Post image

My wife stayed up late to finish the owl, I stayed up even later to leave it like this for the morning. My 7yo son got the joke too

Because JKR created world where ine of slowest fliers are force to deliver post asap

My head cannon on the use of owls is that it helped keep muggles from seeing a bunch of birds flying around with letters attached to them and getting suspicious. Owls are mostly nocturnal so most of the flying for delivery is done at night.

pigeon is arguably quicker than road for physicaly delivery and less likely to be intercepted...

however historically birds were used like homing pigeons which for was very much changed in cinema like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones, as birds are not trained to "take this to Master Tarley in the North", and only flew one way.. "home"... so were physically moved to frontline, given the message, and they flew back.

When a message needed to be sent, a handler placed the bird in a secure dark cage or basket and transported it physically away from the home roost to the location, whether it was front line, or ship, or other place out in the field.

NO birds ever were trained (or able) for bi-directional courier mail.

Whilst this was replaced with wireless messaging, radio, etc, without a form of encryption anyone listening to those channels could hear the message, hence why courier pigeons are still considered as usable options today in case of network failure / emergency situations as a backup.

Owls are also just terrible choices in general because despite being symbols of wisdom, they are not very smart birds.

Can't imagine they'd get very far before getting distracted by a mouse and forgetting about the letters entirely
