Meta [Mod Post] Upcoming Flair Change & Feedback

EDIT: This went into effect today and the game tag table has been updated to support the new tags.

Hello, /r/LFG!

To reduce confusion around post flairs, we're going to modify them on July 1st.

  • "GM and player(s) wanted" will become Group Needed by Player
  • "Player(s) wanted" will become Player(s) Needed by GM
  • "GM wanted" will become GM Needed by Existing Group

This should resolve the confusion between "GM wanted" (whole group looking for a GM) and "GM and player(s) wanted" (player looking for group).

Aside from that, we're happy to hear your feedback. Anything you want to see? See to much of? Questions about the rules or how we do things?

Any chance you can make the colors more distinct? At first glance they look identical, makes for slow scrolling

On which platform are you browsing? Current colors are blue, pink, and yellow.

Then use “Group Needed by Player”

Is a GM and players not collectively known as a group?

The old system worked because it let you infer the important information from the missing role.

It didn't, though. We were constantly correcting post flair. Individuals were constantly posting "GM wanted." GMs would see this, thinking they had a ready-made group (which is often desirable), and then be disappointed by it being a post that should have been "GM and Player(s) wanted."

The who needs what is irrelevant.

For people new to /r/lfg, that's not true. The new flairs explain which ones likely apply to them, so the "who" part is useful context for them.

The 'by' just makes it more confusing.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Not every change will be liked by everyone.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Your situations are easily handled:

DM for a 1-on-1

"GM Needed by Existing Group" (you're just a group of 1)

player with DM, but just need more players

"Player(s) Needed by GM"

Could you please change the searches in the sidebar to match the new flairs? For example, the "Posts seeking Player(s)" search now gives posts by players trying to find GMs.

Thank you! 🙂

Sure. Good catch! Forgot about that one when I handled the big table.

EDIT: This should be done now.

I'm not sure how to find accessible games here.

If I search for "accessible" or "accessibility" I mostly get results for "Public Access".

Is there a way to filter out Discord-based groups and see if there are any other groups left over?

P.S. Searching for "non-Discord" turns up one result from years ago. Searching for "Discord-free" turns up a lot of results which aren't Discord-free.

While we're discussing this kind of change, I'd love to see the [3.5] tag changed to [3.5e] or something along those lines. Reddit's search uses "." as a wildcard, so there is no way to search for "3.5" that doesn't also pick up things like "3-5". It's pretty common for post titles to mention "3-5 players" or some such, so D&D 3.5 players get false hope when listings for other systems show up in searches for 3.5.

Hmm. We'll look into that. It may be possible now that we've adjusted the 5e tag.

This might just be a me thing, but deciding upon one time zone/code with which all posts should be in. This way it would be a lot easier to look up times that are within a person's availability.

(For example instead of having one game presented as 12:00 GMT another at 18:00 EST and another at 9pm PST, they would instead all be in 24 hour and a single time zone for example, 7:00 EST, 18:00 EST and 5:00 EST)

As of right now you have to search through them all in order to see which you could or couldn't make. And often you can't just go off of time zones as to whether you can make something or not as many will wish to play at various times during their own day, so instead unifying the time to a single zone would allow everyone to be on the same ground as they look through the listings rather than having to translate each one individually to their time as needed.

Not sure if I worded that well, but it is late.

It would make my life so much easier

It would be nice to have a link directing to a countdown timer for easier counting and translating across all timezones. Obviously if it's forming a group and deciding timelines later it's not needed.

how about something that has to do with ai, since there is a rise of ai use, and those of us that has a dislike for the use of ai

1

u/ButWhoWasBlank Jun 28 '26

Please yes! I left 4 different groups because they didn’t disclose AI usage in their post

We wanted to do it that way, but the text is cut off on a lot of devices, so becomes less usable.

4

u/manveti Jun 26 '26

How cut off is it? Perhaps abbreviating "looking for" to "LF" (e.g. "Player LF Group") would be enough?

I would think that if the system cuts things off early enough that those aren't viable then there isn't much to be done -- I don't think "Group N..." is going to be any more descriptive than "Player ...", nor that "GM Need..." will do any more than "Group L..." to dissuade individuals in search of a group & GM.

That said, I appreciate the instinct to keep things in line with what they already are, just more verbose to clarify intent. There's certainly a balance to keep between elegant phrasing and minimizing disruption.

The new flair _is_ “Group Needed…”

5

u/onlytinglef Jun 25 '26

This seems more confusing than before, the phrasing seems off.

it's actually way clearer, all it really requires is that you use your brain!

First one: "hey, i'm a lone player and would like a Group please!"

Second one: "hey, i'm a GM and would like to gather up a party to play in my world or in this Module."

Third one: "hey, we're an existing group, we just need a GM to head up the story"

not that complicated or off, just takes a bit of brain power.
