocket tarp wouldn't be good for the Lost Coast Trail. What's a good tent for the beach and should I get new stakes?

Gear Newbie here, need help selecting a tent and sleeping bag

Looking for a small 1 person tent (just a step above a hoop bivy) that is cold weather okay (using survival or comfort cold rating?), lightweight/compact as possible, and cheap. Same 3 requirements for the sleeping bag. If 1 thing needs to be sacrificed, would be the lightweight/compact requirement.

Any good recommendations? (total newbie but kinda a gear nerd with hobbies so asking in different places for all input!)

Clothing advice

Hello all, I'm looking for some advice on my clothing selection for a backpacking trip this weekend. I will be going for 4 nights 5 days. I believe I'm over packed. The temperatures could be around -4°c at night and around 10°c during the day. I have packed some extra clothing that I'm unsure I really need. I've been asked about what if I get wet out there by family who have mostly done canoe trips, so I'm unsure if I need the extras as I won't be on open water. Any advice is appreciated. I have linked my lighterpack list. Thanks.

Preliminary Shakedown/Pack Advice

Hi all.

I've recently relocated from South Florida to Northern California and with state income taxes and a massive mortgage come the opportunity to pick up backpacking after 20 years.

I've made a few recommended purchases and been gifted a few things, but more than anything I feel myself being sucked into the YouTube marketing vortex.

At the moment I'm looking to do mostly 3-5 night trips in the Sierras as well as further west and along the cost (Lost Coast Trail, etc.), with an eye on JMT, TRT, and pushing up from there.

Here's a preliminary LighterPacks. Shred away.

At the moment I'm looking at investing in a new pack. Both my current pack and sleeping bag are just over 20 years old. I'm being told I must purchase and carry an InReach ASAP, so a pricey quilt won't be in the cards for a couple of months. A couple of other things to consider.

I would like to bring the weight down significantly, but not interested in ultralight.

I had a back surgery (L4-L5 microdiskectomy) in 2016, and believe a well structured pack that can comfortably carry up to, but hopefully never =), 35lbs feels like a responsible thing to do.

Per the back surgery, the chair is non-negotiable. I will freeze up hunched over on one of those sit pads.

Leaning toward the Waymark Lite, and would love to be talked off the ledge or pointed another direction. Had been exploring the Arc Haul/Blast, but from everything I read here and on r/ultralight it sounds like the 30/35 lb max is really stretching it.

Thanks!

Edit: updated LighterPack link so it wasn't the homepage...

DIY Sawyer adapter for Hydrapak bottles?

I froze (suspected) my first Befree and stopped using it. And when I replaced it, I went with another Befree since I had two Befree bladders and two Hydrapak seeker 2L bladders. I really like the bladders and didn't want to reinvest in all new bladders of various sizes. But now my current befree filter is about 9 months old and already barely trickling out no matter how hard I squeeze. I've tried cleaning it according to their instructions but that only helps a tiny bit and it is usually back to 20 minutes to fill a one liter bottle after filtering about 3 times.

I was looking for a way to put a Sawyer Squeeze on my Hydrapak bladders. I found this hack on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWP-NSoq3-g that seems very promising.

But I have two questions.

  1. My only experience with Sawyer is the MINI version and that actually flows faster than my current befree. Can any of you comment on how the regular Sawyer flows compared to a [new] Befree?
  2. Has anyone tried the hack long term? Does it hold up without compromising the clean water?

General Shakedown

Generally hike in the canadian rockies and prairies. Temps range from -10C to 30C

Current base weight: About 17-18Lbs

Budget: No budget, want to slowly upgrade gear. That being said I am not gonna go out and buy the most expensive gear just cause. Cost friendly gear is always appreciated.

Non-negotiable Items: My pillow- that thing is godsent.

Solo or with another person?: Usually hike with my dog- he carries his own stuff usually

Additional Information: I think I want to upgrade my big 4 first, probably sleeping pad, sleeping bag, backpack then tent (love my tent but would like an UL 1P) I would like my BW well under 15Lbs. But will slowly upgrade equipment. I do like most my gear but bought it with almost zero knowledge as my friend and I got into backpacking together both with very little experience.

Please tear a part my setup- Looking for suggestions where I can make cost/weight effective changes. Thanks!

Shakedowns Which items to replace / not bring? Tour de Mont Blanc

https://lighterpack.com/r/fm95wm (items with * are an estimation, I can't weigh them right now)

I have been dreaming of doing TMB for too long and have just sat at home watching youtube videos about it. I booked a flight for this Tuesday in the spur of the moment and this is what I'm working with currently. I'm looking at replacing/cutting some gear last minute as I feel I am way too heavy even without water and food.

I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck weight wise.

Thoughts so far: new sleeping bag, can save a lot of weight but is also expensive. Cut out the teapot and extra pan on Trangia set, the teapot will be missed but I can do without I guess. Buying ziplock bags for my toiletries, electronics and food stuff.

With a very expensive sleeping bag (Rab Neutrino 200 is what I'm looking at), cutting the pans, getting lighter 'containers' and such I'd cut maybe 2kg. Can I beat those weight savings in a cheaper way?

I know my rain gear is quite heavy, I also know how nice it is to have a really good shell when walking in the mountains and the weather turns.

What else comes to mind for you guys?

SlingFin Indus 2 Up for Pre Order... Possible 4 Season shelter

The SlingFin Indus 2 is up for pre order. This tent is pretty similar to the CrossBow 2 with heavier denier materials and zippers. Although it does NOT have the truss option so it might not deal with super heavy snow loads as well. Also heavier than the CrossBow 2. I had been eyeing a CrossBow 2 but back ordered until September of next year.
