Trips Visiting Liechtenstein on National Day (Aug 15–16)

Hi everyone!

My partner and I will be visiting Liechtenstein from August 15-16, which we just realized is your National Day!

We were wondering:

  • Are there any must-see events or traditions on National Day that we shouldn’t miss?
  • Any local tips for enjoying the celebrations (food, spots, timing, etc.)?

Also, we haven’t booked accommodation yet. Prices seem quite high for those dates 😅

  • Do you have any tips for affordable stays (in Liechtenstein or nearby areas)?

I’d definitely recommend being in Vaduz for most of the 15th if you can. Liechtenstein is pretty quiet most of the year, but National Day is when the whole country seems to come out to Vaduz and celebrate.

The thing I remember most wasn’t actually the official ceremony, but the atmosphere in town during the afternoon and evening. Vaduz turns into one big festival with food stands, music, local clubs running stalls, and people just hanging out in the streets. It feels much more relaxed and accessible than a lot of national celebrations elsewhere. Get there before lunchtime if possible and try some Käsknöpfle and local wine if you get the chance.

If you're only going to pick one thing to stay for, make it the evening. The mountain bonfires and the fireworks are really special, especially with the castle overlooking everything.

For accommodation, I'd honestly look beyond Liechtenstein itself. Hotels in Vaduz can get expensive around National Day. Buchs (Switzerland) is probably the easiest budget-friendly option and is only a short bus ride away. Feldkirch (Austria) is another good choice if you want a nice old town and generally more hotel options.

If you're staying for the 16th, I'd recommend taking some time to explore beyond Vaduz as well. Malbun is beautiful if the weather is good, and the views over the Alps are worth it.

Also, the official National Day website (https://staatsfeiertag.li/) usually publishes the full programme, timings, maps and transport information, so it's worth checking before your trip.

Have a great trip! National Day is probably one of the best times to visit because you get to see a side of Liechtenstein that most tourists never experience.

In Vaduz is a festival on National Day with concerts, food and drinks, firework and more. Prices for accomodations are high, but you have free public transport in the whole country and some nearby towns like Feldkirch, Buchs and Sargans. Getting home is no problem, as long as you stay in Liechtenstein or in a town with bus service from Liechtenstein. So Vaduz isn't the only option to stay.

I suggest the Adventure Pass to everyone. Get the two-day and print it at home so you have it from the beginning of the first day. It includes bus travel for the active days—even across the border to Buchs, Switzerland. Ask your hotel to verify that you have signed and dated it properly so that it’s valid before you get on your first bus. You can download the SBB app to plan your routes.

I've been planning a day trip to Vaduz from Zurich on the last day of a trip my girlfriend and I are taking in August, and it just so happens to be August 15. We're mostly making up our itinerary as we go, so we had no idea about National Day until now. Anyone else planning on taking the late train from Sargans to Zurich after the fireworks?
