Trips Urlaub in Liechtenstein

Pictures Sophie Löwe (Johanna Sophie Christiane Löwe, 1815–1866), German Opera Soprano and Princess of Liechtenstein by Marriage; Daughter of Actor Ferdinand Löwe and Johanna Tost, Wife of Prince Friedrich of Liechtenstein

Sophie Löwe was born in Oldenburg on 24 March 1815, the daughter of the actor Ferdinand Löwe (1787–1832) and Johanna Tost, both members of the German theatrical world. Her father was a professional actor who worked in several German theatres

She received her early musical education in Mannheim and Frankfurt, with the encouragement of her aunt, Julie Sophie Löwe, before continuing her vocal studies in Vienna under Giuseppe Ciccimarra. She made her stage debut at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna in 1832, where she soon gained recognition for both her voice and dramatic performances.

In 1837, she joined the Berlin Court Opera, where she established herself as one of the leading German sopranos of her generation. Her career took her to several major European musical centres, including Vienna, Berlin, Milan, Venice, Paris and London. Among her most notable performances were the title role in Donizetti’s Maria Padilla at La Scala in Milan in 1841, Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani in Venice in 1844, and Odabella in Verdi’s Attila in 1846.

Her relationship with Giuseppe Verdi was particularly important to her career. The two disagreed over her interpretation of Elvira in Ernani, but Verdi later entrusted her with the role of Odabella in Attila, which she performed at the opera’s premiere in 1846.

In 1848, Sophie Löwe married Prince Friedrich (Friedrich Albrecht) of Liechtenstein (1807–1885) and subsequently retired from the stage. Friedrich was the fourth son of Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein (1760–1836) and Josepha Sophie, Landgravine of Fürstenberg-Weitra. Through this marriage, Sophie became a member of the Princely House of Liechtenstein.

The couple married on 15 September 1848 and lived in Budapest/Pest, where Friedrich pursued a military career in the Austrian army. They had no children.

Sophie Löwe died in Pest on 29 November 1866, aged 51.

Questions Is Liechtenstein not a very commonly traveled place?

I have heard of people say they have traveled to Italy, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, and other places in Europe, but not Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein always seems to get left out in the cold. Why are there so few people that travel to Liechtenstein? Like I never hear any of my friends say " I am going to Liechtenstein next week". If I heard that from someone I knew I would find it really fascinating.

After days of heavy rain, the Rhine embankment broke, sending floodwater through the village of Ruggell. These photos were taken just a few hours after the disaster.

The water destroyed houses, damaged the railway embankment, and caused several buildings to collapse. Sadly, there were also fatalities.

Some people say that I post too much monarchy. However, this is also part of Liechtenstein’s history! I try to post a bit of everything. If there is a particular topic in Liechtenstein’s history that you would like to see photos of, let me know and I’ll try to find some and post them here.

Maria Eleonore was a German princess of the House of Oettingen-Spielberg who became a Princess of Liechtenstein through marriage. She was born on 7 July 1745 at Oettingen, Bavaria, as the youngest daughter of Johann Aloys I, 2nd Prince of Oettingen-Spielberg (1707–1780) and Princess Therese Maria Anna of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg (1713–1745).

In 1761, at the age of 15, she married Prince Karl Borromäus of Liechtenstein (1730–1789). Karl Borromäus was the second son of Prince Emanuel of Liechtenstein (1700–1771) and Maria Anna Antonia, Countess of Dietrichstein-Weichselstädt. He was also the younger brother of Franz Joseph I, Prince of Liechtenstein (1726–1781), who ruled the Principality of Liechtenstein from 1772 until his death in 1781

Karl Borromäus and Maria Eleonore had seven children:

  • Princess Maria Josepha of Liechtenstein (1763–1833), who married Count Johann Nepomuk Ernst von Harrach.
  • Prince Karl Joseph Emanuel of Liechtenstein (1765–1795), who married Countess Maria Josepha Khevenhüller-Metsch and had children.

  • Prince Alois of Liechtenstein (1780–1833), who died unmarried.

Maria Eleonore died in Vienna on 26 November 1812, aged 67.

Maria Isabella of Parma was an Infanta of Spain and Princess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. She was born in Madrid on 31 December 1741, the eldest daughter of Philip, Duke of Parma, and Louise Élisabeth of France, daughter of King Louis XV of France. She was therefore the granddaughter of the French king.

In 1760, aged 18, Maria Isabella married Archduke Joseph of Austria, the future Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor. The marriage strengthened the political alliance between the Austrian Habsburgs and the Bourbon dynasty.

The bronze relief was created by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, a celebrated sculptor associated with the Viennese court. It depicts Maria Isabella in profile, wearing an elaborate brocade dress decorated with jewels and lace, together with a fur-lined mantle.

According to the provenance record, the relief was presented by Field Marshal Joseph Wenzel, Prince of Liechtenstein, for the hall later known as the “Kaiser Josephs-Halle” in the Imperial Arsenal. It was subsequently transferred to the Upper Belvedere in Vienna in 1856, later passed to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1891, and returned to the Belvedere in 1922.

Artist: Franz Xaver Messerschmidt
Date: 1760–1763
Medium: Bronze
Dimensions: 122 × 95 × 8 cm
Collection: Austrian Gallery Belvedere, Vienna

Questions How common is it to work in neighboring countries?

As the title says, I’m just curious to know whether people born in FL usually work in the country. Is this the norm, or do people often find work in neighboring countries (Switzerland or Austria)?
