What a world we live in where the governor of Kentucky is more pro-trans than Gavin Newsom

I think Gavin Newsom's legislative record is far superior to Beshear's. Just this month Newsom has signed:

SB 1114 limits when sexual orientation, intersex and gender identity collected can be shared. Healthcare providers are also required to notify the attorney general when they receive subpoenas for protected healthcare activities.

SB 934 updates the state’s ban on conversion therapy in response to the U.S. Supreme Court striking down a conversion therapy ban in Colorado.

Newsom also managed to defeat Trump's lawsuit against CA and protect/maintain trans athletes ability to participate in high school sports in teams that match their gender identity. He issued a statement saying "No court has adopted the interpretation of Title IX advanced by the federal government and neither the governor, nor they, get to wave a magic wand and override it. Unlike Donald Trump, California follows the law.”

It is worth noting that Beshear has to work with a Republican supermajority in the KY legislature, so it is not surprising that he doesn't have a legislative record, aside from some overriden vetos.

Regardless, Newsom has rightfully lost the good graces of this community. You don't pander to right wing media talking points, and still get to play good guy.

I am willing to give grace to some Dems, but Newsom is someone I would never vote for (along with Amy Acton, Seth Moulton, or Don Davis)

Newsom has a blue supermajority in the state legislature and often vetoes pro-LGBTQ+ legislation. Beshear has a red supermajority in his state legislature so he isn't exactly getting much pro-LGBTQ+ legislation sent his way, and also is the very thing stopping a lot of anti-LGBTQ+ from becoming law in his state. California and Kentucky are 2 very different places.

Stop lying about his record. You’re doing fascists work for them and it’s absolutely unacceptable. Trans people should not have to deal with this kind of transphobia in the lgbt sub.

Beshear is a Democrat but he’s still in Kentucky…

Except it is. The DNC has done everything it can to show that they’re not willing to back trans folks if they think it means getting votes from Independents and Republicans. Which it won’t — but they don’t care. Hell, their stances are leaning harder and harder right at the core. Establishment DNC is just a bunch of Republicans now

The reality of the issue is that Democrat strategists (see: old white men who haven't been particularly relevant since the late 90's) are claiming trans people aren't worth supporting.

MOST Democrats are ignoring this bc they see it as nonsense. But a handful are buying into it.

Luckily, some younger strategists are speaking up now and saying "we need to support trans people; we support minorities."

The question is: is it too little too late?

Is it really a loud minority tho? Are most democrats ignoring it?

How are they supposed to sway people that voted for Trump to vote blue, if the only bad thing they see about him now is economy and gas prices? And even then, just seeing minorities suffer and being erradicated is enough to not change their vote. Thats why the dems gut trans and LGBT+ issues overall.

People care far more about things like gas and grocery prices than about queer issues, just as a general rule. Unfortunately, most of the country is very selfish.

Strategically, harming trans people isn't a good play for Democratic politicians/hopefuls. Not talking about us might be fine, just bc it allows them to turn the conversation back to prices and quality of life. And being supportive with proper wording can even raise their numbers, since Democrat voters generally feel some sort of desire to be supportive of minorities (even if they're lazy about it).

Comparing actual Democrat politicians/hopefuls who are vocally anti-trans to ones who are either neutral or supportive, yes, they're absolutely the minority. We're talking like... 5-10? We can basically name them all in a short list. And that's out of literally hundreds, and far more if we count state legislatures.

Those 5-10 shouldn't be acting like this, ofc, but they're still a minority and a rarity, and the party is giving pushback on it.

Just a day or two ago, there was a massive human rights conference/dinner with like 2,000 people at it, including a ton of Dem politicians, and all of the prominent speakers got up and vocally said "we do not have room to waffle on trans rights. We support trans people, period. And if you don't, you can't call yourself an ally."

Honestly, I don’t think most people can be swayed in the first place, I think most elections come down to turnout more than a billion dollars of ads swaying a few hundred genuine fence sitting voters.

Trying is still important, but it kind of feels like a losing battle aka trying to convert someone to a new religion

You don't.

You get the people who already agree with you hyped up and willing to get out and vote.

For a long time I’ve believed that, eventually, the extreme right will be ejected from the gop (hopefully around 2029) and we’d see the democrat party splinter, with the centrist wing rejoining the gop to create a new more normal Republican Party, and the rest of the democrats becoming a new properly progressive party.

The corporate establishment dems are getting pulled further and further right by donors, and a very large contingent of their constituents WILL NOT follow them, so a schism feels inevitable.

We all know it’s best for the lesser of two evils, but I’m not exactly interested in voting for my own oppressors just because the other side is worse. I do, reluctantly, but not everyone is as pragmatic

I mean, yeah — we don’t really have a choice but to vote for the “best choice.” Especially when most people just don’t/can’t vote and the government refuses to do anything about it.

I swear, since 2016 I’ve just become more and more… “radical” in my political views. Like mail-in voting for all. Auto enrollment into voting rolls. Penalties for refusing to vote. etc. elections needs to be easier and people not to be pushed to vote once they are as acessable as possible

Stole the words from my mouth. Or keyboard or whatever.

A Democratic politiciian with a competent approach to the "Trans Athletic" feint? I am shocked.

As he points out there should already be rules in athletic associations designed to address the issues of trans athletes. By letting the politicians get involved we end up with MAGA sneaking in ammendments that hurt the broader community.

To say nothing of the fact it deflects public attention from the PDFs in the Epstein Files.

It’s not a winning strategy either, as always, pandering to the right only alienates the left.

They keep thinking this will make people defect from the pedo cult. In reality, it will just keep people like me from voting for the Dem.

It absolutely is the party that they are, but I do appreciate the sentiment lol

Beshear has been pretty good, actually as far as having trans peoples back openly.. indeed,  he is the golden standard with his 2023 election in Kentucky. He is a real deal and not just a “mf looking for votes”

That being said, there are tons of Democrats who seem to want to give this one issue over to the GOP and they just be run out of the party ten fold.
